momtolgd
DS will be in fourth grade in the fall, and our only spelling right now is explode the code. I want to add in formal spelling, but I'm not sure what to use. I already own Spelling Power. But I've read that the phonics rules in it don't help much. Still, I already own it and haven't ever used it...and feel like we should just use it since we have it. OTOH, DS likes ETC. Megawords is supposed to be similar....would that be a more natural transition for him? Not sure which way to go here. Any thoughts on these two spelling curriculums? We tried Spelling Workout and Sequential Spelling in 1/2 grades, but then I decided that we didn't need formal spelling until ETC was finished. For me, Spelling Workout was a lot of busywork. DS liked Sequential Spelling because of the tests. But at that time he wasn't remembering the spelling words to use them in other contexts. Thanks. :001_smile: Edited May 27, 2009 by momtolgd
dcjlkplus3
Since you already have it, I would try Spelling Power - he's a good age for it. Give it a month or so and see how it fits. You can always get megawords later.
LanaTron
I agree. Or, if Spelling Power doesn't click, you could try Spellwell by EPS (the same publisher as ETC).
