  1. Anyone else starting on 8/1? I'm just hoping I have everything ready. I hate getting into it and realizing I forgot ______.

    School supplies, check.

    Books for everyone, check.

Ordered the ones I missed, check. I always miss something!

    Photocopies, check.

AHhhhhhhh, science experiment supplies --- opps! I better get on this before Wednesday.

I am excited to get back to a schedule. I don't feel so crispy right now either so that's good. But I'm not back to my enthusiastic homeschooler attitude either. My plan is to make it to December and then take a month off. :D

    :grouphug::grouphug: We can do this!!

  2. This is REALLY interesting!! I would love to be able to eat potatoes again.

Although I wonder if all the carb cravings would come back.

Have you noticed a difference in your carb cravings when you've had potatoes?

Yes, the carb beast is rattling the cage. But logic & experience aren't going to let him out. I don't like what happens when I eat carbs. Plus I've got that wonderful blood sugar monitor that keeps me honest.

  3. I don't know... I'm a bit jealous about how they just "grew" :) How oh how did that work? :) BTW, my mom mixes yams and potatoes in things like potato salad and hashbrowns. It really is great! :)

This is my first attempt at growing potatoes. You buy seed potatoes at the feed coop. Cut them so that there are two or three "eyes" on them and plant them in the garden. They're ready to harvest when the plant starts to turn brown & yellow. Dig'em up with a shovel. My son was terribly impressed!

I like the faux potato salad that uses steamed cauliflower. It's got a similar consistency and flavor.

  4. It might have something to do with how fresh they are. You might find that the older they are, the more likely they will cause blood sugar to rise. I think it has something to do with the chemistry of fiber and starches as food ages. This is just a guess based what happens to fruits and other vegetables.

ETA: If that is the case, you might find that you can eat "new potatoes" from the market. Also regular white and red potatoes at the beginning of the season might be ok, russet and baking potatoes probably are a bad idea.

I was talking to my mom about this. That's what she's guessing too. The starches in potatoes change when they're stored.

Eating potatoes in season is going to be a new thing for me. I'm happy that I can eat some sometimes. I missed potatoes.

  5. Non organic potatoes make my blood sugar sky-rocketing well to 300. Earlier this year I started eating no carb per the doctors for my health. It's kept me off insulin.

I did cheat a couple times. I had to eat some mashed potatoes at Easter dinner with my ham. And there was a couple other times at family dinners too. Each time the same result, a super high blood sugar.

We grew potatoes in the garden. They're ready. I couldn't not eat some, right? I knew my blood sugars would go high so I only ate a half cup. I took my blood sugar and was shocked! It was only 118! I had leftovers for breakfast and it was the same, nice and low!

My potatoes aren't really organic, but there are no pesticides or spray on them. I just stuck them in the ground and voila, potatoes! Actually I'm a rock star according to my ds9 who's fav food is potatoes. :D There was a bit of manure in the equation too.

So I've slept on it and I'm wondering if the difference is organic vs. non-organic. Or fresh vs. store-bought. Either way I think I've found I can eat potatoes during the garden season if they come out of my garden!

  6. Wow, I just went through this and the doctor first thought diverticulitis but that's been disproved via cat scan. So it's now the diagnosis is changed to "just a virus." Maybe there IS a virus that attacks there...

My son had this too. They really thought he had appendicitis. The tests were all "inconclusive." They had us sign papers to admit him, the anesthesiologist came in for a chat about putting him under for surgery, the nurses were getting ready to transfer us "upstairs" and then the surgeon came in and put his hands on him and decided that he could keep his appendix. He said his belly was soft.

He was right. DS recovered a day later.

  7.

Do I need to buy another pony? Can't they share?

Nope, they won't want to share. :D I'm shopping for another pony for my 7 year old ds who tells everyone he meets that he's the only kid who doesn't have a horse of his own like his sibs. Seriously, we didn't plan it that way. It just worked out.

  8. Trying to make sure they have time to enjoy their work. And trying to make sure I say, "Hurry up we've got to move along to the next subject now." less.

I'm thinking daily to do the 3R's. And then focus a subject or two per day.

    Monday - History& Science

    Tuedsay - Science Experiements

    Wednesday - Music / Art

    Thursday - Writing/Grammar

    Friday - Test day.

I'd love to hear your plan.

  9. I will admit The Pour Farm made me giggle.

How about One Hive Honey? Honest labeling.

I don't really have a name for you but good luck with your bee farming. I love local raw honey. I use it for everything.

I really like the One Hive Honey. I love raw honey too. I'm having a hard time convincing dh that he can sell some. He wants to keep all of it for himself! I think he's forgetting that there will be more later this fall.

My mother would have a bird if I took my dad's suggestion. I probably should just because of that.

  10. It's actually pretty small to even be called a business. We harvested the first batch of honey and we got 2 gallons from one hive!

My dad is my mentor and he suggested use "The Pour Farm" on the label. :glare:

Anyhoo, I'd like to put a label on it but I'm not creative enough. Thoughts?

It's a one hive operation right now. But the fall harvest should enable us to put in another hive or two next spring.

    Thanks!

  11. I know the perfect gift!! let me look for a good link.

    Very cute idea.

  12. for my daughter's horse back riding coach.

DD went to fair this year for the first time and earned several ribbons thanks to this woman.

Does anyone know what kind of a thank you gift that might be a good gift to say thank you for all the lessons, mentoring, clothing loaned, letting dd ride her horse, and for cheering her on during the whole 5 day event.

    Thanks!
