What would you do?
My 8th grade son has significant problems with spelling. This is not new. We've worked on it for many, many years. He has no reading problems. He reads difficult, long books without trouble (Lord of the Rings, Adventures of Huck Finn, everything by Orson Scott Card). We've tried All about Spelling, Spell to Write and Read, Logic of English, always with the phonics based emphasis. This last year we switched to Rod and Staff with an additional 15 minutes/day word drill on spelling city. That seemed to work better than anything and I saw significant improvement.
He was just placement tested for an English class at a local co-op and the evaluator had significant concerns about his spelling. She said it looked like he never learned phonics. This is not the case The reality is, he can spout off all the spelling rules and all the sounds of all the phonograms. He can decode just fine. His trouble seems to be with encoding--and especially if it is a freewrite (not for spelling class).
I had planned on doing Rod and Staff 8 this year with him (which has phonics, morpheme, and root work).
Now I'm wondering if I need to do something else or if really need to get him evaluated. He has no other problems except spelling. He's highly intelligent, advanced in reading, can diagram super complicated sentences, and can write with a great deal of style. He flew through Dolciani Algebra, and truthfully seems gifted in every other respect except spelling. Every time I've considered dyslexia, he didn't seem to fit the description. Am I missing something? Are there other learning disabilities this sounds like?

My daughter did Challenge A & B and then I moved her to Wilson Hill Academy. The have classes called The Great Conversations. They are amazing and live!! The self-paced Veritas press classes are great but for high school you really want them having conversations. Check Wilson Hill out. It it amazing. Bruce Etter, who is the teacher on VP self-paced Omnibus 1 & 3 is the headmaster and teaches some of the classes. In 9th grade my daughter took 3 classes, TGC1+4, Fundamentals of Academic Writing & Physics 1. In 10th grade she took TGC 4, Logic 2, Algebra 2, Honors Chemistry, and Spanish 1. Next year, she will take TGC 6, Rhetoric 1, Honors Pre-Calculus, AP Biology & Spanish 2. It is so much better than CC!!
Yes, we did almost exactly the same thing. Agree with this sentiment exactly.

It isn’t new for bookshark. We used about half of it last year. We thought we’d love it, but my kiddo ended up switching to BJU at semester. It may just be us. As much as sonlight appeals to us, we’ve tried it before and always drop it. This science oriented kid just didn’t find it challenging enough and wanted the feedback of tests. I have a complete set I’m getting ready to sell if you are interested.

What’s the quality of the new 7th science teaching? Clear? Does it have enough review?

Migrelief ... but try it daily for three weeks before giving up. Yes, I had tried Magnesium, b, and feverfew before trying it, but this combination cured a chronic daily migraine that never completely went away for many YEARS. Way better than Topamax. I still get migraines a couple times a month, but I can always get rid of them now with Excedrin Migraine. Oh, and low inflammation diet (very low carbs and dairy) helps, too.

My daughter is currently taking Honors Biology at WHA. The class is fantastic! We are currently using the Miller Levine text and bought various lab supplies from Home Science Tools. The teacher is very knowledgeable and approachable. I highly suggest contacting the teacher for more info. Mowens@wilsonhillacademy.com

Any feedback for Mr. Vierra? I didn't think he was an option for Rhetoric because his section conflicted with Russian 2, but now we're considering doing Russian at the community college.

Have you seen the booklists for the GC classes? They are extensive and difficult! To read and prep to teach these in a way that is meaningful and appropriate is not an easy task. Plus, there are weekly forum writing posts they need to grade and at least quarterly long essays to grade. Plus, the Omnibus Teachers we've had are HIGHLY qualified and this is their income. I'm good with the price.

Thanks, everyone! We'll try to read through the Socratic Logic book over the summer if we can. I feel better about it now!

Anyone have a child in Rhetoric with Mr. Baker? Thoughts? My daughter will have gone through Fallacy Detective, Introductory Logic and Intermediate Logic. That’s the equivilent of Logic 1 at WHA. They are supposed to have Logic 2 or permission from the instructor. We got permission since she’ll be a Junior and won’t be able to take Rhetoric 2 (senior thesis) without it, but will this class be crazy difficult without Logic 2?

It looks like the accreditation will be through ACCS, which accredits very reputable classical schools, but yeah... the price increase is hard to swallow.. https://classicalchristian.org/

How about Bob Jones DLO? It’s daily and graded. There’s an online special right now for $99/year, but that’s for one year. However, there are great discounts at conferences.

Received! Thank you!

Anyone? Pretty please? Her teacher only has teacher book. He gave an extension until tonight. We got someone to send a photo, but the resolution made it unreadable. We overnighted another copy of the book, but it was delayed until tomorrow.

Mr Donaldson teaches both sections of Russian, not Mr Etter. My daughter is currently taking Russian I from him. She likes it.

We’ve loved it. My spelling challenged kid has been doing very well with this program. I assign one section and 15 min spelling city practice per day. Spelling is finally clicking after years of all kinds of OG programs. Who would have guessed? Roots/suffixes/prefixes...

We've loved the Great Conversations classes at Wilson Hill. My daughter has taken GC1+4 (Etter) and 5 (Martin). Fantastic depth and discussion. She's loved most of the classes she's taken there. She started in 9th, though. I can't comment on middle school classes.

My non-math loving daughter did great with WHA geometry last year, but there was a learning curve. First, the discussion boards don't require knowledge. Your student is encouraged to post which problems they are struggling with for others to help with. Some kids are reluctant to do that at first, but it really can be helpful. The text also has an explanation of the ideas in the chapter. I wouldn't give up, but persevere if possible. Try to get in a math lesson daily. Once they get past the humps, they feel so accomplished!

I'm doing individual meeting times with multiple kids, too. R&S English and spelling (with spelling city added). I've combined before, but I feel it really goes better with individual books. I usually have them do their independent reading while waiting their turns.

My daughter didn't use it in Geometry or in Chemistry (where it was also recommended). I don't think she ever got the hang of it and used a scratch pad on her computer. We bought the one they recommended, Wacom (not Bamboo).

As a Chem teacher, I think time is better spent memorizing top element symbols and common ions than on memorizing weights. Those come easily enough by looking them up all the time. Search (common ions) and start with a group of 20-25 (enough to start).

So if my kid says he absolutely can’t visualize a word—imagine it is written on a page or a board, what would you suspect?
