Guest murrmaid
My 14 yo son has shown a great interest in architecture. He is constantly sketching awesome, outlandish modern buildings and sculptures in his little notebook that never leaves his side. His newest heroes are I.M. Pei,Frank Lloyd Wright, etc... Anyone know of great curriculum that will foster this interest? Should I get him into an auto-cad class? Also, any quality recommendations for perspective drawing curriculum? Thanks!!! kiwi mum
Sorry, I have no ideas, but bumping this as my son would be interested in these type of things also.
Guest Marissa
Hi, Have you tried google sketch-up; It is free, you down load it onto your computer and it lets you draw plans and things. My 12 yo son likes it. My son also has a pad thing that he just got that he can "draw" on and it comes out onto the computer. We bought it for about 80 dollars. I was thinking of getting geometer sketchpad for him as well. This is really for helping to teach geometry, but it looked like something he might enjoy. They have demos on youtube of this. nmoira
There are some good resources in this thread and this. See if your library has: 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School and maybe Freehand Sketching: An Introduction. My bias is to learn to draw reasonably well before moving on to CAD. You may wish to ask on the high school board as well.

I had absolutely no background in drawing so they were extremely helpful in staying on track with my peers. I still use them for those brief moments when I just want to sketch to clear my mind. I also agree with the nmoira about drawing before moving into CAD. CAD made more sense to me after I learned about drawing, sketching, and learning to read line weights and why they are drawn the way they are drawn. Stacy in NJ
aspiring one, I don't think I'd look for any specific curriculum that focuses on it. Think about drawing, math (measurement & geometry), spacial design (games that involve building, dimension, 3D), computer programing, and the history of architecture. here are a few things to work with: http://www.amazon.com/Foxmind-Games-310086-Architecto/dp/B000PHQLME/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287075857&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Castles-Cut-Out-Put-Together/dp/0883880881/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1287075970&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/History-Channel-Presents-Rome-Engineering/dp/B000S0GYNE http://activitiesforlearning.com/drawingset.aspx http://store.calvertschool.org/pc-127-23-a-childs-history-of-art-architecture-course.aspx
Guest murrmaid
Thank you all! I think it is wise advice to focus on math, geometry, drawing, etc... before moving on to specific architecture software. We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. These are also wonderful links, games and book recommendations! We'll put them to good use.
nmoira
If he hasn't been there already, there are some fantastic architecture related TED Talks.
