I just recently figured out that "balanced literacy" means teaching kids to guess at words based on the picture, beginning and ending sound, what makes sense in the sentence, etc. Then token phonics lessons are added on, but phonics knowledge is not applied while the kids read, even if a tutor is right there to provide instruction and correction.
