  1. I'm not sure what to use. He understands math so easy. He does get frustrated when presented with too much, so I don't want to go Drill and Kill. Any suggestions? He's 8, 3rd grade.
  2. I'm loving the look of chalkdust. My oldest struggles in math, but I'm hoping to get her to understand better with MUS. Could she then go through chalkdust? Is chalkdust geared to advanced students or is it fine for regular students? Can a struggling learner take it?
  3. I have a DD who will be 6 in Dec. She didn't do much math last year, it was suppose to be her K year. She'll be doing K math this year. IDK what math I want to do with her. My oldest does MUS cause she needs the few concepts and mastery. But I don't really like it. My 2nd does McRuffy's which I do like. But it only goes up to 4th and it takes years for each grade level to come out. 4th just came out. I'd really like her to stick with one program all through elementary. I want something colourful with only a page or two each day. Easy to teach, preferably scripted. Short lessons a must.
  4. IDK if anyone remembers my math struggles. We finally found an amazing curriculum! Me and the kids love McRuffy's. Grade 4 is to be released this summer. I think my oldest two will finished before grade 5 is out. Where do we go from there? I'd ideally like to move into where they'll be all the way through 12th grade. I want a curriculum that's strong enough for them to get into college if they choose. But not too intense. Low teacher involvement would be good too. 5 kids doesn't leave me much time to teach individual subjects.
  5. I can't decide which to do this fall with 3rd and 5th graders. If you've done either or both, did you like or this like it/them?
  6. I got the idea from another thread I read. I told her I'd buy her some gel pens and stickers and if she does her work without doodling, she can have some time to draw on it and colour it in.
  7. She's a major day dreamer! Books all doodled in. Plus I think she just doesn't want to do it. I probably do need to work more one on one with her. I typically teach lesson and give them the worksheet and they ask me if they have a problem. Maybe if I sat with her when she wrote it down she'd think harder about the right answer. It's usually something simple and close like 10-6=5 and then 2 questions later she'll put 10-5=5.
  8. Math is our only remaining problem with my oldest DD, grade 4, when it comes to picking curriculum. A large part is due to my jumping around I think. But it also appears she has some issues with getting it from head to paper. She almost always gets single digit subtraction answers wrong and she still needs adding work. However, when I drill her orally, she gets most addition right and though -4. So when I ask her she can tell me, but when I give her a work sheet, she gets it wrong. So, I've got a month til I buy at the conference. She likes that BJU has colour and stories. She likes the blocks in MUS. But she really wants BJU for the stories, lol. I've tried spiral, but it just doesn't work for her. So I'm leaning towards these two. My concern with BJU is that it's too teacher intensive (baby #5 is due this summer) and with it being a firm 165 lessons a year, it may move too fast. My concern with MUS is that it isn't a through enough program. I see so many things that are just not covered in MUS ever. Maybe not big things, but the stuff like geoboards and tangram puzzles. Working with different manipulatives aside from blocks. Just remembered about ACE. She likes to read and learn that way. Maybe that would work. IDK... So, what would you suggest?
  9. I bet the double Bs have to do with Black Berry.
  10. I wonder if he's sending it from his cell. That could be messing something up.
  11. That is rather true, but, I also like the idea of everyone being on the same subject so we sit around and talk about it and have a family discussion everyone can join in on. Especially if you buy that CD for dad's.
  12. For some reason my TOG 3 week sample just comes up as computer language. Just a bunch of letters and symbols.
  13. I did post on the board. Everyone there seems to think that doing many guides is preferably in order to keep them at their own level. Carrie said that sometimes combining is necessary. I'm kinda hoping our next baby will come in 2013 so we can combine the one I'm PG with and that one. The thing about the two I want to combine, but their too far is, in most of the US, I'm pretty sure she'd be in a younger grade. Her birthday is in Dec. But here in Ontario, all kids born in X year go to school together. So, they are only 2.5 years apart, but 3 school years. She's suppose to be K this year, but, she's not ready. She can do the math I have for her and she's learned her letters names and most sounds, but she's not able to blend. She needs more time.
  14. Just taught another HOD lesson. Ugh. I really hate note booking! My kids hate writing and it seems like too much effort for the benefit. Good thing school doesn't start again for over 7 months. I have time to choose. I'm just a little obsessive.;)
  15. I've been looking forward to Preparing for 3 years now. It's finally next year! Do I really want to jump ship now? IDK. SO hard to choose. I forgot some more pros and cons, I'll add them up there, but for those who've already read I'll add them here too. Pros for TOG: I love the map CD I love that there's tests and the student activity pages Cons for HOD: I end up making the maps. The kids colour and label them, but actually drawing an actual map of say, Jamestown, Pennsylvania and surrounding area or the Western coast of Europe is too detailed and difficult. Do you think I could do TOG with HOD's books?
  16. I guess in looking at Year 1, I just see so many books that are about other religions that it seemed like it was being focused on. I guess it's hard to judge when I don't have the TM. I've thought about doing HOD with extensions for #3 and #4. But, #3, who's now in K, would have to wait til she's in 5th grade to do Bigger with #4 and she'd miss the last 3 guides. I do have #1 and #2 in Bigger right now and my oldest will miss the last two guides, but I started them in later. I feel like I'd just be filling in the time for my DD, waiting for her to get to 5th so that they could share 4 guides. My kids are 9, 7, 5, 2 and expecting next July. I didn't realize I didn't have a sig, lol. I'll go fix that.
  17. Narrowed it down to HOD and TOG. Started this thread http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2353023#post2353023 Hoping to get some HODers attention.
  18. Ok, so, I think I've narrowed it down HOD or TOG. My pros for HOD: I love their books selections I love how other religions are introduced, but not focused on I the activities in the books I love how lessons are short and sweet My cons for HOD: The kids aren't all learning about the same subject I'm going to have to teach at least 4, if not more, guides down the road I end up making the maps. The kids colour and label them, but actually drawing an actual map of say, Jamestown, Pennsylvania and sourounding area or the Western coast of Europe is too detailed and difficult. My pros for TOG: I like the books 2nd best of all the curric. I've looked at, though they do focus on other religions and US history a bit more than I'd like. The kids can all be learning about the same thing. I love the map CD I love that there's tests and the student activity pages My cons for TOG: Heavier work load for me Don't have HOD's books Doesn't appear to be as Christ centered as HOD So, now I have to decided which pros and cons out weigh which. Is it really feasible to teach 4+ HOD TM's? How badly do I want my kids all learning about the same thing? I'd love to hear others experiences with both programs, especially if you've done both and chose one over the other. And if you chose neither and moved on, why and what did you choose?
  19. I'll have a look at it again. I can't remember why I originally ruled it out, lol. Seems like I've looked at so much and decided it wasn't for me, that I can't remember them any more.
  20. Thanks. I sent one back to you:) I really need to order the Year 1 TM I think.
  21. I can't see in the books, I just assumed. :blush5: I know almost all books have colourful covers. We used SL which was all like that and then HOD which has almost no colourful books. My kids next year will be in grade 5, 3 and 1. With a 3yo and a new born.
  22. I'm not just referring to the books in those years. IDK. My kids are still young and they like engaging, colourful books. Maybe if I had my hands on the books.
