  1. Huh. I started out reading this thread thinking it was crazy, because I LOATHE packing lunches. It's one of those things that's always making me regret having signed the kids up for some kind of class or camp. But I'm always making those lunches under stress, worried about the ice packs and the amount of food etc. If I can do it at my leisure and don't have to worry about temperatures and such...that might really help me!

I'm glad I read the thread after all. Thanks for the great ideas!

  2. I don't know what you mean. Are you saying some people poop on toilet seats by compulsion?

That would explain the toilets at Target* or public parks.

    Wow.

*In Target's defense they are pretty good at staying on top of bathroom disasters.

I can't even bring myself to type it out. It came up in this thread a little while ago.

I need to go scrub down my bathroom now.

  3. Is it just me, or is Dr. Oz the ladies' checkout magazine of TV. Every day it's the *ONE SECRET FOOD THAT WILL MAKE YOU DROP 10 POUNDS THIS WEEK* or *THE COMMON FOOD THAT IS KILLING YOU RIGHT NOW!* I see his ads, and I giggle. My mom watches him, and while I'm glad she is learning more about nutrition (he seems to be pro-whole foods at least,) some of the over-the-top stuff is annoying. Everytime I make a healthy choice, someone asks "Oooh, did you see that on Dr. Oz?" NO, I didn't freakin' see it on Dr. Oz; I read books.

Oh, but we do eat nitrate-free bacon and ham. :D But not because of Dr. Oz!

I was thinking that yesterday. When I've heard him speak at length on any topic, he seemed very knowledgeable and wise. Then I hear bits and pieces of the things he says, and I'm .

  4. :bigear: We're in a rut here too. We eat a lot of burgers with various cheeses and toppings (bacon, avocado, etc.). I'm making chicken pot pie filling tonight, though that does have carrots and 1/3 C of corn starch in it.

What about soups? Our standard chicken soup has no carbs other than the carrots, and I add some separately cooked noodles for the kids. I made a sausage soup the other night that was totally delish. I need more low-carb soup recipes myself--everyone here prefers thicker soups, which usually involve potatoes.

  5. When we're in need of a bread-y substance, I usually make biscuits with Pamela's mix (usually with herbs and cheese, yum!). However, the kids would like the occasional sandwich or mini pizza, and it's not really worth my making or buying a whole loaf for these occasions. Does anyone make any sort of quick thing to serve these purposes? Or, if you make biscuits, do you have any suggestions on how to toughen them up so they don't fall apart when we try to use them for sandwiches?

    Thanks :D

  6. Great, thanks for the reassurance and ideas, everyone. I'm trying to avoid going to the grocery store this pay cycle, so I want to use veggies from my garden as much as possible, even if they're not exactly what the recipe calls for! I did come up with a can of organic peas, so maybe I'll add some of those in at the end too.

Plansrme, thanks for the tip, I'll definitely add it in with the peas!

  7. My pot pie recipe calls for celery, carrots, peas, corn, mushrooms, and potatoes. I only have carrots, mushrooms, and potatoes. The chicken stock was made with plenty of celery in it for flavor though. Do you think pot pie with just those three vegetables would be yummy? What if I added cubed yellow summer squash?

Or do I really need to get off my rear and go off the grocery store?

  8. SPICY THAI??!!! :svengo:

I hope I forget about these tomorrow. Glad I lost my taste for cupcakes, and probably cupcake shots.

i LOVE ice cold Blue Moon with an orange wedge. :001_smile:

I know. It's killing me. Now I can't stop thinking about them too. They have the potential to be amazing or disgusting, I think. I'll report back after I finally fulfill the craving!

Dd9 says they taste like feet, yet she eats them.:001_huh:

    I don't like them.

Why does she know what feet taste like?

    :tongue_smilie:

  9. MiniBlondes, your plan sounds great.

I have to update my previous post. You know that cousin that I'm slightly jealous of, b/c she likes her kids school, and they like their school, and she can just kiss their little noses and put them on the bus every morning?

I went to have a closer look at her back-to-school pics and read the comments. She is homeschooling her youngest child!!! The others are still going to ps, but she's keeping her 5yo home this year b/c their school district switched to full-day kindergarten and she disagrees with it. So she's teaching him at home for K and will put him in school for first grade.

So there he was in his new clothes and backpack, getting his picture taken at the bus stop with big siblings, but then he followed Mom back in the house to homeschool as the bus drove away. LOL I hope they have a great year.

Families are great. Kids are great. Back-to-school pics are great, no matter what 'school' means to each family.

That's awesome!!! I often feel like the only person who doesn't agree with full-day K. That was the straw that broke the camel's back WRT sending oldest DD to school. Her K year was the year they switched to full day.

I agree that whatever is working best for each family is great. I wish I had a wonderful school to send my kids to. Sadly, I suspect that my imaginary ideal school does not actually exist :tongue_smilie:

  10. I think their thing is to talk about the same issues talked about in other religions without the aspect of a deity. So they talk about morality, etc. but not within the context of there being a creator/god responsible for those things.

They also get involved with community service projects without the aspect of trying to promote a specific religion.

It's not necessarily just for atheists. It's also not about atheism.

Huh, yeah, maybe. The area we live in is pretty liberal, so that's the sort of thing I do with my friends and family already. I guess I could see where, if the people around you were religious, you might want a place to discuss things from a shared viewpoint. Because we live where we live, that hadn't occurred to me.

    Thanks!

  11. I was sad at the time when I realized we couldn't do everything I wanted, but I have been so thankful ever since. I think this has been our most productive year so far and I feel a real sense of accomplishment. (We start our years in Jan.)

Why can't I seem to do this?! I put together an expected daily schedule of the subjects I want to teach this coming year. It ended up being something like a 9-hour day :( I just can't seem to accept that we can't accomplish ALL of it.

  12. From the atheists I know and have talked to, when they do get together it's not so much to talk about what isn't as to talk about the things that are, like ethics and such. They have the same kind of discussions that any religious person would about how the world should deal with problems, how people should act in moral dilemmas, etc., the only real difference being that the ideas don't stem from a religious text. Instead of trying to figure out what God wants them to do, they try to figure out the right thing to do.

    Hopefully that made sense. :tongue_smilie:

Huh. I do that with friends already (and here). I don't care to join a special group for it, I guess.

  13. That's what I'm wondering.

I've seen pamphlets for the local secular humanism org at the library. I considered going briefly, but then I wondered what the heck the point would be! Do they get together and snark on about how there is no God and religious people are deluded? Do they get together to do service projects? There are plenty of other opportunities for that. I'm totally mystified by what would go on in one of their meetings.
