  1. Where was this advice last summer? I accidentally planted butternut squash in my front flower beds. Three healthy plants that I guess came from the compost. They're doing better than the squash I actually planted!!!

I had butternut squash do the same thing!  In Texas no less!  In a forgotten corner of the yard. It was amazing how those compost volunteers thrived while I babied other things that struggled so.

  2. Zucchini latkas!  So yummy!  Same recipe as potato latkas.  I do them in a nonstick electric griddle so they don't need all the oil you would use for traditional latkas.  Serve with applesauce or sour cream!

And I found that if you shred the zucchini  and let it sit in a colander to drain in teh fridge overnight it really helps pull out the extra moisture.  (But doesn't work for potatoes, they get dark.)

Plus I hide it in meatballs, meatloaf, make muffins and have a incredible chocolate zucchini cake recipe!

  3. Coffee is in the pot, on the coffee maker with cups, spoons, creamer and sugar cubes.   Tea is a water in the hot pot and with tea bags available on the counter.

If it is a small group and they are just tea drinkers, I would make loose leaf tea in my from England, English tea pot that has a matching sugar and creamer.  My tea pot was one of the largest I saw when I was looking for one in England.  It doesn't hold many cups when using regular American coffee cups.  So really this is a two person thing.  Honestly I could drink the whole pot myself....

If I ever have to do a fancy tea, like as a commander's wife, I could pull out my depressionware tea cups and saucers.  They are true teacup sized.

    No help on honey.

  4. I like the EAS carb control ones.  There are two kinds of chocolate, plus vanilla.  Possibly a strawberry but I could be wrong.

I don't like the Preimer ones you get at Costco.  I think they are way too sweet.  Like sickenly sweet.  And you would think they were cheaper because it's a big box and Costco, but they actually cost a few cents more than the EAS four packs at Target.

I can drink them at room temp, but I like them much better if they are at least a little cold.

  5. In 22 years we have lived in 9 houses, plus TLF while house hunting.

When in TLF you only have 6 plates, cups, bowls, silverware and maybe three pots/pans.  Never enough to fill a dishwasher with only the three of us, so I always hand wash there.  The nicest thing about the dishwasher there is I use as a dish drainer while washing.  Did the same in a regular house with no electric for a week post hurricane.  So you may think you don't need it, it's nice to have for bigger loads, but it is SO much nicer to not have a dish drainer on the  counter taking up space.   Not saying you should buy it as a giant dish drainer, but it is nice to have it and use it to keep from sucking up counter space.

Other things I learned over all the kitchens:  Pull out cupboard shelves are wonderful!  Worth the extra money.  Built in cutting boards and NOT worth the money.  They are large and wood and hard to clean.  Pop up appliance shelves are only worth it if you are short.  My KA mixer sat on one, but it was too low for me to work with it there, but my 5' 4" mother thought it was a great height.  Lastly I really liked the pull out knife drawer.  So much better than a knife block on the counter. BUT you have to be sure you have the type of knife that fits it correctly.

This house has the drop in sink where the counter is higher than the sink and there is no side edge for crumbs to get caught in.  Another may have as well.  That is nice.  Most of the last houses have had the sprayer and faucet as all one piece and you flip it.  This house has the old fashion separate faucet and  sprayer, which I like a lot less.  I think garbage disposals are a waste and shouldn't be installed any longer.

  6. Our couch and chair survived two dogs, two cats and two young kids before we got it re-covered at about 12 years.  It was light colored and we were in NC with orange clay dust that would come in on the dogs who would rub up against it.  They were recovered 10 years ago and are still doing great.  We also eat in while sitting in them often.  Something gets on them we just touch them up with Carpet Resolve.

Right now we are happy with them and will keep them till we at least stop moving.  Then maybe buy specific for that room/house furniture.  We add in extra sofa/love seat seating with Freecycle/Craig's list stuff as we only seem to have a LR and FR in every other house.  So every two years it seems we get rid of the extras.  Two years/new house later, look for more and then keep them till we move and see what space the next house has.

  7. All beef hot dogs are the best, and my husband agrees with that, but he can't eat beef so we get turkey or some kind of pork/poultry mix.

I like chilie cheese dogs if the chilie is the right kind.  Like Tony Packo's (Klinger knew what he was talking about there!)  I've had dirty water dogs from carts on  NYC street corners to gourmet dogs.  Toppings depend on the offerings.  But at home, home is different.....

