Melissa in St Louis
I'm thinking of taking advantage of apple season by making some apple butter and canning it for gift-giving season. I've never made apple-butter, never "canned" anything...is this doable? Not to be attempted by a beginner? I don't have a canner; I'd be doing it the "really old-fashioned" way. :001_smile: I thought it might be a nice idea to get these gifts made and DONE in November. Usually, I have to wait to do treat-ish gifts so they are fresh....this would be great if it would work! Here's the recipie I found... http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/All-Day-Apple-Butter-2/Detail.aspx :bigear:
Pippen
It's definitely do-able. My 11 yo and 15 yo made apple butter plus a bunch of other jams and jellies for their fair projects. I'd recommend starting with half the sugar and spices, then adjusting to taste once it's cooked for awhile. When I don't want to drag out my canner I just use my 8 quart soup pot and it works just fine.
Zoo Keeper
I just did this 2 weeks ago--apple butter in the crockpot is soooo easy and the whole house smells wonderful. I found a recipe and directions (with pictures, no less) on pickyourown.org . This is a great site with lots of info and recipes and detailed instructions on canning.
