  1. Blew our minds for a while. But then it clicked. and was very useful.

I augment RS with Evan Moor word problems and for more multiplication practice, I even did the Math Mammoth mulitiplying section, for my 9 year old we are also using LOF. My daughter loves workbooks so I get those for her. I do thinkk becareful introducing mulitpale methodologies from multiple prgrams, but math actvities and living math books are a great way to change the pace.

Abacus: One of mine loves the abacus and grabs it whenever she is stuck, the other ,, dispised it, so I bought a full set of place value cubes and we worked with those, (They are , by the way , my all-time favorite math manipuylative. )

If she wants to use the abacus,, I think let her and keep playing.

I have left RS and returned several times..both mine can now add double digits in their head and really like to work things out. Going in Level B gets REAL slow play some more games, and review the 2 5s trick , play some games,, review a bit,,,

I know what you mean about trying a program that everyone loves that just doesn't work for you... Singapore is like that at our house. I just wasn't willing to work it all out ahead of time,,, just didn't happen,

    good luck.

  2. And trust it.

With the placement test, the student starts every year where they TEST , not at some random " beginning second grade" word list. I like that.

oh , If you are a conservative Christian, the sentences may fit you well, if not, you may want to make up your own. Take a look at them. The writer definately has an agenda. I just fix the sentences and and appreciate all her hard work on the other bits.

  3. But the saying " the child, not the curriculum " comes to mind.

I've used RS and other stuff, we keep coming back to RS.

You may want to look at Transition Lessons and then go to D, but she will probably fly through some of it and slow way down in other parts where teh methodology is new.

Call Right Start and they can probably help you with what level,

Another platitude: What we need is what we need.

Regardless of what's on the cover of the book.

    Good luck.

  4. I look at the sample and that style of pretending that the viewer has answered, ala Dora the Explorer, will make me insane. sample:

"Look at the equation, can you see anything different about this equation?...

    Exactly two different place holders"

I love RS and want to continue with Dr. Cotter's recommendations, but that patronizing style will never fly at our house. Is there anything else out there?

  5. I LOVE WWE.

But I'm a bit stuck on dication, my 9 year old is finishing WWE-2. Pre WWE, he spontaneously composed multi-chapter fictional stories and typed them. He loves words and he likes to write,, but when it comes to dictation, he gets the gyst of the quote but often changes an article or another small thing.

He nor I are visual , I talked to him about visualizing the sentence. "The puppy ran up the road" . He and I both " saw" the puppy, not the written sentence.

SO..... do I hold him to the verbatim copying,, and if so, why? Do I hang in for 6 more lessons of WWE-2 or should we go on to WWE-3 . We did lesson 36 and he wrote " on the sea" rather than " in the sea" ,,, or something like that, a prepostion was changed.

I guess, I want help adapting WWE for a verbal kid rather than a visual kid. Or convincing that the verbatim details are worth the work.

    TIA,

  6. Please.

Can someone tell me what pingo means?

I am using Minimus and there is an exercise in the teachers resource book. I can't find the verb " pingo" anywhere in the materials and we are supposed to translate with the correct endings.

    TIA,

  7. DD7,DS9 now

Secular and Classical pronounciation are preferences here so we do Minimus for fun with some writing of " words to remember" and working the " Grasp the grammar" portions. We are also moving through Getting Started with Latin.

We did SSL, but I was concerned with no macrons ( It is my ignorance that is making me so careful.... uh,, paranoid?) After this thread, I think I'll go back to SSL for the songs, and keep on with the other two.

I'm not sure about Minimus Secundus, maybe look some more for the mini books, and next year ( 8 and 10 years old, go on to a more formal stuff with So you really want to learn Latin... ( I just hope they do)

    good luck.

  8. We were given ( lucky us) stap on dvd players for the car, we only use them when we travel, but they have been amazing. That and a Netflix account and we have covered lots of good PBS Documentaries and Science kind of dvds. I use Story of the World and I'm able to suppliment with appropriate movies.

Again we only use them " on the road' and not about town.

I know this is an expensive suggestion, but we have had and used ours for 4 years and it's been a great piece of educational equipment. ( A day without a good rationalization is a day wasted ;))

Good luck with the therapy too. :)
