  1. Reading Middlemarch. Eliot's penetration is making me wince.

      One of my top novels!

  2. How did I manage to make it this long without reading "ATree Grows in Broklyn?" What a great book!

  3. The beagle howls in frustration because she cannot tunnel through the walls of the living room into the side alley where, from the persistent, loud laments, we have concluded that a litter of feral kittens despairs of maternal rescue. I don't dare go in there because of the poison ivy. (See my status post previous to this one.)

Happy ending! Four kittens rescued this morning by Animal Services. All are healthy, but too young to be adopted until they go through "rescue". They are NOT headed for the "gas chambers", as we feared.

  4. I have had rosacea for three years. Now I have poison ivy all over my face to decorate the rosacea. (Itch. Ouch. Itch.)

Thank you for your kind remarks! You would not believe the variety of remedies promulgated on the Internet. One person swore by washing the face with Clorox. (?!?!) Others stood by their decision to forcefully abrade their skin. (That's the nicer way to describe their techniques!) I even read several proponents of rubbing the skin with a banana peel! I'm remaining with the "tamer" substances purchased from Whole Foods. DH, however, thinks that I sho...

  5. Poor family! After browning the garlic, onion, and ground turkey in olive oil, and adding two quarts of chicken stock, I added the diced vegetables, then the brown-and-wild rice combo puchased in bulk. Instantly, an army of dead bugs floated to the top of the dutch oven. Prospective dinner literally went down the drain. Hello bowl of cold cereal.

DH suggested that; however I would have mistrusted every grain of wild rice in case it, too, was a reconstituted insect!

I was so mad. I have learned to stir purchased grains to check for live bugs. (If you stir or disturb the container contents, watch for a few seconds. If there are live bugs, the contents will move, instead of settling still.) The problem was the wild rice, which is dark coloured, just like the bugs . . . however, wild rice does not have legs.

  7. Bread, glorious bread! . . . A young man, close friend of our family, sent home two large loaves of bread with my son when (son) returned home last evening from a visit. Breakfast toast today never tasted better!

Forgot to note that this was bread made by the young man, himself.

  10. Homemade bean spread is delicious. Do not, however, make this including vanilla coconut yogurt. I had to use up a container somehow, and we paid the penalty at lunch just now.

LOL! No, it doesn't. Lemon would, though.

  11. The Arlington Bookfair has decided to invite speakers whose whole workshops are based on attacking classical ed and its proponents. Won't be attending that this year.

Why on earth would anybody want to do this? I realize that classical ed is not a good fit for all families; however this is absurd. Can you point me toward info? Thanks! I never listen to the speakers, anyway; just go for the vendors. Still, this is significant. They already ban Catholic vendors, another absurdity.
