  1. My 7 year old loves poetry. She gets inspired by learning and reciting poems. She wrote short 5 poems Friday. We promised to get her a beautiful book she could keep them in. It is so cute, she will tell us the title and read it to us. I am amazed that she decided to do that on her own. That is fun for her.

I just downloaded the writing lectures today. My husband promised to listen. He seems to be more interested, and taking a more active role lately. I am proud of him. I can't wait to listen to the lectures again without the kids interupting and making noise.

  2. There is nothing wrong with acceleration, many kids accelerate at different paces. It is rare to finish high school at the age of 10. If this schedule worked for them, great. I question if all her children were truly ready for college at 10 years old. Were they given the option of college courses to take, or possible college campuses to attend? I can't help having doubts about this plan. I have too many unanswered questions in my mind about this plan. I will attempt to find the book and read it to see if those questions can be answered. My kids are accelerated, but not because I expect them to have masters degrees by age 15, or finish high school by age 10.

  3. Our local community college requires SAT scores to be higher for home schoolers than those of public high school students.

I do not think I could do such an unflexible year round plan. And when I had severe illness we had to take a break until I recovered. My husband was too busy making sure I was still alive, and would recover to worry about schooling. I could not have unrealistic expections of an ill child either. I want my childrens education to be driven by desire to learn, not fear or force. I am glad her family could afford all that curriculum. Or did she have each child reuse the same books? This plan is just not for me.

  4. Some turn a blind eye to imigration law, this sends the message that it is ok to come to the US illegally because nothing will be done. It is my belief that if I were to commit insurance fraud, I would be sent to jail and put on trial. I know of a case where a woman here illegally commits insurance fraud, and nothing is done. She gets away with a crime. I am confused as to how children brought here illegally by their parents are able to put their children into school. Here they want not only identification papers like birth certificate, social security card, but also rental agreements, or mortgage agreements and power bills. They want to make certain you don't try to enroll in the wrong district. So how are illegals allowed bo bring children and enroll them into school? Here a 21 yr old was featured on the news, her parents brought her here illegally as a child. She breaks the law and is told she can stay in the country and be deported at another time. She has hid from police once already, it is doubtful she will just show up to be deported. We may have laws, but their is evidence they are not being enforced very well. I would be afraid for my life to enter another country illegally and get caught.

  5. We don't have any funding at all here. I have spoken to our state and federal governments and although we pay taxes to educate other peoples children we are not entitled to any of those funds to educate our own!

    :iagree:

I have to say I appreciate being able to use the library. The state charter school is no longer an option for us. The charter wants to go strictly by the age appropiate grade level. They refused to accept transcripts stating they did not come from an accredited school. We do not feel right making our kids repeat material they have already completed. Times are tough for us at the moment, as they are for many other families. I would like some curriculum allowance.

  6. The United Daughters of the Confederate are having an Iron Cross ceremony for a Confederate soldier buried near here.

Do you think Confederate soldiers should be honored?

Haven't read through the thread yet. I am sure everyone knows this already but Confederate soldiers are not burried in national cemeteries.

This is disgraceful. Yes I understand one of the reasons the war was fought is civil rights, but that is not the only reason for the war. In school it was drilled into my head the war was only fought because of slavery. The war was also fought because of economics. Young soldiers came from other countries to fight for both sides. I am not saying it was a good thing to fight for slavery, I am saying those soldiers fought and lost their lives and after the war was over they should have recieved the same respect of bing burried in a national cemetry. So my answer is yes they deserve respect.

  7. When I was a kid we had a cat with a broke leg. This was one of the FEW times my mom took a pet to the vet, so it must have not cost too much or she would have raised a big stink about it. the kitty's leg was put on a splint and wrapped, and took a few weeks to heal. I say take her to the vet, and be honest about your budget. some vets are good to work with you.

  8. This may sound like a no brainer, but I cant figure it out. Veritas Press has Omnibus 1, Omnibus 1 first semester, Omnibus 1 second semester. Does one need to purchase all three books or just the Omnibus 1? Each book is $100, so if I could get by with just the Omnbus 1 it would be better for my budget. I can usuall find books at the library, so I would not purchase all the reading selections. I am seriously considering Omnibus.

  9. I say go to the north beach early morning before it gets hot. You can usually see dolphins, and ships on the way to River Street. The north beach is less crowded. Also if you do go to River Street, there are some big ships that go in and out. There are trolley car tours downtown, I have never taken one, so I can't tell you how good they are.
