unsinkable
Unopened cocoa powder (the unsweetened kind) w/expiration 2/2009. Still good? Keep and use or toss and replace? Thanks!
Mom2GirlsTX
I would say use it, but that is me. I can remember the unsweetened box of cocoa powder at my house growing up and I'm sure it sat around a few years before it was replaced....lol I don't see how it would spoil in that short a time from Feb to Oct when it was not even opened. herbalgirl
Oh, definitely keep and use, especially if it isn't even open!
LaxMom
I suspect the expiration is because the natural oils could be "off" after a period of time. If it doesn't smell stale, I'd use it.
unsinkable
Thanks, ladies. I might have time to use it today. I'll let you know how it goes.

I have a recipe for Black & White Scones that is calling my name. I love baking/baked goods but I hate making them when I am trying to lose weight. But I am also sick of buying say, 1 muffin or 1 scone and paying nearly as much as I would pay to bake a batch.
unsinkable
I made the scones & they are yummy. The cocoa powder was fine! Black & White Chocolate Scones 2 c. flour 1/3 c. sugar 1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa 1 TBS baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 c. butter, cold 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 c to 3/4 c heavy cream 1/2 c semi-sweet chips 1/2 c milk choco. chips 1/2 c white chips (I use half&half, not heavy cream and all white chips.) Preheat over to 400 F. Mix dry ingredients. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg, vanilla & enough cream until just moistened. Stir in chips. Turn dough onto floured surface & kneed 10 times. Roll & pat into 8 inch circle. Cut into 12 wedges w/sharp knife. Transfer wedges onto ungreased baking sheet, 1 inch apart. Bake 12 -15 minutes or until set. DO NOT OVERBAKE. Let stand on sheet for 5 min. Transfer to wire rack to finish cooling. LMK if anyone tries them! elise1mds
Cocoa powder expires? ;) I go through enough baking supplies that I doubt anything ever expires, but that's interesting. I had no clue.
