  1. My nephew lives in an inner city neighborhood.  During recent heatwave, he decided to go outside to sleep on his porch.  He awakened to being bitten by raccoon - three times.  Many rabies shots later, he also no longer thinks they are cute.  I only think they are cute on TV.

How much driving does it take to charge the hybrid battery?

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond because I haven't been around much.  The hybrid battery is in a constant state of charging.  You never have to wait for it to charge.  The gas engine charges battery while it is running so when you are driving it just cycles between gas engine and battery.  Our gas mileage is great.  We own two hybrid vehicles and never plan to go back to a non-hybrid.

  3. I am a Toyota person and have never enjoyed driving Hondas.  If she is a Toyota person, I would keep that in mind.  Also, I have an older Highlander Hybrid and LOVE it.  With a hybrid, nothing has to be plugged in.  The gas part of the engine charges the battery.   I am not interested in ever straying from Toyota again.

  4. My daughter has a very hard time letting go of some things and is completely opposed to just donating her things to a thrift store.  However, if I can come up with a charity or something with more of a specific purpose, she is better about it.  For instance, she feels better about donating things to the homeless shelter and currently survivors of a devastating tornado in our area.  Then, she feels that she knows more of where her things are going and can feel better about their new purpose.  Just a suggestion.  I have a MIL and DH very much like this so I feel your pain.  It even has me second guessing what to get rid of nowadays.

  5. My favorite topic.  Just recently saw Waitress.  It is now in my top 10 musicals.  I loved it   Another favorite is Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.   This is probably the one I actually listen to the most often.

    Others include:

    Little Shop of Horrors

    Jesus Christ Superstar

    American Idiot

    Chess

    In the Heights

    Chicago

    An American in Paris

    Bright Star

    City of Angels

    Finding Neverland

Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder

    The Lion King

    Dogfight

    The Color Purple

    Something Rotten

Also, I haven't actually seen these yet but love the music for Come from Away and Hadestown.

While not one of my favorites personally, the tour currently out there of The King and I is one of the most visually stunning things I have seen in a long time.  It was a very good show.  I am sure I am missing something.  My 15 year old's new favorite is Waitress and my 17 year old's favorite is Les Miserables.   The tour of that currently going around is absolutely amazing.

  6. All is well here.  I live in city of Dayton and we had no damage.  We were only about 2.5 miles from major damage though.  Scary.  We heard sirens but our first alert was that all of our iphones alerted us of the warning and we went to the basement, where we followed the news until it was over.  It was a first for my daughters and my youngest was very scared.  We had several good friends in the immediate path but thankfully no one was injured.

We moved to Kent two years ago and love the town. I regularly attend KSU theatrical performances and am impressed with the quality of their shows. I hope your daughter will be very happy here! 🙂 (Did we connect on College Confidential?)

I haven't been on College Confidential at all so didn't connect there.  She is really excited about Kent and I am very happy that she has found some place that she loves so much.  She loved the town as well.  She initially only looked at smaller schools for walkability and small town feel but she got the same feeling from Kent.

    For my dd:

Kent State University (no word on merit aid yet)

Ashland University (merit aid offered but don't remember name of scholarship)

DD is going to Kent State University in the fall.  She did receive a Trustee Scholarship which covers about 1/2 of her tuition.

Accepted:  Kent State, Ashland University and Wright State University

Why Kent?  She loved it there on visit last year.  She attended a Discover Theatre Day where she attended classes etc and just fell in love.  Not the most financially viable option she had but its where she really wants to be.

    Major:  Theatre Studies (Performance concentration)

CBD absolutely does help with some types of epilepsy. It's proven - in fact, a pharmaceutical called Epidiolex was recently approved by the FDA and it's basically a pharmaceutical version of CBD. I have friends whose children have gone from dozens of seizures a day to just a few a month using CBD oil when literally nothing else has helped. However, like all epilepsy medications it does not work for everyone, and it can also take a lot of trial and error to find the right type. Some do need a bit of added THC to have it be effective. It seems to be most efficacious for "genetic" types of epilepsy such as Dravet or Lennox-Gastault - which is amazing because both of those types of epilepsy can have a terrible impact on people's lives and development, and they are almost always very difficult to treat. It may also work for other types of epilepsy but the jury is still out. Much more research is needed.

If your friend wants to try CBD for her son's epilepsy I highly recommend finding a doctor who will work with her. Pure CBD oil is legal in every state - it's hemp oil and has no psychoactive effect. It can take a lot of work to find the right compound and dosage to use. In addition, CBD can interact with other epilepsy medications (particularly Onfi or other benzodiazepines) and so the dosage of those meds may need to be adjusted.

My 20 year old daughter has focal epilepsy (i.e. it starts in one part of her brain with a focal seizure and will sometimes generalize into bigger seizures), and it is considered intractable. We have considered surgery and actually went very far in the surgery workup process. Luckily, she is doing quite well on her current medications and is only having occasional seizures at this point - in fact she's living 2000 miles away now and is a full time college student :) - so that conversation has been put on hold. We haven't tried CBD oil yet, partly because she loves to travel and I would not want her depending on a medication that she could not take with her traveling overseas.

