When did you use George MacDonald as a read-aloud?

I am considering substituting MacDonald for Lang's Blue Fairy Book and some other literature selections for next year. Dd will be 6. For those of you who use MacDonald, is this too early? I have The Gifts of the Child Christ & Other Stories.

I read At the Back of the North Wind to my two when they were 6 and 9. My then 6yo (now 8) claims to have loved it and remembers it vividly. This is the only one of MacDonald's books I've read to them.

I can't remember the name of the story now (something about a princess and a string), but we read it last year when our kids were 10, 8, 6, and 3. The three year old wasn't really into it, but everyone else enjoyed it.

Was it The Light Princess? I read this to my dc 8 and 5 this year - they loved it but I thought the reading level was a little too difficult, and that they would have appreciated it more in another year or two.

My dd7 has been listening to many of the MacDonald stories read by my husband or downloaded from librivox.org. Her favorites are The Princess and the Goblin and the Princess and Curdie.

I'm thinking mine are probably ready for The Princess and the Goblin books. But we have lots of piles of books sitting around to read, so I don't know when we'll get to it. But I think they would like it.

I read The Lost Princess and The Princess and the Goblin to my daughters when they were about 10, 8, and 6. They loved both books.