Brace yourselves, I don't remember how it started, but at home I put a little ketchup on the dog, turn it a little so it's more on the bun, and then top it... applesauce.  Yes applesauce.  Something about the cold applesauce, with the little bit of ketchup on the warm dog it is just so good....

I know it's weird.  But I've been doing it for 40 years, so I don't think it's going to change.

I try to remember at barbecues where there is applesauce present that it should be a "home" thing.  But sometimes I forget. And yes, it stops a few people in their tracks.  My brother, all these years later, every time he sees it (which is only every few years) gives me a "STILL???"

Like I said.  Weird, but good.....

  8. On our china tour we had about 8 kids 6 and under.  4 of them were blonde, blondes, one was dark hair (and got left alone) and my son was a dark dirty blonde to almost brown at that point.  The would run up and take pictures.  The one little girl had ringlet curles on top of it, so they really wanted her picture. It is a more in your personal space society, but sometimes they got a little pushy about it.  Their was a family with an older teen who was black with our group as well.  They got similar treatment with the photos, but I don't think they were as pushy with them as they were adults.  But the daughter had incredible hair.  It was  ten years ago so I don't remember exactly, but she had braids or twists or something along those lines.  They were fascinated with her hair!  It was quite beautiful and I remember she was very pretty, but it was just so different from what they are used to seeing.

I do have a really neat pictures of the kids sitting on the floor at the airport playing some little game.  On one side of them are about 10-12 Chinese people grouped together all taking pictures of the kids.  So I took a picture of all the people taking pictures of the kids.  It was sort of neat and weird at the same time.  But they were very nice and non obtrusive about it at the airport.  The places we had the biggest issues were the tourist places.   Just like us, the Chinese had come in on tourist buses from somewhere else.  Seeing the kids was all part of the vacation sightseeing to us.  It was less an issue in the city, shops and airports.

  9. I've always felt the same way about the Pioneer Woman. Yuck, a million times over. Seemed like she was everywhere. I heard she even has a magazine?

I remember years ago a story about a blogger named Heather who wrote a good story on how the PW treated her and a group of visitors like crap. Classic. Yet still she gets plastered across the media.

Always a way to make a buck. Martha and Rachel Ray did the same.

I can't stand her!  I read her Heels to Farm Fields or whatever it was called when she was putting it on here and remember thinking "oh give me a break!"  over and and over.  And then her show came out.  I can't imagine feeding my kids like that on a regular basis.  It was like Paula Dean and her over butter on and in everything insanity.  I mean I get it, you can cook.  But everything I ever saw her cook seemed so heavy in fats and calories.  Yes home cooked, but it never seemed all that healthy and I can't imagine cooking that way day in and day out.  And saying it's okay because she's feeding "real cowboys/ real men" oh whatever.  And she is everywhere.  Even running on a tv in the BX kitchen section.

I will say I liked her photos.  She should have stuck to that.

  10. Call her back tell her if she is doing this to make sure she has enough cake for 40 people, plus the supplies.   If not, then sorry you just can not do it.  It is already something out of the ordinary and you don't want to the be the ones to start a new 'thing' with the group.

  11. I made Apple Pie jam and Carrot Cake jam one year for christmas.  Something a little different, but really good.  The carrot cake was an excellent smear on top of a cream cheese smear on a bagel.  The apple pie was awesome on toast.

  12. We have rented sinced coming into the AF.  We move every 2-3 years.  We never wanted the hassel of selling so often or renting while living who knows where.  Works out great.  In theory, we could have made money by buying and selling, especially since we are in a military, heavy turn over areas.    But we pay no property tax, no mortgage, no upkeep, no maintenance.  AC and hot water went (in different houses).  Called the landlord and they dealt with it. Not our problem, not our worry.  Which is good as my husband is not a fix it guy.  And he can't handle me fixing it.  Once he retires, we'll buy.  At that point his plan is just to buy for cash, skip the mortgage.  I'm not sure about that as we could probably use the debt for a bit.  We don't carry any debt and our credit score drops a few points a year.

Plus with renting, you pick a house your are comfortable with. You aren't buying and then re doing kitchens and baths.  Redecorating and landscaping.  So you save a ton of money there. Granted it helps knowing you are only their for a short period of time so it is easier to live with what the kitchen or bathroom.

