battlemaiden
My son has taken a fancy. He's not quite ready to be introduced to Lord Peter Wimsey ;), my favorite, and the only, mystery series I read. What are the best, well written, starter mystery books? Thanks so much. Jo
Jean in Newcastle
Hardy boys might be too young for him but my 10 year old still reads them. Sherlock Holmes is good. My ds10 loves the "Cat Who" series by Lillian Jackson Braun. They are written for adults but have absolutely no smut.
EarleneW
My 10 year old loves the Hardy Boys books as well.
JFSinIL
I was about 11ish when I started reading them. They are great books for boys and girls - and you can be sure there is no smut, etc.
In The Great White North
now I don't see it. Anyway, Hardy Boys/Nancy Drews have been "updated for each generation," which means the older ones are "better" than the newer ones. They are longer, have a higher reaing level, larger vocabulary and don't call people "Dude." Anything paperback or with a shiny yellow/blue cover ARE for 9 - 10 year olds. The older ones (dark blue/brown cover without a picture on it) were written for older (12-13) year olds and are a reasonably fun (if short) read for ME! If your 11-12 year old dc hasn't read them I recommend the old ones. Our progressions of mystery books went: Magic Tree House (10) Encyclopedia Brown (10) Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys(10-11) Famous Five series by Enid Blyton (10-11) (Great series but hard to find. The library had some but I've never seen them in a "new" bookstore, only second hand.) Sherlock Holmes (around 11/12) And I just gave ds (16) Father Brown Any ideas for in between Sherlock Holmes and Father Brown wuold be appreciated.:001_smile:
