Jane in NC
Apparently a number of large public universities are creating smaller liberal arts "honors" colleges allowing students to have the best of both worlds, smaller classes and the big stadium sports experience. The Chronicle of Higher Ed makes note of the trend here.
swimmermom3
Jane, thank you for this information. I will be perusing the additional links in the article this evening as it is a topic of considerable interest here.
Yolanda in Mass
Hmmm, yes, very interesting. Our state univ has an honors college, but it's not entirely clear how much of a stand alone school it is. Yes, there's separate housing and some honors seminars, but I need to look more closely and get all the details.
Denise in Florida
Thanks for the link, I wasn't able to read more than the introduction since I don't have a subscription. I just wanted to throw in some personal experience. My oldest dd attends the honors college of the Florida public university system. New College of Florida is an extremely tough honors college with about 750 student total. They do not have GPAs or credit hours (if they need to transfer a 'satisfactory' is automatically considered an 'A'). They are a stand alone campus but share a bookstore and library with the University of South Florida. The school is listed in "Colleges That Change Lives" by Lauren Pope. They do not have a sports team but they don't seem to miss it. This school is not a good fit for everyone but my daughter loves it.

Interesting...it was an open article when I posted this. Thanks for your input on New College. I've heard great things about the school.