  13. We were supposed to attend a funeral in Houston Sunday. I'm surprised the funeral hasn't been delayed due to the storm and because it hasn't my mil is calling my husband to say how he really needs to be there. How it's hardly even raining right now. Ugh. No amount of telling her that this is just the very start of the storm hitting that area so far and that by nightfall she could be without electricity and landlocked due to flooding is convincing enough. The news is all an exaggeration she says it's no big deal in Houston. She says all this on the phone while she is shopping for new curtains and rods for grandma's living room at a Lowes somewhere there. Dh has tried saying if they stay, they need to leave asap after the funeral. But she just keeps saying that if he leaves Oklahoma now, he can be there by 2pm. Um. No. Hells no. Sorry dear dead relative. But no.

That is nuts.  We are in San Antonio.  It was drizzly rain earlier, nothing now.  Winds were hitting 25mph.  News was saying they could hit 70mph later today.  The wind will be a problem when it takes out power lines.  The water will be a problem when the underpasses all flood because there is no where for the water to go.  Plus there is all the  little creeks that flood with all the run off that run over roads.  There is a reason those signs are on the side of the road with the numbers on them.  It tells you how many feet deep the water is.

But the stupid thing with your MIL is that the storm is suppose to travel back downward toward the coast before it slingshots right up toward Houston tonight/tomorrow.  Which actually is really surprising the funeral has not been postponed.  Even if they don't have damage, they are going to have roadway flooding.

As for the writing your info on you with sharpie --  I remember way back when the Mississippi River flooded so severely back in the late 80's or so seeing an interview about how these people were rescued off their roofs by boat.  But the first boat couldn't hold them all so they took all the little kids first.  So these parents had to watch a boat drive off with their kids while they waited for the next boat.  When the parents got picked up, they got dropped off at a different area from the kids and it took a long time to find the kids because they were so little and scared and couldn't tell their names.

I remember thinking that day, if I ever have kids and are in any situation like that, they are getting Sharpied!   Name on their arm, important info, including my mom's name and phone number on their back (we never live near her, so odds are good if our area is under weather, hers is not).  And I've thought it every time there is something like this.  It was part of our Typoon/evacuation prep when we lived on Okinawa and he was already 5/6.  But kids get scared.

So I get the Mayor or whoever saying write your name on there both as a scare tactic as well a help for them to id your body.  But it is a good idea for kids, special needs adults and easily confused elderly.

  14.

But oh my goodness, the rush of anxiety that came over me when she called to confirm. The dread. Ugh. We used to go out and do things to pass the time but now she can't get out and walk much so we will be sitting and looking at each other for a week. Ugh. I am going to take her grocery shopping to buy what she wants for the week to take the food pressure off.

    Just had to vent. Ack!

Try jigsaw puzzles.  Gives you something to do, while sitting around doing nothing.  Doesn't require chit chat since you are studying the board.  If you have time, you can order ones done with family pictures on them.  Then you can talk about the pictures.  "oh that was my favorite outfit on her at that age, that was a fun vacation, yada, yada."

If you don't have a lot of space, those puzzle mats don't cost much, but are great for rolling up the done puzzle parts till you pull it back out the next day.

  15. I get my audio books from the library, listen while walking and return. So moving them to my ipod was way too much work.

I bought my discman last year at Best Buy for $20 or $24. The no skip feature has improved from the days it all began 25 years ago.

  16. Lots of christmas babies have half birthdays.

We had a lake house. My cousin was a Feb baby, his sister Aug. she always got to take friends to the lake. Finally my aunt realized he could have a halfish party and do the lake.

Weather, temp and situations are all factors. She can have a 10/12ths party.

  17. We move about q 2 years. The goal is always to get a garage with room for stuff and cars. Some houses are better than others.

In the very hot south we worked it so my car could go in the garage so baby -preschooler didn't have to go into a hot car.

In the snowy north, by sixth grade, bikes and things took up a lot of space. As a christmas gift the boy and I moved bikes and summer stuff to the shed so the husband could park in there fir the winter.

Two houses have either had no garage or tiny garage (1930's cars were a lot smaller when that house was built!)

Size of garage is a factor. If there is a shed to hold things is a factor. If there is a garage is a factor as well as remote opening and keypad.

How pretty the garage floor is, is NEVER a factor!
