a good Italian foreign language study?

Recommended Posts

Whatever you decide, DO NOT use Rosetta Stone.

I usually recommend Progetto italiano for teens, schools outside of Italy that teach Italian as a foreign language on a high school level often use those, as well as foreign language courses. There are three books with workbooks, the entire grammar is covered in first two books and the third book is all about mini-units with texts, a lot of vocabulary practice, etc. It's pretty good, there's audio as well, but the downside is that it's all in Italian and assumes either a teacher, either the ability to go through it on your own (helped by dictionaries, etc.).

Alternatively, Universitalia is good too and these are often used as well.

Get a good bilingual dictionary, and a solid grammar, and you're good to start. Later, replace bilingual dictionary and grammar in English with a monolingual Zingarelli and Dardano/Trifone grammar and you're good to start the intermediate stage.

Just for heaven's sake, stay away from Rosetta Stone, "Learn Italian in X days" and similar stuff. You'll waste a lot of money and learn nothing.
