  1. It's in a few weeks. The inviting thing is what I am thinking. SHE would have been responsible for contacting the other groups she was invited as well as collecting any fees associated if she had "the list" of who was going to be allowed in, not the groups paying the facility directly We haven't turned in our money yet. The group members have just paid me, thankfully. I'm not sure she is actually the "organizer" though. The venue has done all of the legwork involved in publicizing, contacting groups, collecting the lists of attendees and fees.
  2. I will try to be gracious regardless of what happens. It's very hard to, knowing this woman, and her ugliness when I pointed out that a majority of our members are Christians, she made sure to point out that we have homosexuals in our group.
  3. The flyer that was sent out doesn't name a sponsor other than the facility. It has no name of any other organization on it. I am waiting on the facility to return my phone call. The lady handling all of this is off work today but they said she may go ahead and contact me.
  4. I do believe she did approach the facility about having a homeschool day. I suspect she initiated the idea, gave the marketing/sales director the contact info of a couple of other groups, and the marketing director ran with the idea of having a large event for homeschoolers. If the other group had actually reserved the facility for the day, the pavilion rental would have been included in the cost instead of the additional fee that was quoted to me. It was offered to us for rental at a time before/after them for a small fee. It's small details like that which don't add up to this being a private event specifically for their group and the people they invite where she signed a contract and paid a big deposit, etc.
  5. If they have a contract for a private rental, they can definitely pick and choose who they invite. That will be the key, is if she signed a contract and paid a deposit for the facility usage, but I really suspect that she hasn't.
  6. Yes it is a local publicly owned facility. The way that I was approached by the facility was that they are holding an event on a day they aren't normally open for homeschool groups to attend at a greatly discounted rate (like 1/3 the normal cost) to allow some of the families that wouldn't otherwise be able to afford to go the opportunity to attend.
  7. Definitely a massive miscommunication. I do know other Christian groups are attending also because the facility was telling me who she had given them information to contact to invite and which groups she said probably wouldn't attend (she didn't even personally invite another group that her family are members of). I don't think they paid a deposit to the facility for other than their pavilion rental because when I asked if we could pre-pay for our members, it was a very welcome idea and mentioned that the other group declined to do that and pay at entry per family. Thank you so much for your second paragraph. That is exactly what I needed to hear/read. I really WOULD love to just put her on blast so people can see the kind of prevailing attitude there is towards our group but I know it probably wouldn't be productive.
  8. I didn't really intend it as a jab. I really don't understand the perspective that she is coming from. I am a Christian as are a good portion of our members, we just don't have a Statement of Faith, Mission involving religion, etc. About 10-15% of our members are also members of her group. All of our events are held at a church. That's really where I just can't understand where the disconnect is that makes us unacceptable or acceptable.
  9. Please don't quote because I may delete later for privacy purposes. I belong to an inclusive, non-faith based homeschool group. We were contacted a couple of months ago by a local (county owned) facility that decided to host a homeschool day next month. We were given all the information, fees, etc and invited to come and I also offered to help disseminate the information to other less well known groups. The management that I spoke to was very congenial and excited about offering this event. Last month, I received an email with a flyer for the event and a premade sign up sheet with a deadline to turn into the management of the facility. We decided as a group to go and our members have signed up and started paying the associated fees. I have been contacted by the leader of one of the area's faith based groups and informed that this event is a private event for Christian homeschool families only, that there is a dress code, and that if they aren't signed up on HER list, they won't be allowed entry into the facility. I replied that we, as well as multiple other groups, were invited by the facility to this event and I was told the facility would be contacting me to fix their error because this person had made multiple errors since booking the party. There were some other things said like pointing out that we have same-sex and non-Christian families in our group. I stopped engaging with her after that and she messaged me to ask me to call her, but I have chosen not to and to deal with the facility directly. This facility does book private parties, but those are usually held after normal operating hours in increments of 2 hours. The only time I am aware of that the facility shuts down or opens preseason are for corporate events and fundraisers. This event is a preseason all day event and the flyer they sent out says nothing about a dress code, Christian event, or anything indicating that this is a private event of any kind (because why would there marketing director be sending out info for a private event?). Is is SO bad that we aren't a faith based group that we should be excluded from a fun day at a public facility offering a substantial discount to homeschool families? I honestly can't wrap my head around it being so bad because someone might be gay, Athiest, Jewish, Mormon (this particular person doesn't believe LDS are Christians) that we must be excluded and their children can't be at a homeschool event with us. I'm currently waiting on a callback from the facility to help resolve this, but in the meantime, does anyone have any sage advice on how I can handle this gracefully if we ARE uninvited and how in the world do I tell my group? I absolutely won't hold it against the facility if this other homeschool leader is taking it upon herself to decide all of these rules outside of their agreement OR if she actually has signed a private contract so they HAVE to uninvite us. I really don't think this is their fault.
