  1. We went through AAS level 3 before switching to Rod and Staff 4- this was with a natural speller who didn't need the one on one teaching.

For my beginning speller and struggling speller we have stuck with AAS as they both need the more and holding, parent intensive approach.  I add in things here to help with retention and use beyond the lessons.  We also do not use the tiles at all.  I typically allow them to choose how to write the words and since they prefer writing, I made worksheets to go along with the steps.  I also have them color code the words, use them in sentences of their own, etc to help them remember the words.  Each day we do go through the rules learned that they haven't mastered yet.  It does take time as I also have one using AAR, but I can see their confidence and spelling improved (thinking mainly of my struggling speller.)

  2. We haven't dropped it, but there are things that I don't like about it and change.

I don't like the tiles and neither do my kids- we don't use them at all.

We don't use the review cards (probably should)

It's expensive- We don't buy the review cards to save on this

I want applied work like Rod and Staff has to show more understanding

I want it to be more fun hands on.  Even the silly games that AAR has my kids love and look forward to

Parent intensive- but at the same time the kids I use it with need that, so....

  3. Our Walmart does it too and it is so nice! They don't always have everything I want, but typically the majority so if I need to run to the grocery store for a couple of things no big deal. It's 5-10 minutes vs hours. And the added bonus of Walmart is that I can do other items too so I throw in the shampoo, toothpaste and such. It makes it so much easier.

  4. We are a family of 6 soon to be 7. At one point we had 12 settings, but over the years it's dwindled. I think we are down to 1 bowl, 10 soup bowels, 10 dinner and salad (the smaller plates). We have since added different bowls for daily use and have 12 of those. The plates are getting worn so we will most likely get more in the near future. I want at least 14-16 plates, but not entire place settings. We only use the large dinner plates when guest come over and then daily the smaller plates. We don't use the other bowls, so we'd go without those as well.

  5. What we do each day is review the rules we've learned already. That refreshes in DS mind what they are. Then we do the review part of the lesson, learn new lesson and work again on reviewing words as needed. The second day we do the phrases and sentences which already incorporate review of past words. If he gets something wrong I remind him of the rule or ask him to try again. This is for my struggling speller at 10 and my more natural speller at 5.

Try different ways for practicing spelling- writing on paper, tiles, out loud. One way may help him remember better.

  6. I have an ADHD child (currently unmedicated) who is struggling during co-op. There's a lack of attention/focus, talking when not allow d to and some impulsive behavior. We are currently working with our doctors to make a plan for better helping, but for now any ideas of how to help with these issues.

  7. Although I'm not sure I would do it, I don't find it odd.  Changing diapers in most bathrooms is difficult and pull ups in my experience are tough too.  It was probably quicker and less stressful for her to do it this way.  Perhaps she should have been more discrete about it, but as described it doesn't sound bad.  After having spent this summer travelling via airports several times with my kids, if they were younger, I'd probably resort to this too, even with two adults present..

  8. I got mine today and the stylist for the most part got what I was looking for.  It was a maternity box, but I asked for things that I could use afterwards, layers, warm and things to use for pictures and holidays.  The only thing I didn't really feel I got was the pictures/holidays.  But everything except for one can be used after pregnancy.

Andrew Marc Performance Elly Puffer Vest- ($98)  This was by far my favorite item, but also something I would have chosen for myself anyway.  It's olive green, down filled (but thin), has a cute stripped print on the inside of the hood.  It's more than I would normally have spent on an item like this, but if I end up keeping everything, it's not too bad.

Olive & Oak Riddle Two Pocket Top- ($58) I have looked for a warm flannel shirt that doesn't look too much like those I wore in my grunge phase.  This is nice and feminine, comfy and a great everyday look.  The only bummer about it is that with my belly it's short in the front and won't be buttoned long.  But it will look ok with a shirt underneath and definitely be something I can wear after baby.

Tinsel Chapleen Cargo Jacket- ($88)  This is a fun coat and I've looked at these in the store before, but just never gotten one.  The only thing that makes me pause about this is the color since it's burnt orange.  I'm more of a plain jane girl, so this is a bit out of my comfort zone.  Still I'll probably end up keeping it to add something different to my wardrobe and try something new.

