Nan in Mass
You might like to read this: http://www.singaporemath.com/Mathematics_s/1.htm The book is expensive, but the description alone is useful. -Nan

naturalmom
I'm sure it doesn't go as deeply into the subject as this Singapore resource, but this website can help bridge the gap for kids between the models Singapore uses, adn actually using them on their own. http://www.mathplayground.com/thinkingblocks.htm The early levels have word problems with the blocks set up, but not labeled. They get to practice finding the information from the problem and typing to the block diagram. At the very end (after several levels) there are word problems that don't supply any of the help, so they can see how well they apply the concept independently. There are also math games on the site, some of which are really good.
