  1. My 16 year-old daughter is doing Saxon Advanced Math (PreCalc) now. I am debating what's next. She does OK in math but will is more of a theater arts person. I am debating if she should do calculus next just because if she ever does need it, she'll have it. Or if we should just do statistics and spend the other time on writing, literature, drama. Any thoughts? Also what statistics program do you recommened?
  2. I am looking for a study guide for Gulliver's Travels for my 15-year old dd. Can anyone recommend one?
  3. We have used Saxon since pre Algebra and are now using Algebra 2. It is thorough and there are plenty of drill exercises. My one complaint about them is that I can't find any kind of on-line support if you have a question. We don't have the Dive CD. Maybe that would help, but I didn't want to buy it. We have also started using Khan Academy as a supplement. I think Saxon covers the basics but it is a bit dry and not very creative. But it seems to work the best for my daughter who needs a lot of drill.
  4. I am looking for tips or resources to help my 9th daughter read faster. I wouldn't say she has problems. I just think it would be to her advantage to read faster.
  5. It looks like we need a graphics calculator for our next lesson in Saxon Algebra I and we will need one for Algebra 2. Any recommendations on makes, models and where to buy cheaply?
  6. Has anyone used the Latin Road to English Grammar? IF so, what are your thoughts? Any comparisons to Henle?
  7. My 14 yo dd completed the IEW Student Writing Intensive Level C and has been working in the IEW US History Based Writing Lessons on her own with little assistance from me. Writing is not my strength and like like to get some assistance. It doesn't look like IEW offers online classes. Can you recommend any other online writing programs or someone who works with students and evaluates their work?
  8. I am looking for an on-line Latin course for my 8th grade daughter. We have completed Latin Christina I, but would like to start Henle Latin (9th Grade level). I am looking at the Memoria Press courses. I would love to hear from someone who took this course or any other online Latin course.
  9. Hi, the state of Colorado curriculum calls for earth science in 9th grade. Can anyone recommend a good earth science text? THanks.
  10. We are from Colorado. We spent five years sailing around the world. Our daughter was five when we left and ten when we got home. We knew we would be coming back to Colorado. We are not military. Just to keep things straight, I filed a home school letter every year and I gave my daughter the required standardized tests and I keep records and samples of her work. In the end, I am not really sure it mattered. I do recommend you keep your options open. In Colorado, the public school basically had to take my daughter. If you think you will put your child in a private school, they may have special requirements. So think about how long you will be gone and what you want to do when you come home. Patti
  11. Unfortunately my DD is only 14. I would consider sending her if she were a year or two older. We spent almost five years sailing around the world while our daughter was 5 -10 years old. There were lots of interesting things to learn, but I also found I needed a support group back home. Let us know how we can help you! Why are you living overseas?
  12. We don't have cable or satellite TV. So I think I'll start with movies we know but in Spanish - Harry Potter maybe. I may try some libraries in different areas of town or get recommendations from the librarians.
  13. My 13 yo dd and I are studying Spanish. I have heard it is good to watch some Spanish TV. If you have any favorite shows, please recommend them. Gracias!
  14. I am looking for an online Spanish class for me and my 8th grade daughter. We'd like to get more practice with dialog. Any suggestions?
  15. I am considering buying Rainbow Science for my 14 yo dd. Even though I have a science and engineering background, it seems that many of our experiments with the various programs we have used have failed. I think Rainbow Science is expensive, but I am wondering if we will get more science done because we have everything and if it will be interesting.
  16. We used Spell to Write and Read by Wanda Sanseri and really liked it. I think it is well organized and can be used in grades 3-12. This book has probably been one of my better investments.
  17. I am looking at ordering Henle Latin. It appears that there are a number of syllabuses available. Do I need a syllabus or can we just work beginning to end at our own pace?
  18. We've used R&S 3-7 and it works well, but I agree that it is dry as dust! Since you already have the books, I'd probably keep going with them...
  19. Has anyone used th e online Brave Writer course. I am looking for an online writing course for my 8th grade daughter. Writing is not my strength and I'd like her to get some feedback and grades from someone else. Any other suggestions?
  20. We are on lesson 70 in Saxon Algebra 1 and so far, so good although is seems a bit dry. I am looking for something to supplement this with some critical thinking or more interesting problems. Any suggestions?
  21. Thanks. I have heard of these, and will check them out.
