  1. I'm so glad the co-op went well!

I guess we are taking a snow day even though its not snowing yet. (It is freezing rain/sleet!) Our sleepover guest will be with us all day so they are all playing playing playing!

The toddler is having so much fun with the big kids that I've gotten a ton accomplished this morning. I made a big breakfast, deep cleaned the kitchen, deep cleaned the upstairs bathroom and the downstairs bathroom. I've folded and put away a load of laundry and have another load washing right now. I vacuumed the stairs and watered the house plants. I am just tickled, I never get this much done in one shot! 😁

After a lunch break, I'm going to tackle the four huge tubs of hand me down kid clothes we were given. They've been stacked in the garage for a couple of months. I hauled them up to the middle of the boys' room so now I have to get through it! 😄

We'll wrap up with a snowy movie night tonight and pizza!

  2. Let us know how you like the co-op. I'm excited for you both! 😊

Regular school day here. Reading, memory work, language arts, math, geography, and science.

Dd10 has a cousin coming tonight for a sleepover. I am so excited for her. We are not a sleepover family but this cousin is very well behaved and chill and she needed someplace to go tonight.

  3. We had to run to the store for something we needed for school. So we got a few other things we needed while we were there.

We are back home now and back to work. Ds has to get dental work done this afternoon so we will probably take a subject with us to work on in the waiting room.

Math, language arts, memory work, and science are today's subjects. We ended up at the library yesterday afternoon so all they really want to do is read their new books, lol! There's a lot of that going on, too. Which is a good thing!

  4. I don't have any advice, I just want to say I am so sorry for your loss. My dh has been very sick for a few years now, and so much of what you've said in these posts rings true.

Sending you virtual hugs, it sounds like you are doing amazingly well. Staying busy when you need to, greiving when you need to, and being really in tune with your kids.

  5. I did sleep much better last night, thanks Critter! 😊

Today's plan: put chicken thighs in the crock pot, drop dh off at work, bank, quick grocery store run, prep food for my volunteer thing, drop off prepped food, pick up dh from work, do some light school with the kids, prep for long medical appointment day tomorrow, get to bed early.

  6. Well, there was a family crisis on Monday so no school work got done. It poured over into yesterday, so no school work got done.

As a result of this life junk, I could not sleep at all last night. I think I got 2 hours of sleep. Maybe. 😰 So of course, I am exhausted, have a headache, and my eyes burn. But I'm gonna get another cup of coffee, be the adult, and restore some normalcy here. We all need it.

So we will be doing some school work no matter what! Pencil to paper! Then I'm going to take a nap this afternoon! Lol! 😴

  7. Lol on the new years resolutions, Critter! 😄 I don't even call them that anymore because it seems so synonymous with failure. I try to set a few goals that actually really should happen. I don't want to look back at my 2018 list at all. I know I failed miserably! 😥 Several of those goals are in progress, just not yet completed. So I might make my 2019 list today without looking at 2018, knowing some of the goals are the same but that's okay. Sometimes things just take longer than you anticipated, right?

We are starting regular school back up today with a late start. We are moving slowly this morning and I have a few errands to run and I just want to get them over with so we'll do those first today. Highly unorthodox! 😂

August: Driving to Cincinnati, OH to see the circus. Oops, I meant SIL's wedding. Silly autocorrect.

    Silly auto correct indeed!!! 😂😂👏👏

Congrats on moving! Was it you that was wanting more sunshine? If so I'm happy for you. And a little jealous... Off to sit in front of my "happy" light on yet another gray, blah day...

Give us updates on the move!

  9. There is a beautiful (but modest) 100 year old house in an equally beautiful (but modest) neighborhood that I drive through every day to get in and out of my cookie cutter cul-de-sac neighborhood. I have drooled over this house for the entire 3.5 years we've lived here. (We were supposed to only be renting here for a year but dh got sick so we're still here.)

Well, a for sale sign went up so, of course, I had to look it up online. 😁 It has several beautiful features but it needs a lot of work. The kitchen was redone poorly. The bathrooms need redone. There's still plaster walls and old yucky tile ceilings throughout.

With dh's health, there's no way we could take that on. At this point we just need cheap. So I looked at a few dirt cheap listings while I was at it. And I found one that would be amazing for us. 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 car garage, huge kitchen, 2nd living room. It has a sunroom that could be a school room and a workshop that could be a work from home office for dh. It has a huge backyard so the kids could actually have a swing set and other fun things (our yard here is tiny). It needs new flooring and fresh paint. There are no appliances in it. This is much more doable than the work the other house needs.

So, why do I get online to drool over houses and make myself miserable when we are not actually in the market for buying a house? My evening is ruined and I have only myself to blame. 😒 I guess I'm just tired of renting. Blah paint, tiny yard, no garden, and I don't get to do little house projects.

