  1. Turtle named "Turd", which is short for turdle, which is how he pronounced turtle when he named it

Skunk named "Gassy", because skunks stink

Dog named "Multi" because it is multi-colored

Bear named "Colorful" because it is, well, colorful

Sock monkey named "Beardo" because it looks like he has a beard

Almost all his animal are named based on obvious feature, like size and/or colors.

All of these are Joseph's. My others only had a few stuffed animals and they didn't have strange names at all. Joseph sleeps with between 15-20 stuffed animals every night.

  2. I don't like spring, but only because of allergies.

I hate summer, because I live in south Louisiana. I hate sweating while getting dressed when you get out of the shower. I hate walking outside and feeling like you are walking into a wall because of the humidity. I hate not being able to send my kids out during the peak heat of the day because of heat warnings. I hate having to keep all my blinds and curtains closed during the afternoons just so our a/c can halfway keep up.

I love fall and I usually like our winters. We have had an extremely wet winter this year though and I am over the rain.

I do like the beach, but we don't get to go often. We have to leave the state to get to a nice beach. The closest one is around 4 hours away in Gulf Shores, AL.

  3. I do find fault with what we pay actors and rock stars. However, the actors and rock stars aren't being paid by college students who are attending a college for an education, not to watch movies or listen to music.

Maybe you're referring to professional ball players. I'm referring to the colleges who divert tuition money to their sports program--tuition that would send the school into the stratosphere of providing an amazing education if they took the $3 milll from the football team and handed it over to the educational departments. Can you just imagine what a science lab at a college could do with all that money? It's sickening that one attends a college for an education and a large percentage of that tuition goes to the football coach.

I'm hoping to send my kids to a college where the tuition is spend on their education and not on a football game. I don't want my education money going to games.

    Switching gears:

The disparity is a problem and it takes but a small bit of study of history to see why. When the super rich have all the money it gets worse and worse for other 99% of the population and you end up with misery and poverty and revolutions. It just does. Maybe not for another 100 years here in America, but that's where it ends up. The cycle of history repeats itself over and over and over. It's pretty easy to predict when you look at it in hundreds of years and not from decade to decade.

It's sad to see this disparity happening in our lifetimes. We're watching a democracy begin to crumble where the super rich are on their way to having everything and everyone else has close to nothing. We're not anywhere near as bad as it could get, of course, but it's clearly started. I wish I knew how to make it stop.

I bolded what I am responding to. The thing about football coaches salaries, and I would guess basketball too, is that not all of their salary is funded by the school.

There is a certain amount that could be cut by the school, but they would still be making in the millions, at least at big schools.

LSU is local to me and I graduated from there. We bleed purple and gold here (my dad was even the mascot for a few years in the 1980's). Tiger Stadium holds over 102,000. Almost every game is sold out. And tickets aren't cheap. There is a huge and active booster system which provides a lot of money.

The money from the athletic department budget is paid back many times over. The article above is from Michigan, but it is probably fairly accurate for most big name schools, with various numbers.

It is still insane how much money they make, but consumers, including me and my family, fund it. We don't have tickets, but we watch every single game on tv, which drives ratings up, which causes schools to be paid more for tv games and so on.

  4. I have read this entire thread and most of the blogs/articles linked. I really hope that authorities get involved and do something.

Honestly though, what I see happening, no matter what happens legally or with CPS, etc. is that these parents will use this as an example of the danger of being disobedient and/or disrespectful. They will place any negative comment, investigation, court issues, etc solely on Alecia.

I base this on my experiences with my mom. It wasn't to this level, but it was bad. :(

  5. I absolutely require it and in our area it is viewed as extremely rude to not use ma'am or sir. We also don't let our kids call adults by their first name. Well, I guess we would if someone requested it, but it has never been requested. We use Miss or Mr. first name. Adults also use ma'am/sir and Miss/Mr. when speaking to people older than them(significantly, not a year or two) or anyone in authority.

I can't imagine not doing it that way. I would respect requests not to, but again, it has never been requested.

I am in Lousiana. I was born here and have lived in the same 10 mile radius, other than 1 year in MS as a 5 year old, my whole life.

  6. I flew at age 15 by myself from New Orleans to Baltimore. It was my 1st time to fly and we flew into the tail end of a hurricane. So, just extra turbulence from wind, but nothing dangerous.

