  1. I went through the same thing until I arrived at the fact that we learned to mastery level, and when I submitted the transcript to all the universities, I sent along documents explaining my philosophy of education, methods of instruction, etc.. There was no question from any of the universities about the transcripts or my methods. Go in peace and enjoy this wonderful milestone! Blessings, Lisa 🙂
  2. Yes! We did this with our son prior to him beginning his university studies and it was money well spent! Feel free to contact me for more info if you'd like. I highly recommend it, and in fact, I do recommend it to all of my students' parents. Kindly, Lisa :)
  3. I have recently been solicited to help two 8th grade students with their FLVS courses. I'm not a huge proponent of FLVS and am approaching this quite cautiously. I've sent a list of questions to the parents to see what their specific expectations are, both from the students, and me. Does anyone have experience with a similar situation?

  6. I have missed this group very much and read some threads when I am able. My last child recently graduated, and now, I am actively looking after my mother since the passing of my beloved father. Life has taken a new direction, but I remember the hive with deep fondness and much thankfulness for all that you have taught me. I have some news that I want to share here, knowing that because you shared this journey with me, you can appreciate it, My son, who is now 22, was impossible to motivate as a writer during our homeschooling journey. There were many struggles and much frustration, both on his part, and mine, during those years. He. Would. Not. Write. After graduation and a gap year, he went on to a top private university, and during his first semester, wrote in excess of 50 papers. (Yes, God is real, and has a GREAT sense of humor!!! ) A few weeks into his second semester, he decided to declare his major: a double major in English and History, with a double minor in Economics and Political Science. I thought it was a joke. He returned home for the summer and worked retail in the evenings. One afternoon a week, for four weeks, he tutored a struggling college student with her summer term paper. Last week she submitted the paper, and I won't lie to you; I've been very concerned that she may be unhappy if her grade doesn't match her expectation (READ: the money she paid for instruction). My son just telephoned me and told me that her grade has come back. She scored a perfect 100. I am so very proud of this incredible young woman and the time and energy she invested to earn her perfect score. It also humbles my soul to see that the seeds that were planted in my son, eventually matured into fruit. Now, he's planting his own seeds and using his talent to help others reach their potential. I share this with you to encourage you. Don't despair. Your child is listening. Your child IS learning. And believe it or not, your child is paying attention, but he is growing at his own pace. You may not see the results immediately, but be patient. Fruit which ripens on the tree is always sweeter than fruit which is plucked too soon. Just keep swimming!
  7. FWIW, my kids have done extremely well with the upgraded version. The upgraded features do not seem to have caused any problems with laziness or lack of retention, but instead, have kept them involved and interested. I know that many don't consider TT a rigorous course, but for my "non-mathy" students, it's been great, and has given great results on SAT. Happy day!
  8. Thank you so much for this reminder. Frankly, I'm a bit annoyed with the job they do of keeping their customers informed. I missed out on the geometry upgrade a while back and had to buy the 2.0 at full freight.
  9. Wow!!!! Congratulations to you! What an accomplishment! What's next for you?
  10. What a great improvement! How did you prepare? I'm curious because for one of my kids, we paid a ridiculous amount of $$$, and we couldn't budge his score from a 26, and in fact, his score actually dropped after the prep course. After all that work, he was so very disappointed! Great job! :)
  11. Good morning, all! I just came in to update my list of acceptances, as well as to participate in the thread of acceptances by name. I haven't been able to participate on this board like I did years ago, as I'm looking after my ailing elderly parents, as well as dealing with the many changes life has brought, such as a husband who had to move to NYC in order to keep his job, etc. (He's now back :) ) Nevertheless, I pop in and out, and today, when I looked at this board, something came over me. I broke into tears thinking of how far we have all come, how much we have all invested, how much help, love, support, encouragement has come from this community, and it moved my spirit deeply. Thank you. Thank you all for your wisdom, your strength, your insight, your honesty, your kindness, and even your brutal honesty, when it was much needed. I am thankful for you all, for your companionship along this difficult journey, and for your selflessness all along the way. You have not only given to your families, but to this community, as well, and without you, this would have been painfully lonely, and no where near as rich an experience. May you all be blessed! imeverywoman

  13. We did it!!!!! Ds was admitted to Villanova!!!!! Doing the happiest happy dance EVER!!!!!
  14. Forgive me, if this is a duplicate post. My computer is misbehaving. :) So far, we've been accepted to: Morehouse College (GA) monies pending Nova Southeastern University (FL) - Dean's Scholarship Florida International University Stetson University (FL) Dean's Scholarship Hofstra University (NY) Dean's Scholarship Villanova We're still waiting on: UCONN St. John's
  15. You have received some great advice. Now, I offer a hug of encouragement! :)
  16. Have you looked at Sonight's 20th Century World History? It's something I'm considering for the winter term for my ds. FWIW
  17. For Pete's Sake!!! I just typed out the longest response, and poof! It's gone. Anyway, I agree with you, Regentrude. and I wish my dh was on the same page. He believes it to be unfair to allow our kids extra time to get the work since the kids in school have to earn the grades they do with a limitation of time. Nevertheless, he gives me full autonomy to make the decisions. I agree with everything you've said, and probably just needed the thumbs up to do what I know needs to be done. Here I go to tighten my bootstraps... Parenting is some kind of job, isn't it?? Thanks for listening.
  18. This is correct. My dd has several ps friends who bomb classes in school and re-take them through FLVS.
  19. Yes. He would really enjoy anatomy. I have to admit that I'm probably trying to teach him a lesson that he cannot just do "whatever" and it be okay. I also don't want him to have that awful grade on his transcript. It will positively destroy his GPA. That is why I thought of having him redo the material on his own, taking the tests, and ultimately, take a standardized test to demonstrate that he has learned the material. Truthfully, anatomy would be more enjoyable for him, and probably much more beneficial. I just don't know what to do with that chemistry grade. :(
  20. I am not happy with my rising senior. He did a VERY poor job with a chemistry class he took online with apologia. He fell behind early in the class and wound up doing poorly as a result. He grew so discouraged and eventually stopped putting in much effort. I've thought about having him re-do the material on his own, but I just don't think I want to endure/micro-manage that. I'm strongly contemplating having him sign up again for the same course with the same instructor. The drawback to that is that it will be a "wasted" year in that he won't be accumulating another science credit. I guess what I'm asking is: 1) would you allow a do-over, and 2) am I making a bad decision, as he won't be getting to Physics or Anatomy, etc.?
  21. He is a rising senior. Thank you for the kind words and suggestions. I truly appreciate it!
  22. Thank you :). It looks like we'll have this looming over us until September.
  23. I agree. I'm all about following rules, but somewhere common sense has its place. Just not with the College Board, I suppose....
  24. What a lovely thought! That would be very redemptive, if indeed someone was spared as a result of my error. Thank you for that perspective! :)