I know I'm being a whiner. Our house is fine. Its safe and warm and I have nothing to complain about. Its just not mine. 😕

And somewhere stateside with the family yet to be determined. Most likely either Colorado Springs or Dollywood in Tennessee.

Have you been to either of these locations? I can't speak for Tennessee, but we absolutely love Colorado Springs in the summer! One of my favorite vacations!

Her cousin is coming over so she will be playing all afternoon.

We decided to try a HS CO. It meets twice a month. She needs more contact with others and I hope this helps her make more friends. We will try it for the first time in January.

She is very social and friendly child. Her current friends lead busy lives and aren't always available.

Going to check in with HS Mom's at church for playdate. Only problem is they have lots of kids and busy schedules.

This is one of my biggest struggles! We did Homeschool PE last year but it hasn't worked this year for a variety of reasons.

We live in a very rural/small community and, while there are a couple of co-ops, neither of them work for us.

Plus, like you said, everyone is so busy, its hard to get together. We had several really great field trips and park days last year that I spearheaded with another hs mom. But her schedule has gotten so busy, it hasn't happened this year at all.

We did manage a playdate this month (for ALL the kids- the toddler gets lots of play dates! Lol!) and a lot of family time. We have a field trip planned with a new hs family next month. And we might start going to Homeschool PE again and just make it work.

I hope your new co-op is a good fit for you guys!

Today has involved a trip to the paint store for a project, intro to scratch, lots of reading, and baking cookies and black bean brownies. Oh, and I got dinner in the Crock Pot.

Family movie night tonight plus the kids want to play one of their new board games, so we'll do that, too before bed.

  12. Camping in the spring at a not too far National Park.

Beach trip in the spring. Not sure where. We are good at last minute throw it together beach trips. 😉

St. Louis this summer for a big event we are SUPER excited about!!!

New York in the fall for a sort of pilgrimage we are also super excited to do. It dovetails nicely with the St. Louis thing so I'm over the moon at how its working out. Especially since we have done zero travelling in years due to dh's health.

Camping again in the fall. Location tbd.

I am very happy about our plans. Very.  💞💞💞

  13. Well, I guess I've been going with the flow on how many days we take off during this winter break time frame. We have taken off all week so far, although we've been at the library for a long time this morning soaking in all the book goodness to get back in a learning frame of mind. We will probably go get lunch out here in a few minutes to keep things fun. 😊

I'd like to parlay this into some project based learning tomorrow which will be a good "Fun Friday" finish to the week.

Then I think we should start back to a regular school schedule on Monday. I'm pretty content with this plan. 😊

Glad you seem to be on the mend, Critter!

I thought the title said ‘If you got TIRED...’

When I went back to work after 20 years at home, I included volunteer jobs and that helped me land the first job, which I then used to land the second.  Perhaps you can use your part time gigs to land a full time job and then use that to land a better one.  Best of luck to you.

It was a toss up between "tired" and "hired" but hired means $ so I went with that one for now, lol! 😂

Filing is office work. (I actually would love a filing job but I didn't think they existed anymore. 🙂 )

I know, right?! This office is so behind on the times, its crazy. Someone told me they were hoping to move to a network computer system soon and they'd love to have me back for data entry. I'd love to do that but I can't wait around for it either.

Thank you, everyone, for sharing your experiences and giving suggestions. I've changed a few things on my resume and it does look less like I've been living under a rock for the last 10 years, lol!

I'm seeing a lot of you got your jobs, in part, from a connection to someone that could recommend you. So I contacted 2 friends in my field and they've both said they'd be happy to put my name forward. I'm so nervous! 😲

Do you have time before applying for positions to do some volunteer work so you have some more recent experience and contacts?

Eta: definitely include your temp positions!

I have listed as a personal reference, my superior on a volunteer project that I'm still actively involved in. ( Today, in fact! Lol!) I didn't list the actual volunteer position the way that I did with previous jobs.

So you think that's something that would be weighted more heavily in my favor than what I was imagining?

  17. I have had a few temp jobs this summer until now but now I'm needing to go for a permanent position. I don't have a sought after degree that will leverage me right back in to the workforce.

So if you have successfully obtained a job in spite of a giant employment gap, how did you do it?

What would be good to include in my cover letter?

My resume currently has my last 2 permanent jobs from ages ago. I've spoken to my old supervisors (we are still friends) and they will give me solid references but that doesn't change the old dates!

The temp work was babysitting and filing. Should I really put those on my resume? They seem so random and lame. (On a resume. I actually really enjoyed both jobs!)

Uggh! I feel totally at sea with this! Please help!
