  1. Thank you for all of these replies!! I could not be more encouraged right now!! :):)
  2. Thanks for that!! I have signed up my older for several online classes and that was what I was thinking for my 9th grader. He is reluctant to do online classes, but maybe if he does one or two he'll get the hang of it. That is definitely encouraging. Thanks!
  3. I need to get one for my son! He is severely allergic to peanuts. Now that he is older and doing more without me by his side, I believe he should wear one. They have some really cool ones if you search around. How scary. I hope your daughter is ok.
  4. I know what you mean. I have many reasons for agreeing with you, but I'll refrain. :)
  5. She's great! I saw her at a conference a few years back. Enjoy!
  6. I agree with staying uninvolved! If they aren't friends, it's not your problem. If their values and beliefs are different, so be it. Just be a friend to each of them and don't allow yourself to talk about the other person with either of them. Eventually things will settle and if they don't remain friends, it's not a big deal. I have a friend who has some friends who have nothing in common with me. She is still my friend and doesn't expect me to be friends with all of her friends; that would be unreasonable, wouldn't it? Just don't make it a big deal and don't fall into the gossip trap!!
  7. I was looking at Veritas for an English class. My older son is going to take several online classes, one with Veritas. Can you tell me how the Veritas English classes are? I was considering signing my 9th grader for a Veritas English comp. class. What is your experience with Veritas? Thanks!
  8. I have to go back to work full time. My son is entering 9th grade this coming year and I am trying to figure out the new schedule. He works very well independently during the day and we work together in the late afternoons/evenings. I am open to any suggestions from any of you who manage to homeschool and work full time. This is new to me and a big challenge, but I believe we can do it, since my son is driven. He will be doing Saxon Algebra 1 and Henle Latin. We enjoyed The Magic Lens last year and want to do the next level this year, but I want him to do a lot more writing. I am looking for suggestions for science, history and English that he can do on his own during the day with my guidance in the evenings. I thought about using K12 for 9th grade science. I am open to all ideas. But please don't tell me that I can't do it! I have to make this work! Thanks!
  9. Thanks, Julie. She has always been sweet and loving, but not wanting to sleep alone is a new thing. Yes, it is sad.
  10. I was reading something else today about Shepherds hiding their pain. If that is true, then she is in a lot of pain on many days. I have been told to think of "quality of life". She has always been a very sweet and loyal dog. For the past several years, in spite of her arthritis, she still had that spark in her personality. The last two weeks have been different and I've noticed her fading a bit. It used to be that she would happily come in to the house, but lately she acts like she doesn't even care that I'm calling her. She's becoming more distant. I have never had to make a decision about euthanasia before and dread the possibility. Thanks for your replies. A new vet is definitely in order.
  11. Thank you for your response. I have been considering going to another vet, so that is what I'll do.
  12. I have a female German Shepherd who is 12 years old. She has very bad hips. This year I have taken her to the vet many times for a skin condition and ear infection. She was doing ok until just a few weeks ago. She seems to be declining. Normally she doesn't do much. She lies on her bed and gets up to eat, drink water, or go to the bathroom. Sometimes she will walk around the yard. But now she really only wants to just lie down and she is not very interested in eating. The other night after her walk she was so sore that she couldn't get up. I had to bring her a bowl of water because she couldn't get up. After awhile she was able to get up again, but I can tell her hind legs hurt and she can barely move them. For the past few days she doesn't want to sleep alone and my son has been sleeping on the couch so she isn't alone. She also went outside and barked for no apparent reason. It wasn't the bark she does when she is barking at something. A few nights she seemed to want to sleep outside, and that is something she never wanted to do. I had to coax her inside to her bed. I've taken her to the vet a lot this year and the vet didn't seem concerned about her lack of mobility. I tried to explain that she has a lot of trouble climbing into the car to go to the vet and she has trouble getting up without being in pain. The vet prescribed pain medicine for the days when it is especially hard for her to get up. What do you think? Are these symptoms that she might be approaching her end of days? I've been trying to just keep her comfortable and happy, but I feel sad for her right now. I'm not sure what I can do. The vet has been telling me that she looks good and probably has a few years left, but I always wonder about that, seeing her every day.