My cousin's four year old has Dravet syndrome as mentioned above.  It is a catastrophic epilepsy but CBD oil has helped tremendously with his seizures although has not eliminated.  We have already lost his twin brother.

  10. My oldest is my first going through this.  She applied to two schools, Kent State University and Ashland University, and has been accepted to both through rolling admissions.  Both schools are in our state.  Now we wait for financial information as that will likely be the deciding factor. She says she would be happy going to either although her heart is really set on Kent State.

Congrats @littlebug42!!!  Do you have the final merit packages or do you anticipate more?

We have a merit offer from one school although it could go up if she gets a better ACT score before March.  This school will likely also offer her a theatre scholarship but we won't find out about that until after scholarship auditions.   According to the department director, all of the theatre majors are on some amount of theatre scholarship so an offer of some sort is pretty much a sure thing.  The other school has not yet formally offered merit aid but it is automatic with her GPA and ACT score.  She has a chance for more if higher ACT score on December test.  We will likely get no other financial aid so the merit aid is crucial.

  12. My oldest daughter and I love Hamilton and are huge theatre people.  For the two of us, I would likely go up to $150 each for the tour and probably $200 each for Broadway but that is pretty much it.  I paid $100 for a ticket myself to see Chess at the Kennedy Center in February and that was worth every penny but typically that is about the max I will pay for theatre tickets unless I am in New York.  It would pretty much blow our theatre ticket budget for the year.

  13. My favorite food memories from childhood center around my grandparents and visiting their house.  Big farm breakfasts with the whole family.  I still feel that pork chops are best with eggs, biscuits and gravy.  This meal still brings me great comfort although I rarely eat it.  I only really enjoy it when at my uncle's house, whose house now stands exactly where my grandparent's house stood.  Also, chicken and dumplings remain a comfort food for me to this day and have become the favorite of dd14.

Also, I have good memories of my mother's fudge.  She makes the best fudge ever.  My dd14 recently spent time with her to learn how to make it and wrote the recipe down.  She also wrote a sociology paper on the fudge and the family traditions that went with it.

I generally only like to cook when we are entertaining people.  I am always in such a rut and have picky kids so it sucks the joy out of it.  It's more fun when I get to try new things.  Otherwise, it is mostly just drudgery.

  14. My cousin's son has Dravet Syndrome, a catastrophic epilepsy.  They have had fairly good luck with the Charlotte's Web CBD oil although it seemed to help more in the beginning than it is now that he has been on it for more than a year.  His brother did better with it but unfortunately, he passed away last November so  I don't know how that would have held out had he been on it the same amount of time.  He is on several medicines so I am not sure about side effects but he is still pretty energetic most of the time except when he is having a lot of the myoclonic seizures.  He definitely still has good and bad days.  I know that he is better with it than without.

  15. I don't have experience with this condition but my daughter was born with a clubfoot that eventually required tendon surgery.  What was valuable to me was that I found an online support group of parents who sought nonsurgical treatment for clubfeet.  Through that, I was able to get names of who the best doctors were for us to see.  Eventually, we started going to an amazing doctor in St. Louis, which is approximately 6 hours from our home but I don't regret the decision for a minute.  All of the doctors closer wanted to do much more invasive procedures and we were able to find a better way.  My daughter is 14 now and has a fully functional, pain free foot, which she likely would not have had if we had not pursued the treatment that we did.  I would research the condition and find out who is the best that you can see and make it happen.  Even if it is only for a second opinion and they confirm what your current orthopedist has told you.  Shriner's orthopedic hospitals are often a good resource to help find treatment.

  16. I was supposed to have an ablation in March  but the doctor couldn't do it because my uterus is enlarged and the ablation couldn't be done.  I am having a hysterectomy this summer and don't regret making the decision for a minute.  I can't wait to reclaim my life.  I know everything won't be all sunshine and roses but it can't be worse than this half-life I have been living for the past year.  I want to open a bottle of champagne and celebrate.

  17. My kids haven't done this yet but I went to college 1200 miles away from home.  I turned 18 in the dorms with a microwave cake baked by a friend of mine.  I handled it all better than my mother did.  I went home at Thanksgiving, Christmas and for the whole summer my freshman year.  Then, I moved into an apartment and I only went home for Christmas and for about 10 days in the summer.  I specifically chose my college because of how far away from home it was and I loved it.  My mom did move stated while I was in school but I don't remember being bothered by that.  I think that my college experience was the most formative of my life in who I am now as an adult.  I think the experience of having to make decisions for myself while still in a relatively safe environment was critical for me.  I am encouraging my daughters to go at least a little away for college.  Oldest dd is currently looking at schools about 2-3 hours away from home but I am not expecting her to come home too often.  I think she will thrive and she still has the safety of knowing that I am just a text away if she needs some support.
