  1. There are a lot of displaced bears this year, with the drought. My guess is bear.

A bear was seen just one mile down the road earlier this summer. So it probably was just a bear.

DH was out this evening and saw something big moving & loud moving through the woods too. He was looking for something because of dd's experience. He thought it might be a bear.

Guess we'll keep the kids out of the woods for a while. I hope it isn't making it's winter's nest here. It is supposed to snow tomorrow night.

  2. DD 13 came back to from her solo nature walk really freaked out.

She went way up our hill, across the hayfield and into the woods up there alone for a walk. She said she was standing there looking at some cool tree stump when she heard someone/thing thumping through the woods. She looked up, saw something dark and tall ---looked like a person or a bear standing up--- she thought it was me and called out to me. It kept walking away from her with heavy ponderous (HS kids and their vocab :D ) steps.

She then remembered the bear that's was spotted at Gma's 1 mile down the road earlier this summer and she ran home.

I went back with her because I thought at first the BIG animal-like thing was one of our horses who'd figured out the electrical tape holding them in the pasture wasn't electrified. :D That's when she kept going on about it walking on two feet. And that it was really tall. Dark. And BIG.

Now they're wondering how long a bear can walk on two feet.

What do you think it was? We're in the Midwest US.

  3. We are booked on Freedom of the Seas in January. We will love it - right? We are coming off of a few years of cruising with Disney, but we needed something cheaper this time! We were spoiled with Disney and I just don't want to be disappointed!!! Any hints? I haven't even started looking at that ship or at the excursions or anything!

So the ship you choose is important? Which ships, how do you pick?

When you pick your room.....midship, front, or back? Or just let them pick it for you?

Interior room's are a good choice for first timers who don't know if they'll be sea sick or not?

  5. Where do you live? Anywhere near a port? That would cut down on flight cost. You don't have to answer.

I just did a quick search on Carnival and there are a number of 4 and 5 day cruises that would easily be in that budget! And, that would leave you with plenty of money leftover for those excursions you were talking about. Here's the link for one of them:

    http://www.carnival.com/core/cruisedetails.aspx?embkCode=MIA&itinCode=KC3&durDays=4&shipCode=IM&subRegionCode=CW&numGuests=2&showDbl=False&isOver55=N&isPastGuest=N&stateCode=MI&isMilitary=N&dayOfWeek=Mon&sailDate=12/3/2012&sailingID=64137&sailingSearchParams=dat:122012,dest:C,dur:,embkCode:,pageNumber:1,pageSize:5,PastGuest:N,Senior:N,shipCode:,sort:FromPrice,StateCode:MI,numGuests:2,offersOnly:false,tgo:,Military:N,length:3,tierCode:,

If you live anywhere near that port, it could be a really cheap trip!

We're landlocked in the midwest. A flight is necessary.

  6. Can we have an idea of your budget?

Are you looking for warm? How long can you be gone? And you want time planned into the trip to do nothing?

    $1,000 - $1,500

    Warm.

    7 days - specifically Dec. 2rd - 8th

I'd love to do some of the adventures I saw on one cruise ship--ATV riding through a forest at one of the Caribbean ports of call. Off-road motorcycles were the common interest we shared back in our dating days. It's evolved more to ATVs in our old age. It would be fun to do that again together some where new.

Time to do nothing is good too.

  7. We are total newbies to swim team. My daughter turned 7 this summer and loves to swim so we signed her up for a team. I should state at the outset that she loves practice, looks forward to going and never complains or quits because it is too hard or too long.

With that said, I am wondering if the practice is average for a kid her age. It just really seems like a lot to me. She is practicing M-Th for an hour each practice. I'm not an out of shape lady and I think swimming for an hour at age 34 sounds like a killer and a total drag.

I do think practice 4x per week is optional at this age but she wants to go every single night. What is the typical practice schedule like for a young 2nd grader?

For that age our coach recommends 2-3 practices weekly. Yes, an hour is a long time. It's the best "bang for our buck" PE option. I'm glad my girls wanted to do it again. Toward the end of the season you'll know if you should do fewer or more practices because your dd enthusiasm will either wax or increase. Take your cue from her.

  8. We usually take a vacation in December.... but wait until its close so its not too cold. I don't like to spend money to freeze. I like Florida, but only if its at least in the 60s in the day, but I prefer 70s!

DisneyWorld is great. We like to get a condo nearby (Orange Lake in Kissimmee) and play in the lazy river. I haven't checked if the lazy river is open in the winter, we have only gone in summer and fall. If you don't want to go to DW, there is a ton to do on the the grounds, golfing, jet ski, activities.

We have friends that LOVE Las Vegas.

