  1. A house with hundreds of yellow jackets is not habitable. You should not have to pay rent. I would look into your states laws landlord/tenent laws and see if they there is a renters rights type group that could give you more specific information about the local laws and protections.

  2. I was wondering if we could make a list of homeschool book stores or other favorite local bookstores. I know someone who used to visit Exodus Books everytime she went to Portland. In light of the fact that so many local bookstores are closing because of Amazon and online stores I was thinking we could make a thread with our favorite local bookstore. They don't have to be homeschool bookstores because I know they aren't that common so just list your favorite local bookstore or other favorite place to buy homeschool curriculum and the city and state or country. If you are like me, you would visit a bookstore on your next vacation if you knew it was going to be a good one!

  3. We are getting early intervention for my 18month old with developmental delays in the area of auditory comprehension, expressive communication, and personal social.   So the early intervention folks have been super helpful and responsive and told me to think about what I want in a Individual Family Service Plan.  We don't have a diagnosis and he doesn't have any really obvious issues, other than not talking/communicating/responding.  Hearing has been testing and he does hear find.  He is an overall happy kid, motor skills are slightly delayed, but that is not a concern really at this point.   Since, I don't have experience with this, I was wondering what other people have asked for and what has been most helpful.  I know this is not for a school age kid, but i'm hoping getting early intervention will hopefully head off some of the issues that i have had with my older child who didn't get early intervention and now I wish that he did.

  4. Wow. Funny, although at a doctor's office I wouldn't have a problem with it. I don't personally do it but I also drop off all our old magazines at the doctor's office to get rid of them. I think the doctor's office has plenty to spare. But maybe the person should just take the whole magazine so as not to annoy the person who looks at it next.

  5. Oh I'm so sorry. I remember my FIL trying to reason with my grandmother in law when she had Alzheimer's and it was horrible. She would get so agitated and and trying to reason with her was like trying to reason with a toddler. I have read about a study that showed that Alzheimer's patients that listened to their favorite music from their past did better and were about to reduce the amount of antipsychotic medication they had to take. Maybe create a playlist of her favorite songs or hymns. It couldn't hurt and maybe it would give here a little help while her meds get figured out.

  6. ETA:

None of our tetanus shots are up to date. Being accident prone, I'll probably check if the nearby walkable Safeway or CVS pharmacy has that service as we have to drive to our general practitioner. [/url]

I wouldn't worry to much about being up to date on tetanus. The latest research shows it last 30 years rather than 10.

  7. If they're not self-supporting, then the parent still has leverage. I'm under no obligation to keep my offspring who are 18+ and high school graduates on our health insurance policy nor assist them with college expenses. If they want the financial assistance, then I have every right to tie strings to that assistance.

Sure, you can give your children whatever ultimatums you want. I'm not sure that is the best way to foster a healthy relationship with anybody though.

  8. just as those colleges that require the vaccine are free to tell the "adult student" they've been disenrolled because the vax is mandatory for all students. and yeah - there are universities where it's non-negotiable.

my dd had a health issue. (paid all her own bills- including her mortgage) I would advise, suggest, strongly encourage - I finally told her if she wanted to ignore me and handle it (or not) herself - she was NOT allowed to gripe about it to me.

Having a university require it is completely different than a parent requiring for their adult child. I don't think that is comparable. And some universities do allow exemptions, which the adult student would have to sign for, not the parent.

  9. Thanks so much for the thoughts and suggestions. I am finally getting back to this after a day filled with OT, teeth extractions and an early intervention appointment for another child. So I need to sit down and think and read through these responses again and figure out a system. We had a previous therapist (3 years ago now) that was really good at tracking things like this.

  10. My library has both. I don't have to put things on hold on hoopla so that is nice. Overdrive I often have to wait weeks for a book. Hoopla also saves my spot when the book expires and I don't think overdrive does. It also is easier to check out books via hoopla, just one click, versus having to click though a bunch of differ pages and then download. But I'm not sure I would pay 40 dollars for it. It does have video and music too, so that is something to consider as well.
