Recommended Christian Books on Education

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to expand my general understanding on how to educate my two dd from a Christian perspective. I've just ordered Cathy Duffy's "100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum", and since the AU$ is nearly on par with the US$ I'll like to get some more stuff on Amazon.com.

Any recommendations?

For the Christian perspective on classical ed, you might read the Bluedorn book, Teaching the Trivium.

Something I like to do is listen to convention speakers. You can order them from most conventions at sites like Rhino Technologies and Best Christian Conferences. (Not Amazon, but some are available for download.) Over the last 8-9 years, I think I've listened to every major homeschool author, and I feel I get a little something from each one. My favorites on Christian homeschooling are by David Hazell of My Father's World, but then I'm biased having used their curriculum for many years :)

~ Educating the Wholehearted Child by Clay Clarkson (I'm currently doing "chapter by chapter" summaries/highlights of this one on my blog)

NOTE: a revised edition of this one is due out before year's end - I'd wait for the new edition.

~ For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay

~ Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit by Teri Maxwell (great one for Moms!)

I also, like the practicality of Ruth Beechick's books.

Well, those are some of my favorites :) I have a little bit longer list on my blog here http://seasonsoflearning.blogspot.com/p/homeschool-parenting-book-favorites.html

I love this article by John Piper for a Christian perspective on education. http://desiringgod.org/resource-library/taste-see-articles/a-compelling-reason-for-rigorous-training-of-the-mind

It's a very short article but has shaped my motivations for and approach to homeschooling more than anything else I've read.

Here's a sampling: "Education of the mind in the rigorous discipline of thoughtful reading is a primary goal of school. The church of Jesus is debilitated when people are lulled into thinking that it is humble or democratic or relevant to give a merely practical education that does not involve the rigorous training of the mind to think hard and to construe meaning from difficult texts.

The issue of earning a living is not nearly so important as whether the next generation has direct access to the meaning of the Word of God."
