Karen in CO
I have a friend that was a doula and a LLL counselor and then a childbirth educator before she became a midwife. So I would think those are good places to ask for recommendations.
elw_miller
There is a professional organization for certified doulas: http://www.dona.org Both of my doulas (2 different states) were on this list and both were outstanding. Sometimes you can google doula and your area (city, state) and local doula organizations will come up. I think they are absolutely invaluable. Even though my husband could be there with me, the doula was his third arm--and boy did he need it! :)
joannqn
Ask midwives, breastfeeding women, women who've had homebirths, and try the dona website. I see that you are in the Pacific NW...if you are anywhere near Pierce County, WA, I can give you a few names.
