  1. What great ideas already!  My suggestion is along the lines of thinking outside-the-box, as already mentioned previously.

Consider a different location.  Just because she lives in Northern MD doesn't mean the wedding can't be elsewhere (consider beach, DC on the lawn?, mountains, lakes, waterfalls, vineyards if the leaves haven't died yet, etc).  If they choose a natural outdoor place they will likely be able to get a cheap marriage on site.  For instance, pretty far away, but there are plenty of people who do cheap weddings at Niagara Falls.  The guests all go to a small chapel house for beginning ceremony, then go to the Falls and stand for the 10 min of actual vows taken, and that's it.  Then you can have a reception maybe somewhere close by.  But if she focuses on natural things nearby like parks, a lot of ideas mentioned could be used outside (high tea, natural decorations, etc).

If she tries to plan during high-foliage season that would even be better, because what better backdrop than fall leaves?  Or she could try to marry a little later, go to the mountains, and have a nice winter snow scene.  Of course none of these are churches, so that's her personal decision.

I also did my own invites, bought a dress at a place that was geared toward proms I think, but they had ivory embroidered dresses which was perfect for what I wanted.  We did not get an engagement ring, and we have bland wedding bands.  We bought flowers that morning and I made a flower tiara and my veil, as well as buying vases for the restaurant tables and just putting pretty roses from the grocery store there (cheaper than a flower outlet that I found).  Buy and bring wine/champagne for the reception.  I understand the desire to just go to a place and have it all done for you, but they are expensive.

  2. I'm curious if anyone has tips for migraines that are not so well known and help them?

I tend to just bulk up on OTC meds, lay low, and make sure I'm cool. Those help me not feel worse but don't take away the pain.

Today I'm wondering if I should work out, a totally contradictory move for me. I think I would feel lousy during it but wonder if I may feel better afterwards with all that good blood flow/hormonal response.

I also need to start taking prescription meds honestly. But in the meantime, any tips?

  3. I think that assignment is totally open to a literal answer from a child who would naturally answer it that way. The imagination about the life of a British royal (not just the reigning Queen, but there are other very interesting options) is just as creative as anything else.

    :iagree:

I think if he wants/thinks to interpret it literally, why not?  There are royalty figures that are not very popular or well known, so they could be chosen.  Or even more literally "to be a king", he could focus on princes and discuss what it really takes to be a King and what life is like for him in modern times.  Is it really a life focused on etiquette and social placement or does he spend the majority of time with friends doing things peers do too?

    That's what I'd do, FWIW.

  4. Low expectations for today:

Transportation for science camp  -- Done!

New shoes for DC -- probably will have to wait until tomorrow as I still need groceries... -- Not going to happen anytime soon.

Meet up with BFF -- Done!

Try best to eat healthy (will be eating one meal out and no groceries at home because I didn't do it yesterday) -- Nope, pizza for dinner

    Grocery/bulk grocery shopping -- nope

New shirts/shorts for DC (turned off of ebay after receiving a huge box of smoke infused clothing; will try to get larger sizes for future at garage sales) -- probably will have to wait until tomorrow as I still need groceries... -- not going to happen anytime soon.

Perhaps cut own hair -- Did research, awaiting order in mail to cut by self

    Have a great day!

ETA -- forgot to add: HWT, reading, and sight words study. -- Did HWT, no others

Developed a migraine in the afternoon after coming home from science camp.  Rest of the day was and is a wash.  Will probably be on survival mode for the next 3 days.  On the plus side, figured out why one DC has been so fussy.  It's from teething.

  5. Good article. I would think logic games might do something but the few times I did the luminosity app it seems like it was just fast speed reaction. I need to check out the website too.

Playing video games may be even better according to the article? Awesome!

  6. I'm curious if luminosity actually improves brain function or just makes you better at their games?

Does it seem to help you away from the game (actual recall/focus/etc) if you use it? If so, when did you notice a difference?

Are there independent studies supporting it?

Are there other/better programs? Should I just take fake IQ tests for fun but less interaction?

I'm on my phone and can't do much research about it and I'm curious.

  7. Nothing new under the sun, but I love eggs/omelets/frittatas. Can be customized per person/ family with lots of veggies. Don't forget it can be a breakfast for dinner option.

Along those lines, egg salad, either with a plate of lettuce/salad, or in a sandwich.

Quesadillas can be made veggie easily.

    Black beans and rice

    Vege burgers!

    Baked ziti w/ vege fillings/sauce

    Snacks: cottage cheese with fruit

    Yogurt with fruit and oatmeal/granola

    Fruit smoothies

Vege fruit muffins (zucchini, pumpkin, apple, banana)

Gosh I'm so hungry I have to stop helping...

ETA. Mine aren't really recipes but just ideas, obviously.

  8. I hope you aren't sick :(. I felt a little sniffly and hope it's just allergies.

    Science camp transport. - done!

    Workout - done!

Return items at retail store - done!

    Buy/browse a few items there - done!

Buy regular or bulk groceries depending on family mood- hmmm... We'll see... -- nope not going to happen.

    PT consult - done

Listen to SOTW and figure out where we left off - done, yea!

