What is the occasion? Maybe that would help narrow it down? In my world, if the jacket and pants don't match - i.e. a suit - then the bottom should be the darker. I think it really is a matter of personal preference, though, when you're talking about a sport coat situation. I mean, jeans and a sport coat look snazzy for some events, you know?
