imeverywoman
My vanilla has been resting since Oct. 2007 and still smells like alcohol. Any ideas as to why this is? I used Smirnoff and wonder if it has too much alcohol content? Sheesh!
Jenn in Mo
I'm no help at all - never made it. But we buy our vanilla in glass jars from Mexico and I can smell alcohol in ours. Can you smell vanilla with it?
Paintedlady
I don't think the alcohol smell goes completely away. Are you shaking it periodically? Keeping it in a dark place or at least out of sunlight? Did you use quality beans? Did you add enough beans? Did you cut them open? Is the liquid amber/brown in color? Just going through a checklist in my mind of things that could be wrong. I don't think the alcohol content matters. I've got several bottles of Smirnoff made vanilla sitting for about 3 months now and it definitely smells (and tastes) like vanilla. hth! imeverywoman
I did cut the beans open; it is stored in a cool, dark place, and I do shake it periodically. I guess I shouldn't worry about it and just go ahead and use it ! Thanks, ladies! :)
ConnieB
Mine always have an alcohol smell, and taste (DD wanted to know what just vanilla tasted like.....she didn't like it, but loves the flavor in things!). Of course, I've never had a liter last for two years!
