Cricket
My kids recently started a lapbook on each region of the US. I thought it might be fun to have a dinner each time they complete a state based on foods of that state. Has anyone already done this work so I don't have to? :D
swimmermom3
You might try Eat Your Way Through the USA at Geomatters. I haven't used it but I have used several of their other products and have always been very satisfied.
~Kirsten~
I haven't seen it in person, but Eat Your Way Through the USA might be a great fit, or at the very least, a jumping off point if you don't get other suggestions. Sounds like a fun thing to do! :001_smile:
JenniferD
Ohh in one of my many state books I have recipes for each state. Let me go digging and see what I can come up with. Here is some of my bookmarks : http://homeschooling.about.com/od/kidscookingintheusa/Kids_Cooking_in_the_USA_Recipes_from_all_50_States.htm http://www.squidoo.com/50statesnotebook These 2 are my favorites :) http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/ubbs/archive/staterecipes.html http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodfaq4.html Edited June 8, 2009 by JenniferD
Cricket
Ooo, thanks! See, I knew I didn't have to reinvent the wheel! I think I've changed my mind though and since each lapbook is devoted to a region, we might just have one regional dinner instead of 50. For New England, I'm thinking clam chowder, brown bread, something with blueberries for dessert. I don't know. We have to eat every night and if we do 50 state dinners it might make menu planning easier! These resources will be helpful!
Dobela
Ooo, thanks! See, I knew I didn't have to reinvent the wheel! We have to eat every night and if we do 50 state dinners it might make menu planning easier! These resources will be helpful! I think doing it by region is a good idea. Unless the state has something it is well known for (like Louisiana's Cajun) most states share similar foods with other states in the region. The spices or cooking methoda may be a bit different but they are similar enough that you might not want to cook 15 versions of cornbread, for example. But, in case you want more ideas, I have the following bookmarked: http://www.mychefsfavorites.com/recipes/index.html http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/ubbs/archive/staterecipes.html http://www.foodtimeline.org/statefoods.html http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/pages/listthe50sju.html
Cricket
If anyone is interested, I started putting menus together and posted them on my blog. I think the menu planning is the funnest part. :001_smile: Some are for separate states and I combined some states.
Orthodox6
Here is a different approach. I checked to see how many states have an official "state food". A few do ! This webpage also includes other ideas: http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodfaq4.html
