It can work. Can you still get in on an Open House? You can pm me if you need some help finding one... or info. I'm not sure how your son responds to noise... activity level... etc. Really, in our community and my State Director's too, I've been pleasantly surprised at how kind students are to one another! He has stated before he was almost diagnosed with classical autism when he was a kid, but his parents didn't want to put him in an institution so they didn't go forward with the diagnosis...