Fate Leyton Colorblock Open Cardigan- ($68)  This is something I wouldn't have tried on my own, but I kind of like it.  DH also seems to like that way it looks on me.  It's warmer poncho sweater and a nice grey, black and white and I can see myself pairing it with a few of the things I already own.  If I didn't already like the majority of the other items in the box, I'd probably send this one back, but I'll probably give it a try for something different- which is why I tried stitch fix again.

Market & Spruce Alma Long Sleeve Maternity Knit Top- ($44)  This is the only actual maternity item I received.  I really like this as I've been having a tough time finding clothes I like. It's a plain dark grey thin sweater like material.  It pairs well the vest, jacket and cardigan too.

I think I'm going to end up keeping the entire box.  With discount it's $247 ($356-25% and $20).  I'll still end up needing to supplement with a few things I find elsewhere for pictures, holidays and the next few months until this little one arrives.  But overall since I can continue using most of these for awhile, I feel its worth it.

  9. Such a bummer that it didn't all work out. All this talk of stitch fix on these boards has made me decide to get another. I had a few good boxes last year but being pregnant I stopped. I need some nice stuff for the holidays and pictures so here's to hoping I'll get a good one. In the past I've been pleasantly surprised.

  10. Sometimes there are kids who find spelling easier than reading, especially with the early words in AAS. When you get into more of the visual patterns, you might see some issues if his reading hasn't caught up by then. Reading provides a lot of visual reinforcement for those types of patterns. For those kids who do find AAS easier, usually somewhere in levels 2-4 you'll see reading pulling ahead again (which makes sense because there are more spelling levels, and spelling does get more complicated for longer words.) By doing the programs separately, you can take each one at your son's pace. Have fun! Good for you for following your little one's interests!

Thanks! I am wondering as he goes into AAS 2 if it'll slow down significantly. He's only been at it a month and is almost done with level 1 (in the same time he's about Half way through AAR level 1, so not too far apart). He may just be a natural speller like one of his brothers.

  11. I actually just talked to my doctor about this today and she said since all has been well in this and my previous pregnancies there's no need to come as often. So as of now she's ok with stretching appointments out...yea! No appointments every two weeks! And that helps since I hate having to find child care for my other 4 and she said if anything feels wrong or I want to come more often she can get me in that day and well reassess. For my others I did go regularly as told, but I will say my doctors then were less willing to work with me and my wants/needs.

  12. Has anyone used the Epcot passport kit they sell?

We got the passport kit last time we were there. It's nothing special but the kids liked stopping to get them stamped. The cast members when would usually sign it too saying something in the native language of that country. They really liked that. Then there were the stickers to put for each country. It was at the same place as the kidcot stops.

  13. Actually, reading was historically taught through spelling with Webster's Blue Backed Speller or other Spellers. In the preface to Parker's first reader, there is a warning against allowing a student to read a word they cannot spell:

Here is the link with his full introduction to the reader and a picture of the cover of the book:

    http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Spelling/spelling1851.html

I allowed my children to progress in reading past what they can spell, but found that working on spelling during phonics only helped the process, enhancing the learning and speeding the process.

I also found that they could both spell words before they could blend, and that working on spelling before reading helped them learn to read those words easier.

This is reassuring as I've only done it the other way around. I guess I have noticed it's helped him with the reading process much quicker. I'll just keep letting him go at his own pace for each.

  14. I typically don't begin teaching spelling until my child is through AAR level 1 (as they suggest), but 5 yo DS request he learn so he could write like his brothers. I figured he'd want to stop after simple cvc type of words, but he loves it and is excelling. Because spelling moves more quickly than reading lessons, is there any harm at having him continue with spelling with it bypasses reading?

  15. Depending on what you want to spend, I would give my DS and his fiancé a picture frame and an engagement photo session paid for. But then I'm one for pictures and memories and so are my kids.

my best friends parents gave us a very nice picture frame for our engagement that I treasured and put engagement pictures in and then later our wedding picture. It was a nice keepsake.

  16. My only suggestion would be to talk to the mom. I know you said you aren't friends, but she may just be having a difficult time dealing with her child and unsure of what to do. She may just need some grace, a friend to listen, someone to understand. She may be horrified by his behavior. She may be assuming it's stopped since you haven't brought it up again. I know that this is a tough situation for your family, but personally I feel like ignoring and not addressing the issue (by either just stopping the help or not saying anything) isn't a help to the boy or his mom or even your family.