  13. Thanks! That is a good plan, then. Can you recommend a good geometry book?
  14. Geometry concurrently with Algebra I? My 10th grader is in the middle of Algebra. We are taking our time as he has always been one who needs a little extra time to master material. He wants to learn geometry. Is this something we can do concurrently with Algebra? I am thinking of adding it as a separate subject. He is doing just fine with Algebra I, going at his own pace and working independently. We are using Introductory Algebra by Lial and really like it. Is there a recommended Geometry book that is similar in quality? I appreciate your advice and suggestions. Susan
  15. We have a business in town with a sign that says, "Locally World Famous!" How does this work exactly? Others: I had a history teacher who would say "nuKUler" instead of nuCLEAR. "We need to get orientated with the procedure." "Pronunciate your words correctly." "I need to loose some weight." Also, use object pronouns for prepositional and direct objects! (use ME, not I) I love this thread!
  16. My husband was told by a Sheriff that the public restroom is a dangerous place. The Sheriff said to not ever let your child go into a public restroom alone, because he has seen too many cases of children being hurt.
  17. Very scary. I too have a peanut allergic child. I've had more angry and snide responses from other homeschool parents who don't like that my child couldn't be around peanuts. They just do.not.believe that exposure to peanuts can be DEADLY. I've been in the ER a few too many times because of peanut exposure (not even ingestion) and even when I tried to explain this, some moms have made it seem like I was dramatizing. My sincerest feelings of sympathy go to the poor family who lost their child. So very sad!!!
  18. My concerns have always had less to do with the ability of my children and more to do with the creeps that are out there in the world. I had 2 close calls with strangers. While it may be a small percentage the worst DOES happen. I think to answer the OP's question, I think you have to assess the environment that you are putting your child into. Is it safe? That is the real question. Generally, these days, I don't think it's safe. The kids can handle the responsibility, but there are just too many creepy people. I know many people consider me overprotective, but I do what I think is best. My boys are teens now and do just fine. They are responsible, handle their own transactions, and are becoming self sufficient. Susan
  19. I agree with all of the comments about practice. I'm not in a hurry for my son to drive alone, but I do want him to get plenty of practice. I believe that the more practice he has, the better driver he will become. He won't drive alone until we believe he is ready. We live in a small town, so he will get a lot of practice here before going out into the "real world". I know what you mean, OP. I get so many people asking why my son isn't driving yet! He is 15.5 yrs old. He will drive soon enough, when we're ready and when he is ready. He is starting drivers ed this year. I am giving him the option to take his time with the online portion, spreading out over a year if he needs to. He gets pressure from his acquaintences, but he also tells me that he isn't in a hurry to drive, that he wants to get a lot of practice so he can build his confidence. I think his thinking is correct. As far as I'm concerned, there is no rush to get him alone on the road with all the crazy drivers out there! To be honest, I am terrified to have him drive in Los Angeles, and I am guessing he will end up living somewhere there because of the field he wants to go into. I keep telling myself that I did just fine living there, so he will too. It's much different being on the parent side, though. All I can do is pray. Susan
  20. Hello, I have a 10th grader and 8th grader. My 10th grader has always been a "struggling" learner, but he is coming along. What is the best way to study for the SAT without letting the other subjects slide? I'll do some more searching, but I wanted to put the question out for people to respond. I expect my 10th grader to attend community college before university, to ease him into it. I am not sure yet about my youngest. Thanks! Susan
  21. Yes, I remember having to sign for immunizations with our previous physicians. They had physicals this year and that is when the doctor just immunized them, with no warning whatsoever. I really bothered me and when I asked about it, he was defensive and basically gave me a quick answer that there are no risks whatsoever. That is never the case, but for some reason he clearly is on some kind of mission. I had decided to change pediatricians after that experience. Where can I find information about the requirement for physicians to get my authorization for each immunization? I would like to follow up on this.
  22. My pediatrician gave it to my sons without telling me. He did not want me to argue about it or question it. My kids are fully immunized, but after he gave that shot to them, I was concerned because I don't know anything about it. I was remembering when the Rotovirus vaccine came out, many children suffered from intestinal blockages. This makes me wonder about the possible risks with this one. Some girls are believed to have gotten ALS as a result of this vaccine??? How scary!! I don't like the way my doctor is pushing this vaccine without even giving me a chance to question it or understand it. They have nagged me about coming back in for their second and third dose, but I do not plan to do so.
