  1. We're using Apologia Astronomy and we're not strict young-earthers. My DH believes the Lord created the world using evolution and I can see that both old and young earth creationists have valid points. I guess you'd say that we're just a confused group of people! Anyway, the astronomy text has a very explicit young earth point of view. We're in the middle of lesson three and there have already been several times where the author pushes the young earth creationist point of view. It doesn't bother me - I find it interesting. I'd say it would just depend on how much the young earth point of view bothers you. If it is a deal breaker, you may want to stay away from Apologia.
  2. I used Phonics Pathways plus lots and lots of library books to build up her fluency. Phonics Pathways is boring, IMO, but it really helped develop DD's phonics skills.
  3. We're using this with Sonlight's Core 1. We simply follow the schedule in the IG, which is doing about 4 readings a week. We get our memory verses elsewhere. It's a great book!
  4. That's a good point. Here's what I did to avoid that: We did P 4/5 when she was 3 and started Core K when she was 4 1/2. She was ready for it, so I went ahead. We took 18 months to finish it by adding in supplementary material. We'll take another 18 months to do Core 1 so we'll end up being done with Core 1 at the end of her first grade year.
  5. I've done Sonlight Cores P 3/4, P 4/5, K and now Core 1. Your DD sounds a lot like my oldest. When my oldest was 3 and a great reader, we did Core 4/5. It was a great fit for us.
  6. My oldest DD learned to read using 100EZ at the age of three. She LOVED it and took off reading. She's an excellent reader at the age of 6. In a couple of months or so, I'll be using it with DD#2. She's almost ready to try it.
  7. I'm using Apologia Astronomy with my 6 year old daughter and it is a good fit for us. While it does have good information, I would think that the tone is perhaps too "babyish" for an 11 year old.
  8. I pre-ordered it from Amazon.com and the projected shipping date is May 9th.
  9. We have done P 3/4. P 4/5, and K. We just started Core 1. We LOVE it!! Cuddling on the couch with a pile of good books for school is priceless. Read the "Reasons not to Use Sonlight" and if none of those are deal-breakers, go for it. They have an EXCELLENT return policy if you don't click with it. Hi Chaik! :seeya:
  10. When my oldest finished 100EZ, I bought Phonics Pathways and continued our instruction with that. I have to say it was kind of boring, but it was very useful. My DD got an outstanding phonics basis and is an excellent reader. We also started using Explode the Code 1 and have continued on through ETC 8. Most importantly, though, we got tons of readers from the library and read, read, read.
  11. My girls are young yet and since we use SL for our main curriculum, much of it will be reused for the younger girls later. We spent about $800 total last year and $1300 the year before. This year we've already spent $400, so it obviously varies from year to year for us.
