  1. Has anyone used this course? If so could you please share your experience with it? Did the questions / disccussions seem canned, as in basically the same thing for each book? Can you compare it to Excellence in Literature?
  2. As I'm working on lesson plans, in the TE there is a section on Integrating, Synthetic, Coordinate and Transformational Geometry. In this section it discusses the value of an integrated approach, integrating coordinate and transformational points of view with the synthetic approach... alloowing students to see how coordinates and transformations interconnect with synthetic ideas, noting the unity in mathematics. It also solidifies algebraic ideas and skills, with algebra and geometry building on each other. Problem solving skills are also enhanced offering a variety of strategies and methods ... With all of that said, I see the benefits. Thus I'm curious of those of you that have used Jurgensen's... did you implement this approach and schedule lesson plans accordingly? Topics would be covered as follows: Basic figures Deductive Reasoning Parallel Lines and Planes Congruent Triangles Coordinate Geometry Quadrilaterals Transformations Inequalities in Geometry Similarity Right Triangles Circles Constructions and Locus Area Volume Composition and Symmetry Coordinate Proofs Choosing an Approach Any thoughts? Any reason why you would not go by this approach and go straight through the text chapter by chapter verses integrating? Thanks ladies!
  3. Thank you! That answers all my thoughts and questions! :hurray:
  4. We have used DIVE for Integrated Chem and Physics, and ds has loved it. We used the Internet Reading and the BJU text, and he liked it as well... just alot of reading, which was fine. Anyway, he wants to use DIVE for Biology. He is more a Physics/Chem type student... so we are looking for a "simple" text to cover it well, but also get it done and not end up bogged down. The website recommends either BJU or Apologia as a text. If you were looking to "get it done", which text would you use?
  5. I just received a reply to an inquiry from DUke TIP regarding Jurgensen's Geometry. Apparently due to technical issues, they are no longer offering this course. :crying: Does anyone have any other suggestions for videos etc to use along side the text? I have purchased the TM as well... ds just enjoys the video instruction as well... Any other thoughts or knowledge or other tools available?
  6. Yes, the first book.... We have been using the Math Without Borders Video lessons..., and I COMPLETELY forgot about the Assignment list... Somewhere along the way I read on here if your kid is a STEM student to complete either all odds OR evens, and ALL word problems... and that just stuck like glue. Even in the videos at the end he says to do as many of the word problems as you can and to take several days.... I just printed out the Assignment list..... My kid is gonna KILL ME !!! ............
  7. Thanks Sue! He is a STEM student... headed into Aviation/Engineering.... He's an only, thus I am working through math with him, for various reasons... As a teacher, I need a refresher and actually like math  and feel it's important to be able to answer questions, etc.... But yeah..... 41.... Word Problems....... We are at least over the hump day Wednesday and Friday will be here soon! :hurray:
  8. Ok, so we've been plugging away with this course quite well... Working all the evens in every lesson with the occasional odd numbered problem for reinforcement or review before a chapter test... And working ALL of the word problems.... which hasn't been a problem... HOWEVER>>>> we are now in Chapter 7, Lesson 10... and there are 41 word problems....!!! So, if your dc have worked through this text... DID THEY COMPLETE ALL the word problems when there were THIS MANY? And if so.... HOW LONG did it take?!? And please HUMOR me and tell me you survived?!? lol
  9. Yeah... I saw your answer in that thread after I had already posted.................. thanks for sharing..........
  10. Ok, I'm officially sold on DIVE science, yet am unsure which textbook to use... I see they offer an Internet Textbook, which appears to be various links to read prior to each lesson. There are also recommendations for the BJU text, or Abeka... For those of you who have used DIVE... Did you strictly use the Internet Textbook or did you go with one of the others...?? And also, if you went with a different text, as in BJU or Abeka, did you use the DIVE tests or the corresponding text tests??
  11. I remember "way back" in high school a few tests were open book... I don't remember which ones... I just remember studying still and being prepared... but thankful it was open book as it was so much info. and it helped. I remember still having to be able to demonstrate my abilities and comprehension of the materials, etc... All that being said... we are using BJU Cultural Geography, and are enjoying it thus far. I have a couple of other Geographic encyclopedias to enhance our studies as we take rabbit trails, and are enjoying the Must See Places of the World DVDs along with our studies... However, at times, it is a TON of information... and sometimes I see ds getting overwhelmed preparing for the tests. I want him to enjoying it, and he is... but not dread the cram remembering sessions for the tests... Cramming facts to remember for a test and then forgetting is pointless to long term learning and enjoyment, to me at least... For those of you using BJU Cultural Geography, or if you are in a similar situation with something else... how are you handling it? are you doing open book tests? other methods? suggestions? TIA!
  12. It varies according to the topic / material covered in the lessons... Some lessons are completed in a reasonable time, yet lessons with word problems may take 2 - 3 days....
  13. Thanks Kathy in Richmond! I found Geobra today after a bit of searching.... I've downloaded it as well as the manual and videos.... Let's just say it's a learning curve, but I know it will be worth it.... Feel a bit frustrated as it's just one more thing to do and figure out...
  14. For those of you that have used this text... I'll start out by stating... We LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!! As I was looking through the next chapter, preparing lessons for the week, and watched the Math without Borders DVD... He used Geometers Sketchpad.... When I google that, it's now sold by McGraw Hill, and $70! What other options are there, other than the obvious pencil, paper and graph paper... which we will also use.... Are there any free apps that accomplish the same thing... drawing a rectangle and automatically calculating the distances, length and width and finding areas... Thanks!
  15. Hmmm... had ruled out the participation, because yes as homeschoolers that's an obvious given... Assignments... new learning... working towards mastery... So I had boiled it down to Chapter tests, semester tests and final... Had thought about adding in daily quiz... but why...? If he's doing the assignments, completing all the work and making corrections... a quiz could just turn into busy work, and we don't have time to waste... Off to ponder and reflect some more............
  16. Great suggestions overall, thank you! And as far as the bolded above... thanks for the chuckle... I needed that, it's been a long day!
