Is the teacher's book necessary or can the student workbook be used alone?

The teacher's book just describes the big picture. If you've read WTM then you pretty much understand the philosophy. The workbook can easily be used alone.

I think you would need the teacher's book if you were going to teach a level for which a workbook isn't available yet. But other than that, you don't *need* it. I bought it and like it for the big picture, but now that I'm in the thick of things, I don't refer to it -- I just pick up the workbook each day and go.

I only read the hardback when I want to see what is coming before I have bought the next level. Other than that the workbooks totally stand alone.

 

If you want to play catch up with one of your older kids there is 6 weeks of work for all 4 levels in the Hardback, so it makes a nice abbreviated course for an older student.

I really enjoyed the text though, and may actually branch off into making up my own selections after we finish WW2. It is worth reading, if you have the $$ for it--