  10. My current Senior is headed to Cosmetology school next year. We definitely have done things different the last 2 years since she discovered that it is her passion. Instead of doing a Trig course for her 4th math credit, we chose to do a Consumer Math program because I felt learning things like taxes, compounding interest, etc was really important to her goals of earning her own salon. She also did multiple years of a foreign language which isn't typical around here for college bound students because they do a lot of career focused education. I also didn't load her up on extra sciences, etc. We have done more than the bare minimum so if she chooses to go to college later, she is prepared for that, but we certainly didn't put time and energy into DE, AP courses, etc. Instead we have chosen to sink our funds into starting to purchase the tools to help her get started in her new life.
  11. Well after going through his practice tests with him (he's been taking a class so I just got to view them), the issue definitely isn't the knowledge in Math. The issue is test anxiety. He KNOWS how to do these problems (with the exception of some of the Geometry questions). He's panicking that he is running out of time and not reading questions carefully, etc. I think we've decided to go ahead and scrap the Algebra 2 for the rest of the year and do Aleks for the rest of the semester and summer, then restart Algebra 2 in the fall and PreCal his Senior year. I think that will get us through and help solidify where he needs some work and probably will help eliminate his anxiety to test in the fall. He wants to go ahead and take the ACT on Saturday to get it over with. Hopefully one go around will also help the test anxiety since he will firmly know exactly what to expect. His Reading/English/Science scores are all 24 + on the practice tests so he feels more confident about those.
  12. I definitely like this plan! Thank you! I will talk it over with him and see if he feels like this is a doable option for him.
  13. I had a really weird episode earlier. I've had a pretty bad headache all day. Thought it was a caffeine headache so I drank a Mountain Dew, took some Motrin and went on with my day. While I was cooking dinner, the left side of my face felt like I lost the feeling in it, but I could feel it (hard to describe). I immediately thought stroke so I went to check myself. Blood Pressure was 140/90 (standing), could hold arms up just fine with no weakness, had an even smile with no droopiness, no numbness in legs, no confusion, speech was perfectly fine. It lasted about 5-10 minutes and feeling returned to normal. It's now 2 hours later with a mild headache but my left leg is kind of tingly. Blood pressure is 118/72. Was this a migraine with an aura? Could it have been a TIA? I already have an appointment scheduled with my PCP so I will definitely mention it. I'm late 30s, former smoker, 20 lbs overweight but active and eat fairly healthy. What say the Hive?
  14. He is still early in Algebra 2. He had a health crisis that caused us to lose quite a bit of time then had to back way up. He is playing catch up on it now.
  15. I saw a discussion about that on a local board. It was pointed out that while Florida has fewer school districts, they have ginormous school district areas with multiple sub-districts with their own assistant superintendents for each sub-district.
  16. DS has been taking practice ACT tests for 2 weeks while doing some Math review and the highest he has managed to get on the Math portion is an 18. He admittedly doesn't remember a lot of Geometry from last year and hasn't completed Algebra 2 so hasn't learned functions yet and he said there were several function questions. He is testing on Saturday. I was going to have him do PreCalculus next year but I'm reconsidering because I feel like, based on his Math scores, he needs some remediation in Geometry before he tackles Precalculus/Trig. How would you go about remediating to make sure he's solid for college? He has 3 Math credits already and 2 years of high school left so we definitely have time. Would you do a semester of Geometry and another semester of Algebra 2? Any other suggestions?
  17. Could you recommend a lab course to do with it? I know there are some out there on homesciencetools but I know there is another one too but I can't remember it off the top of my head. I'm definitely not opposed to doing it with him at home to make sure he doesn't blow up my house.
  18. Thank you for your input. I'm not so worried about putting AP on the transcript as I am college preparedness. He checked it out and said he thinks the format of the course will work well for him.
  19. What about the Thinkwell AP Chemistry course? He's extremely bright but quite an underachiever but at this point he does plan on pursuing a STEM field so I think he might need to be challenged some to prepare him.
  20. I posted it over there! I did get sleep, Thank you!
  21. I am looking for a computer based, secular Chemistry curriculum for my 11th grader for next year. Anyone have any suggestions or know of something at least close to one that is affordable? I will be in college a good portion of the day next year so DS needs something independent with accountability for him, and less grading & staying on top of it for me. Help!
  22. To be honest, I do consider these things necessary for a good education. And thankfully so do the parents and teachers who have been in the OK State Capital for the last week fighting for those things. It sounds like the people in your state need to follow their example if things are truly as you describe.
  23. I'm looking for a computer based (not virtual) Chemistry curriculum for my 11th grader next year. Something that auto-grades preferably and is hopefully secular. Help! ANNNNNDDDDD I just realized I posted this on the wrong board. SMH, I need sleep.
  24. I live on a border state and they do have a health care crisis coming too for sure. Most of the doctors here haven't been paid for their CHIP patients in a year. There is only 1 pediatric practice that will even accept them as patients. There are NO OB/GYN docs on the OK side of the border. The OBs on our side won't see the pregnant patients without a referral now.