My parents did make sure I had a non-stop flight. Part of that was because most layovers were in Atlanta and it was right at the time of the Summer Olympics there. I went to visit a friend whose family had moved. I was there for 10 days.

I would let my child fly.

ETA: I would have had to change planes in Atlanta. I don't know what that is called. Is it still a layover? I haven't flown much if you can't tell, lol.

  7. I use it. I have just over $76 since October. I don't buy anything differently than before.  We buy a mix of store brands and name brands. We tend more heavily name brand though. We get back money on fruits/veggies, toilet paper, cat little, cokes, ziplocs and other random things we don't always buy. Things like cereal and other boxed goods.

  8. OMG, I never knew the top of the over could lift up until I saw a cleaning lady do it once, just about 3 or 4 years ago. It was a revelation. And made so much darn sense because previously I'd have to go digging out under the side of the burners to fish out anything that dropped down.

I just found this out... From this thread. And, now I have a cook top directly on the counter and can't use my newfound knowledge. Darn.

  9. Under two circumstances:

A ) One has expensive taste and considers fine-quality underwear that is 'exactly the kind you like' to be an indulgence. (This is similar to 'coffee is groceries, but fancy coffee for a coffee lover who has trouble financing his/her own preferences is a thoughtful gift.')

B ) The family is in difficult circumstances, such that past-prime underwear might be more normal than abnormal, and such that anything new and nice is considered a luxury, and in the circumstances are that 'wrapping something is better than wrapping nothing' because there is no available money for gifts that are less than useful. (This is similar to the idea that one might wrap sugary breakfast cereal, or new shampoo, or steak for dinner as a gift -- just to have a gift that is needed, but slightly better than what would be strictly necessary.) This would be for immediate family only.

This. I would have typed it all out, but it was already done for me. ;)

  10. Santa presents are never wrapped. We do Santa presents first, because they aren't wrapped, so they are the first things seen. After that, we do presents. After all the presents are done, kids and adults, we do stockings.

Every person that I know does it like that. It is how my DH and I both grew up. I can't imagine doing stockings first or unwrapping Santa gifts...

ETA: Santa brings 1 or 2 presents for each child. Sometimes 1 present for each child with a bigger one to all share. This year all 3 got bikes. The rest of the presents under our tree are from us. We go to grandparents' houses and do Christmas there too. So, 3 total. We usually get the bigger money gifts because I don't want Santa getting the credit! LOL

  11. A few weeks ago, in the span of 2 days, we found out one of our dogs needed a $600 surgery and one of our pine trees had to be cut down for $600. It had pine beetles, so we couldn't wait bc they move from tree to tree. Merry Christmas to us.

A week and a half ago, my aunt passed away. Her funeral wasn't until Monday due to logistical reasons. It was my dad's sister. My dad passed away 8 years ago next month. My grandma has now buried her husband and both of her children. It has been hard to get in the Christmas spirit. This is always a hard time of year for me (since my dad died) and all the emotions just came flooding back with my aunt's death.

And, it seems like every single thing I have tried to do has gone wrong in some way or another. We were missing ingredients or the cookies didn't rise or whatever.

I am stressed, exhausted and trying to be happy bc my kids are SO excited and they deserve a mom who is enjoying celebrating with them. I love them dearly and watching them be happy makes me happy, but I am struggling this year.

  12. My boys don't usually like it, ages 12, practically 11 (12/12 bday) and 7. They do bathe though. We make them do a redo if they don't smell good enough. I once caught Micah, my middle child, sitting on the toilet, lid closed, reading a magazine while the shower ran. He was going to turn it off after about 10 minutes...

We did find out about a year ago that Joseph, my youngest, wasn't actually cleaning his feet. He thought standing in soapy water was good enough. We discovered this after a steamy hot day of playing soccer, with it raining off and on. His feet stunk SO bad. We still give him bathes periodically though because we do a tar treatment shampoo on his hair because of his eczema.

They all use Axe. The smell doesn't bother me. Other than when we bathe Joseph, they all take showers. I smell their hair after and have been known to send them back for a redo.

  13. I just saw this. I actually called Poison Control last night bc I gave my 7 year old a double dose of Children's NyQuil (no Tylenol in it). First, I called my sister who is a pediatrician. She said she thought he would be fine, but she wasn't in a situation where she could double check. I called Poison Control and they were very nice. He was fine, but they told us to watch him for 2-4 hours. They called back an hour later to check and confirm he was still doing okay.

He is 100% fine today, except for his cough. :)
