  1. Love the sage color - I'm sure I'll add that to my collection.

I'm wondering if it is certain colors that are prone to scratches.  My cobalt blue has some scratches, but I've had my dishes for several years.  I read in other thread about Fiestaware that Bar Keepers Friend will help with the scratches.  I would never take the time to put paper plates inbetween my plates - way too time consuming.

  2. I think this sounds yummy, and would appreciate that you are trying to fix something healthy.  I think if people are that picky, they should pack their own lunch.  Personally, I think a salad with a variety of toppings (including a protein like hard boiled eggs and cooked chicken) would be easy to fix and people could pick and choose what they want.

  3. Is the ultimate stress eating when you eat your kid's leftover breakfast?  One and a half pieces of peanut butter cinnamon raisin toast called out to me.  I justified it by saying to myself, "Well, it is gluten free and she wouldn't want cold toast when she got back from school in 2 hours, and there is more bread in the freezer."

SWB, caring for a loved one after surgery for at least the first week gives you a free pass to stress eat.  At least you are getting exercise with the stairs!

  4. I think we have 13 different colors:  cobalt, lapis, peacock, turquoise, sunflower, marigold, tangerine, shamrock, lemongrass, plum, scarlet, paprika, and ivory.  I thought I would like the ivory as a neutral, but it is so boring compared to the colors.  I did get the ivory mug that has the Christmas tree on it so that adds some color.  I love seeing the different color combinations on our table.  When we have a lot of company, it's fun for people to pick their favorite color.  I don't like pink, so I won't get the flamingo, and I probably won't get the black or white.  My current favorite color of the bunch is lapis.

  5. The bowls are kind of a pain in any dishwasher.  But we have a Miele and I swear that has the best designed interior of a dishwasher for max capacity.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll look at a Miele and compare it to the Bosche.  They both seem to get good reviews here.  Anything you don't like about the Miele . . . something that bugs you or wish it had or did?

I'm trying to do my research up front before my eyes glaze over at the appliance store!

  6. We have a Maytag and my Fiesta fits fine. It never occurred to me to check if it would fit when we bought a new dishwasher.

We have a Maytag now (10 years old?) and yes they fit fine.  When I was reading reviews, I thought I read that the Bosch had tines close together and fit Corelle dinnerware best because the plates are thinner.

  7. They fit in my kitchen sink just fine  ;)  (not exactly helpful, I know, but I couldn't resist).

  I know what you mean.  When we realized the dishwasher wasn't working, I had to empty it out and wash all by hand.  It took me less than 30 minutes to wash.  I let them drip dry about 30 minutes and then they easily wiped dry and were put away in less than 15 minutes.  That was less time than using the dishwasher!

  8. If you use Fiestaware, what kind of dishwasher do you have?

Our dishwasher just went out, so we'll be needing a new one soon.  Instead of lugging my dishes to the appliance store, I thought I'd ask the wonderful WTM ladies here what dishwasher they use that fits their Fiestaware best.  We use the dinner plates, small plates, cereal bowls, fruit bowls, and mugs regularly.

    Thank you!

  9. The thank you note is unnecessary, but it is a nice way of ending the drama.  Somehow putting it is writing so the grandmother can read it over and over and get it in her head that the trip isn't going to happen might be just what is needed.  I would make sure the thank you note is appreciative of grandma thinking of her and making the effort to plan the trip, however, give all the reasons she can't go - her schedule is too full this summer, it isn't a destination she would want grandma to spend money on, and she would feel more comfortable with a family trip that included her parents.

  10. It takes about an hour and 15 minutes to get to MIL's house, and when DH goes, he's gone for 6-7 hours (getting home around 11 at night, so we've already had a full day here, often including an outside class), including travel time. At MIL's house, they have dinner and then just hang around the apartment talking and doing nothing much. He goes every other week, with the occasional three-week interval depending on what's going on at the time. He takes both kids, and I go when there's a special occasion or when I've missed 3-4 visits. He doesn't like it and thinks I should be with him, but this is the ONLY time I get to myself ever, and I usually need it for cleaning or doing my paid work, so I've taken a hard stand on that.

I think your dd is seeing that you don't have to go, so why should she?  Especially if she is an introvert like you.  I think you need to set an example and go too (even your dh wants you to go) and compromise by going once a month.  When you miss 3-4 visits, that's' every two months.  So your question was "How hard would you push on making her go to Grandma's house?"  My answer would be to encourage you to go more frequently and then she could go less frequently.  I wish my children still had their grandparents to visit.

  11.  The other thing that news segment told us was that you shouldn't wash off your dishes first because the washer needs the food particles to clean them, which, really sounded very odd to me.

When I had a dishwasher repairman out once, he was so surprised how clean the trap was in the bottom of my dishwasher.  Yeah, because I don't use it as a garbage disposal.  He did suggest putting a little cooking oil in the dishwasher before running the load.  (Huh?)

The last time I went looking for a dishwasher, the salesmen would tell me I shouldn't clean the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher - that it needed to sense the food so it would keep cleaning.  Then I discovered the shortest wash cycle was over 2 hours.  My short cycle is 85 minutes - and that includes 30 mins. for drying.  Doesn't make sense to me. Elbow grease goes a long way.

  12. Fiestaware owner here.  The bowls (cereal and fruit), mugs, and sometimes salad plates go on the top.  Dinner plates go on the bottom.  It all depends how much I have to wash.

People aren't going to like this, but I rinse my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.  I don't like using my dishwasher as a garbage disposal.  I also don't like taking the time to load the dishwasher with food stuck on it, wait the 2 hours for the machine to "wash" and dry them, and then find dishes didn't get clean.  Nothing makes me happier than a clean, sanitized load of Fiestaware coming out of the dishwasher (except when one of the kids puts them away for me!).

  13. I love my scale (not the weight it is showing!) but I love the features on my scale.  It is a Tanita HD-351.  It's digital and has a memory. It has 5 buttons on the front/side that you can hit with your toe - each one in our family has our own button, but mostly just dh and I weigh.  It will show your current weight and your previous weight.  I think you can get it at Amazon.  So easy to use.  I keep mine propped up behind the bathroom door and just lay it flat when I use it.  Very accurate.