I am from California (but on east coast now), and have been to Disneyland over Christmas. It was a little chilly at night, but completely doable. If you go to the west coast, I would also go to San Diego, it is only 90 minute drive from Disneyland.

I also like Gatlinburg, Tennessee. If its cold, it works, since its the mountains!

Adding: I am NOT a cruise person. If you go on one, make sure you are not one that gets sea sick....

Have an agent working on a quote for the Disney option. I'm curious what they're going to come back with. :D

  9. We're not good at the romantic anniversary stuff.

DH's really most comfortable with the staycation. And that fits in really well with the whole month of December when something important, like a family Christmas party, is always scheduled over our anniversary date.

But it's our 20th this December and maybe we'll try something new this year. It's up to me to offer a couple options to choose from.

I've thought of a cruise.........but let me say that I have no idea which destination, cruise line, or how to get affordable flights from the midwest to the coast. Suggestions if you've done a cruise, thanks!

Or maybe a trip to Arizona or Las Vegas? A complete loss.........

We went to Sanibel Island once. It's a possiblity too, but is it too cold in December?

Disney Land, but how to make that affordable?

It would be nice to go somewhere warm, beach isn't necessary. But the entertainment provided is preferable. We tend to crash on vacation and then it doesn't make sense to do that away from home, right?

  10. This everyone has their own towel. I had 3 children that shared a bathroom. I did use the different color towels. They did not use each others AT ALL.

Each had their own hook to use.

We do use the towels more than once and probably more than 3 times.

my son and I both have bath sheets. Totally love a bath sheet.

DH has a couple bath sheets. That's his fav. too. I could use a hand towel and be happy.

  11. I vote that you get the white towels and that everyone else learns their proper towel colors. Check for colorblindness if anyone above toddler age can't find their correct towel.

We each have our own colors for bath towels. That system cut down substancially on how often I needed to wash towels. I wash them with bleach in our high efficiency washer to get them clean, but they've managed to keep their color.

    I n t e r e s t i n g thought, color blindness.

I think you're onto something here. I know one of them is....can't remember which, DH is and I need to remember which colors, ......

I think you've given me a solution to a :banghead:. And I know which kid to start with too.

  12. I sure was glad to see the last 2 posts. I was starting to wonder about me and my family that uses a towel more than once lol. After all, a person is drying off a clean body (we do use seperate towels tho, no 2 people using the same towel)

ps. when my dc were younger, they only took a bath once a week (same as how I was raised). I almost hugged a friend that admitted that her dc also only took one bath a week. I had been starting to feel abby normal..

My littles bath as needed. Recently that's daily. But usually it's weekly. :D Depends on the weather and mud.

  13. Next time I buy towels I'm buying all white. I wanted to do it 14 years ago when dh and I got married, but let myself be talked out of it. Not this time. White towels.

That's where I am leaning, but I'm worried that they'll get yucky quicker. I suppose bleach would handle that. :001_smile:

  14. Since we're all caught up on laundry today. AND I brought out all the cold weather clothing. AND purged 4 garbage bags of clothing, I don't know how they got here.....yes I do. My sister dropped off bags of hand-me-downs recently. :D

We're washing bedding today!!!! Yay. :001_smile:

I am pleading the 5th on when the last change out was for some of my older children.

This means my 13 yo is going to have to unload her teddy bear buddies from her bed....trauma. :001_huh:

  15. "Family of 7 drowns in towels. . . "

Yup, that's us. Yesterday's drama led to Mama's towel rage last night.

We have a color-coded system that wasn't working. Everyone just used whatever. BUT with everyone doing their own laundry, why not try it again?

Of course it only took me 3 loads of towels to realize someone is using 2 or 3 each time......

Thankfully they're only showering every 3rd day......but that's another post.

    We have:

    green, ds 7

    yellow, dd 5

    pink, dd 11

    purple, dd 13

    light blue, ds 9

    navy blue, DH 40

and the assorted colors of the 20 year old wedding-gift-towels, mine :glare:

I AM going to be getting myself a pretty set/color from JCP. Any color suggestions? White, linen, or Orange? It needs to say, "This is your Momma's towel!" :D

  16. So I put post it notes on the washer/dryer to help DD 11 remember what settings to use and she still looks at me like a deer in headlights.

    I'm doooooomed.

    :lol::lol: Aw, she's just giving you a pre-teen dead-pan look so you'll break.

    Keep it up.

How many loads a week would you need to go down and watch while she does it "to make sure it's done right?"

It's like a staring contest, but with the washing machines. Don't break her gaze!

One of mine tried that today..... but then she had to practice on my laundry and the babies. :tongue_smilie: It really wasn't on her list of things to do so she figured it out quick.