    Make dental appt - done!

Stretch goals -- make a healthy dinner and clean kids bathroom - ummm... We'll see... Had a healthy dinner! Good enough!

It feels so good and different to have my to do list public like this. Makes me feel accountable and I love it! :)

Extra credit- did luminosity for fun. Does that count for cleaning the bathroom? Also spent 1-2 hours getting DC to sleep. Does that mean I don't need groceries now? Haha

You may appreciate mrmoneymustache.com as well, if you read bogleheads and ERE.  He reached FIRE about 35 y/o or so, and now works just doing whatever he wants.

I found him after someone linked him through ERE (which was a little too extreme for me at the time).

  10. Take my advice with a grain of salt, but I'd recommend a regular one cup coffee brewer instead.  They're much cheaper, can brew directly into a travel mug (tall opening), and cost $20-25.  They're not as "cool", but because they're inexpensive there's also less worry about it getting broke in college.  IMO they also allow a stronger brew because you can get a lot more coffee grounds into them.  I had one similar to the Black N Decker Brew N Go personal coffeemaker on amazon.  I really liked it, much better than my Keurig.

With Keurig and the re-usable filter cups, there's just as much "work" as a one cup coffee brewer, so there's no time or effort saver.  And the disposables are WAY too expensive for me.  I also, like PP, got used to it after time.  I honestly liked the other types better.  They're smaller, quicker, easier for the grounds to clean out, etc.

For other coffee ideas, consider a French press (just add hot water but difficult to clean IMO), or a drip filter that you just place on top of a cup and add hot water to and it works by gravity.

Congrats on her going to college!

  11. Oh no wonder! I told DH why wouldn't there be a parking garage here? They really need it!

Seems like I am so intuitive :)

I bet I'll have to pay to park in a garage next time. We usually have gone there for lunch or dinner but I guess some people hang out there as its own attraction. It's neat and fun but we aren't big shoppers so we just look around. Going into stores is too tempting! Until the family saw the ghiraradelli (sp?) place. Oh boy! That was a mistake.

  12. If you have a smart phone you could get a "to do list" app. I have one called errands. I can create lists in many categories I made up. Some examples I use mine for: lists of books/DVDs I want to check out from library, lists of things to pack for travel, things to buy, gift wish lists for family, new music I want, etc. but it doesn't have to be just a to do lost.

Maybe you can have categories like project 1, 2, 3 ( with specific titles). Or something? Problem is you would be note taking on a phone which can be cumbersome if your notes are long, and the need to visually check it so you don't forget you have it there. I'm not sure if that would help in your specific situation or not.

Prudent homemaker-- sweet family focusing on being financially... prudent   www.theprudenthomemakerblog.blogspot.com

Engrish -- probably politically incorrect but some things are just sooo funny (not really a blog but daily pics)   www.engrish.com

Patrick Rothfuss -- I've eagerly awaited news for the release of his third novel in a trilogy for too long. Still waiting...   www.patrickrothfuss.com

    Do you have any?

ETA -- I thought websites may be helpful.  :001_smile:

  14. A PCP can check basic stuff (thyroid, etc), and will likely do so if you mention your specific symptoms.

If you're interested in a full hormonal (female hormones and male hormones) panel the only way to go is a reproductive endocrinologist IME (infertility doctor). Likely only located in your closest big city.

I'd say have an internal medicine doctor at least screen for basic stuff when you say your symptoms, then try further stuff if that's all normal? As a benefit, some PCPs in remote locations will order more testing/bloodwork on request so maybe a little research with what you specifically want tested and a request may go a long way. Endocrinologist would also be good but may miss "non hormonal" causes of your symptoms? Also be prepared to answer specifics to him/her about what you are experiencing. I think they may not know what to do medically with a broad description. For instance, mention if you are forgetful, tired, sad, have decreased attention, or whatever is happening. Hope you feel better !

  15. I should clarify that I haven't been to MK since I was very young, 4-ish. I remember a few things: 1) I was on the teacup and it went way too fast and whoever went with me spun it and I was scared. 2) I was too short to ride the rides I wanted and had to sit out on a lot of things. 3) we didn't get to see the castle up close.

I went to Epcot and universal studios as "recently" as a young teenager with school. And we brought DS as an infant to animal kingdom and islands of adventure.

We've been to a lot of other amusement/theme parks here and in other states which I understand is not the same as MK. Until recently DC have been so young that the majority of my time at places like that I just feel stressed in a million ways and see it as an expensive day. Recently I've started to enjoy them in general and am looking forward to a visit to all the WDW parks!

  16. They just contracted with HBO too so have some shows (not all though, like NO game of thrones).  Honestly, I know everyone loves the prime shipping but for me it really isn't 2 day shipping most times.  I tend to order at wacky times like sat evenings, and get stuff on Wednesday.  No biggie because I pre-plan a lot of purchases and don't usually need them immediately, but the speed isn't really great for me.  IDK if the shipping is much slower than that for normal purchases (I also don't buy a small item at a time but try to bundle purchases anyway).  Also a lot of my purchases don't fall under prime shipping so they don't qualify anyway.

For kids they have a ton of Veggie Tales if you are into them.
