  1. Thanks for all the information! And for sharing your experiences! Helpful insight!
  2. Thanks to all of you for such great recommendations, etc. I have alot of researching and learning to do! But at least I have some starting points. Thanks again!
  3. My youngest, a 4th grader, is a newly diagnosed adhd, predominately inattentive, non-hyperactive. She is smart, has the ability to do the things set before her, but according to psychologist, it's there, she just loses focus very easily. We struggle with the abstract (for lack of a better word) subjects such as science and history. We have tried several different curriculums and approaches, but she just gets lost in the amount of material expected to be covered in one sitting or lesson. Does anyone have any experience, advice, recommendations on curriculums, approaches, etc? Even dietary changes that have worked/not worked? I have looked a bit at MFW wondering if that approach might work. I have also talked to a NILD therapist (a friend) but it may be too costly at this point.

  5. I have had thyroid disease for about 6 years now. I have overactive which is handled differently than over active. Yes, there is some connections with gluten-free (fortunately for me, it doesn't seem to be in my case) because they are both auto-immune. But, I would encourage you to get re-tested. When I first started having symptoms (no idea what it was though) my thyroid levels came back "normal" (1.35). I have sensed learned that 'my' normal is a smaller range than what is "recommended" medically. If my TSH was where yours was I would feel awful. My ideal is about 1.5-1.7. About 9 months after the original test, I was even more miserable. I was tested again and my TSH was .006. You should also know that thyroid levels can fluctuate some. I second the recommendations for anti-bodies, and T3. And find a good endocrinologist (or internist) who will listen to your symptoms. Good luck and hang in there. Hope you start feeling better soon.
  6. Not computer based, but my kids loved the BJU 6th grade science.
  7. Try Nest Learning. I usually google the website, but they will often have discounts on BJU materials.
  8. I don't know much about the curriculum you are using, but I have a philosophy that I go by when I am choosing what we do, extra curriculur and academic wise. If we do "such and such" and it will make me (the mom) insane, then we don't do it. I always chose sane mom. That is what my kids will remember. Not ballet classes at age 5 or 10, or gymnastics at age 7, etc. They will either look back and say we did alot and mom was nuts, or look back at a calm family life. Now, at this point for you, not having soccer any more is a big plus. I agree with who ever said to skip stuff that was review, not do every little thing. As hard as this may sound, I would encourage breaks. I may be tempting to keep working and not stop b/c you are behind. But that will create burn out quickly. I would look at your books and figure out which things are the most important subjects. Then look at those subjects and pick out the things in that which are most important in those. Does that make sense? What doesn't get done this year, will get addressed in review in upcoming years. And you will be calmer and better able to teach it. Hang in there!
  9. Like you, we used Abeka from the beginning, with my oldest two. Worked great for them and they loved it. We did hit a snag with the Abeka 6 math with my oldest. She needed more help in understanding the concepts as we got further into the book. So this year, for 7th, she is doing Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra. She is doing it with a class that meets once a week, but she is doing fine in it. We haven't needed the CD's yet, but I like knowing they are there if we need the extra help. Now, my middle child is doing Abeka 6 this year and he is doing much better. Of course, math is his thing, but he has hit some days with all the percents/fractions/decimals that have required some extra help from me. (They both have basically self-taught up until this point). I wish their was more explanantion and time spent in those areas. Since I have it, he will do the TT next year. I had heard a long time ago that at some point (either 6th or 7th) Abeka begins to lose some of its strengths. All of that said, I do believe that Abeka will give them a firm foundation in math, which apparantly it has so far with those two. Hope this helps.
  10. Yes, this does help. Thanks so much. I kept getting confused as to the different covers with same titles. Do you think it could be done without the TM, and just the readers and worktexts? Also, if it has those titles it should be fine regardless of cover? Thanks so much!
  11. It worked like a charm with my older two and they were reading at 2nd grade or above when we finished. We supplemented with old Abeka readers and ETC. They are supberb readers. My youngest hated 100EZ lessons, so we ditched it. She still struggles at the same age my other two were sailing through reading. So, it works, but every child is different. I agree with everyone else about ETC. Great program.
  12. Can someone help me figure this out? I am looking into the BJU reading 2 for my youngest, but with all the different covers that say 2nd edition I am confused about what I need to get, since I wouldn't be buying the whole kit (trying to find it used). What do I have to have and do the covers have to match? Thanks-
  13. Well, I used one, mostly for ease of checking, so I didn't have to think about it. At the time, I was homeschooling 2 children, with a young preschooler. You could do it on your own, it just will take you longer to check it. Have you tried finding a used copy? Most of the time I can justify the cost of a used TE on the amount of time it will save me over the course of a school year. Esp, if you will use it with more than one child. Good luck deciding what to do and have a great school year.
