  1. In answer to Song School Latin being too easy for a second grader. It is easy, but that also makes it painless. You don't need the TM, just get the book and the cd.... uhm unless the cd comes in the teacher's manual,

If so, and you are wanting to watch your money, maybe get just the TM and write out the exercises.

We are going from SSL to Minimus. SSL is too easy for my rising 4th grader, He's wanting to go faster. but we are going to split up and let him finish SSL at his own pace, then start on Minimus.

I found a good deal on Minimus used or I would have gone to Lively Latin. We are doing classical pronounciation, even though we had to get used to the idea of " Yooleas Keezer. saying "weenee, weedee weekie" We still crack up at that.

  2. That is SO not the way to spell that. sorry

But I think answer that question first.

We are just starting out in Latin and needed to decidewhich direction we were going and why we were taking Latin.

So, I suggest you make your decision between C or E first, that will help you narrow which curricula work.

  3. I was a performing storyteller in a previous life and loved doing prep and research in diners. I liked the buzz around me and to be able to drink coffee while I worked....coffee that I didn't have to make :-)

I have read that that's a learning style thing. Some people work well with a bit of back ground energy/noise and some folks need it absolutely quiet.

If I'm going to be out, I want snacks. :)

but the library has worked for us too.

Sometimes I'm just sick of the house. Yesterday the kids wanted to work at the kitchen table. and our back deck is a favorite place.. but I still have to make the coffee.

  4. This has been very helpful because we are going too slowly for my 8 yo through SSL. I'm ready for him to jump into Minumus,

my 6 yold may stay in SSL and 8 yo go on to Minumus. ick, two different things at a time.

I am thinking Lively Latin after Minimus, any thoughts?

Would y'all do Minimus Secundus or on to LFC . or LL ?

  5. My 6 year old is reading the Fairy Realm books by Rodda at one sitting, and is working through Nancy Drew books, in a few days.

Can somebody point me to some well written literature for little ones.

She zooms though Tree House and A2Z mysteries. They have qualities that I like, but I'm wondering about some really well-written books.

    Any sources of lists?

    Suggestions?

    TIA

  6. A friend is a long time, 2nd grade teacher and she wishes she had more time for her kids to write. She suggested Evan-Moor Paragraphs. We have really liked using it. The one I have is grade 2-4 . Starts with topic and supporting sentences then covers many types of paragraphs. We're finding it easy yet thorough. We haven't finished yet, so even though I plan to start CW Aesop B with him, I may be using it next year with my then 4th grader.

I always like to look at stuff before I buy it. You should be able to get your hands on one if you are near a traditional teacher supply store.

    good luck.

  7. Right Start is considered scripted , but it works for us.

The problem I had with Writing Strands is when my childnre gave different, but correct anwers.

I really like the thought that scripted might be good when you are not experienced ina subject, but cumbersome if you are confident. I think that's where I am with Right Start and WS.

  8. I use a standard, blank, academic year planner from the office supply store, I draw lines to divide the horizontal spaces into enough lines for all our subjects. It is a week at a glance, and I alternate pages between teh two kids. I have only two, If I had another I think I might get a different color planner for each child.

I use teeny stickers to mark what we've finished right on the planning sheet.

It is working for us. I to want to write on something.

  9. Hi,

I fold the gasket forward and wipe it with a clorox wipe.

But I was using WAY too much detergent.

I noticed on teh box that it touted 48 loads,, details were that the appropriate measue was a tablespoon ( or so) yet the enclosed meausing thingy was in cups.

    sneaky sneaky...

So, I got an old tablespoon measure and we use that now.

So many times, we don't really need detergent. or just the teeniest bit.

And I'll wash an occasional load with bleach and thta has seemed to do the trick.

  10. Remember all the time spent in testing prep and taking. SATs take up lots of time in our public schools here.

You were so smart about the math prep.

How about getting a couple of maps of new location? Just for them to look at and check out, NOT to add more work for you.

And netflix. Put only educational stuff in the queue and let them at it. I sometimes have back pain and there are days when we do only math and maybe spelling and then they can watch something educational , and they just play..

And a move across the country is a huge life change. I think they must be feeling upheaval too. I think take it easy and be as relaxed as possible during this time. When they look back on this move, they can have confidence that this kind of life change isn't the end of the world. That this is " no big deal" might be better from them than any specific facts they pick up during this 6 week period.

NOW: for the diclaimer, I have a 6 and an 8 year old, and I'd be freaking out too. So, I'm glad you wrote. I think in the " big picture" you and yours will be so fine.

    Safe home.
