HSDCY
I don't know if this has been posted, but I got these free DVDs from http://www.stosselintheclassroom.org. They are designed to encourage discussions in the classroom, but we find it very suitable for home use. I showed ds the 2010 edition DVD, he watched it all the way through, and we had many wonderful discussions on those topics for a few days afterward. These are intended for grade 7-12, but if you have a news junkie like my 10yo, 4-5th grade is fine. Subject areas cover: social studies, current events, civics/govt. political science, economics, and journalism. Some topics covered in the DVDs are: Vote or Die Global Warming Debate Campaign Finance Ethanol Fuel Debt and Responsibility Federal Spending Healthcare and Profit Stereotypes Foreign Aid etc.
