mom2koh
All of the reading list requests has me wondering what are the must read books for a 2nd grader? Any help would be appreciated. DD will begin 2nd grade work this summer and has developed a love of reading. Please let me know what we should not miss out on this year! Thanks! Alphabetika
Do you mean books she can read herself, or books you read to her? Because I think 2nd grade is a great time for Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace. :) You may need to read it to her, but you'll love it if you do. Dawn E
We've had great success with the Sonlight 2nd grade readers. If you don't already receive it, request a catalog from them just to see all the great book ideas. The biggest hits: Betsy-Tacy series "B" is for Betsy series by Haywood Encyclopedia Brown Virtually ANYTHING by Clyde Bulla
MaMa2005
Get her started on the Magic Tree House series. She will fall in love with Jack and Annie.
Love My Life x4
I have just finished putting together Alexis' reading list for 2nd grade. Of course, this list will more than likely change throughout the year... but it's a start :001_smile: And she may not get to all of the books this year... but I think some could move on to her 3rd grade list if needed. Her love for reading is really taking off though and she is finishing a chapter book every couple days right now! ** This list does not include history, science, geography, etc... books that she (we) will be reading this year. {I am planning on putting together little 'units' to go with these books... a small reading journal, vocabulary words, comprehension questions, additional activities, etc...} A Little Princess Absolutely Lucy Aesop's Fables {I meant to do this in 1st... but I forgot :tongue_smilie:} Anne of Green Gables Black Beauty Charlotte's Web Caddie Woodlawn Ellen Tebbits The Family Under the Bridge The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses Hannah The Hundred Dresses In Grandma's Attic Lilly and Miss Liberty Little House in the Big Woods Little Pilgrims Progress Mailing May Mary Poppins Mr. Poppers Penguins Mrs. Piggle Wiggle Muggie Maggie Pioneer Cat Pippi Longstocking Pollyanna Sarah Plain and Tall Shiloh Snowflake Bentley Socks Stuart Little Summer Pony The Trumpet of the Swan The Velveteen Rabbit The Wheel on the School Winter Pony Additional Reading Books Amber Brown Animal Ark Series Animal Friends Series {Janette Oak} The Boxcar Children Cam Jansen Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa Cul-de-sac Kids Katie Kazoo Keeker The Littles Precious Girls Club Pony Crazed Princess The Tiara Club
In the Rain
My 2nd grade dd likes reading all of the books Dawn listed. They would have been top on my list. ;) She also likes: biographies (especially Childhood of Famous Americans series) Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series Half Magic series Boxcar Children series American Girl series (especially the nonfiction books- Welcome to ... World) Little House on the Prairie series picture books of fairy tales Do you sense a theme? She loves series! Her first question after reading a new book is, "Are there more?" :tongue_smilie: For read alouds, she enjoyed stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder, E. Nesbit and George McDonald. It seems like there are a ton of good books for this age.
pereztribe
What I did was with my dd 2nd grader was I went to www.ala.org. There they have the list of ALL the Newberry and Caldecott award winning books. Caldecott's are picture books and Newberry's are chapter books. We live in Texas, so we have the Texas Bluebonnet Award books and every year there is a master list the public school teachers go by...so, I also printed out those lists. You may want to preview them because many are secular, but they also teach great moral character. I hope this helps. Kristy

Kidlit
I have a book blog for which I mainly write about what my children and I read together. My girls are younger than yours, but many of our read-alouds would be appropriate for a second grader, too. Here's a link (the one in my signature needs to be updated)---> Hope Is the Word
