Latin every year or take a break...

Hi Everyone,

Just after some input on our Latin dilemma...

Eldest ds has done:

3rd - Prima Latina

4th - LCI

5th - LCII

6th - LCII (currently here, will finish end of 2009)

We are taking 2yrs to finish LCII - partly because of me needing that extra time to figure it all out and partly because it's just not ds strongest subject...

I really would like him to do 2yrs of Latin in 9th and 10th - probably Henle.

What should I do with him in 7th and 8th - keep up the Latin somehow or take a break?

Has anyone had any experience with their dc learning a language, taking a break and then picking it up again at a later stage?

Instinct tells me to keep up his skills somehow, but with what I don't know. However, I know he would like a rest...

Any suggestions, inspiration or advice would be very welcome!!

Emily.

my dd hads the same sequence, except they did LCII in one year (they actually recommend two, which I didn't realize!).

we liked LC, but we were all rather sick of the general format.

my 6th grader wasn't all that jazzed about moving into Henle & having more of the same, so we are doing a year (at least) of Ecce Romani (which is more reading based, rather than grammar based). so far, she loves it! with LCII under her belt, she can make sense of the passages from the very first reading.

ER has lots of online support, both from Pearson and from various teacher websites, so that's a nice boost as well. we added french this year, so we are probably going to move through each at half speed.

my 4th grader is doing Matin Latin from book 1, which will be a LOT of review at first, but I mainly want to avoid losing ground this year. she's moving pretty fast through the first lessons, so she may move into book 2 (but if not, that's fine as well).

alternately, you could just have him review vocab, chants, and grammar rules, but you would really have to schedule it in and stay on top of it.

take a look at ER; it might be what your son needs to add a bit of interest to his Latin studies.

We worked on Latin for 4 years (middle of 3th grade through middle of 7th grade), the last year with a tutor. Ds had no real love or talent for it and it became a battle. We decided to drop it, but I gave ds several choices for what was going to replace it. He is now taking an online writing class (which he desperately needs) and is doing weight lifting with Dad (which will help him in basketball which he loves). He also took public speaking classes at co-op last semester (not what he would have volunteered for). So, although I wish we/he had stuck with Latin, I feel like dropping Latin has allowed us to work on other things that are beneficial.

Ds will have his choice of foreign language in high school. I hope the 4 years of Latin will help him then. We have realized benefits from the years we spent: grounding in grammar and above average vocabulary.

I don't know that I can offer any suggestions, inspiration, or advice. Only my experience so far. Part of me wishes that I had forced him to try an online Latin class. That was too awkward since our Latin studies didn't follow the typical school schedule (we used to school year round, but that eventually changed - Latin was the last subject not on the typical school schedule). I could have forced it this year, but ds will be taking online writing and history and I figure that's enough.

HTH!

Thanks for your responses - much appreciated.

I'll take a look at Ecce Romani, it sounds like a good idea.

I was almost ready to say to him if he didn't want to keep it up - that's OK. BUT then he says to me a while ago that he thought he was really getting the hang of it all. He now does Latin as his 2nd/3rd subject of the day instead of last...

Then he says he wants to learn Japanese too.

And French because his sister is...

I think I've realised we can't do everything - now I just have to teach him that. :willy_nilly:

Thanks again!!

Emily.
