  1. You are living my dream....I so would love to live in Alaska! Enjoy every minute!

We are working to be intentional about making the most of the time here. It has been lovely so far. Today was clear and we had a great view of Mt McKinley! Beautiful

  2. Oh! How exciting! Seeing this is one of my bucket list items.

(Note to self: Northern Lights, but no snow, third week of September...)

LOL you made me smile wi your note to self ....might want to make it second week of September as we have snow in our forecast later this week....,,,Crazy! The first frost was in August....HaHaHa

  3. Tonight I saw the Northern Lights! They blew me away!

We moved to Alaska a few weeks ago. I have been dreading the cold and darkness to come. We have spent a lot of time and money preparing for the extreme weather by purchasing coats, boots, gloves, scarves, winterizing vehicles and getting automatic starters on the cars. There is a forcast for snow next this week. I have been dreading the skipping of fall going right into winter, then tonight! The Northern Lights had me in awe! I stood in the cold watching them wave across the sky and all I could think was

I am in Alaska watching the Aurora Borealis ! How cool is this?

  4. Oh thanks... I think my kids would prefer drops to tablets/capsules. I will look into the d3 as another poster mentioned.

  5. [quote name="sbgrace" post="5198758" timestamp

So it's alarming. It's also consistent with what I've seen. I've yet to know anyone tested who had adequate D without supplementing.

Testing? Where or how do I test for Viamin D levels. We are loosing and hour of sunlight every 10 days so it will not be long before there is no sun....at least until after the New Year I think. This is our first winter so I am not really sure what to expect. Should I look into a SAD light? It sounds from your post that the light may not be beneficial either. I have been told to get ready to go on meds as most people up here do....I would really rather not if there is so,etching I can do to prevent that. Plus I have my husband and Xhildren to consider. The extreme cold will be enough of an adjustment without suffering from the effects of a vitamin deficiency.

  6. I love this topic! I have been amazed to realize many of our traditions happened. My DD told a friend once that we always have little ceasars pizza on Christmas Eve....we had done it twice but you bet we continued that year when I realized they expected it.

Here are a few of ours

Friday night is pizza night....little Ceasars is cheap and I get a night off cooking. No clean up either....we have moved so we now make our own,

We make Toffee in November with another family and share the tradition as it was shared with us. Kids are anxiously awaiting snow this year so we can begin making it and cool it in the snow as our original directions calls for. We lived in the South so have never been able to do that

At Christmas we hide a pickle ornament on Christmas morning the kids all look for. The one that finds it gets to make canned cinnamon rolls with mom. They are all old enough to make on their own but it's tradition I am there too.

We drink Eggnog out of special cups we got at a German Christmas market the first day I find it in the supermarket.

We drive and look at Christmas lights every year.

We attend Christmas Eve service and open PJs before bedtime.

We color eggs for Easter and dad hides them....harder each year as kids get older.

We have a scavenger hunt with clues written by dad for birthdays. The final gift is something to share with siblings like a pack of soda and bag of candy. It is the clues and hunt that is fun. He once had them stand facing west and click like a chicken, turn right moo like a cow and flap like a bird.....very fun

We make Thanksgiving dinner together. Last year my 16 Year old DS made the pies!

We eat black eye peas and collard greens on New Year's Day.

We drink sparkling cider from special crystal champagne flutes New Years Eve

Pizza on Christmas Eve (I was just reminded we did not do that last year) smile

We have a good night train each night before bedtime. They know its time to hug, kiss and get tickled by mom and dad.

We make our daddy's favorite cookies and leave them for Santa.

I get flowers a day late for my anniversary.....DH forgot them when dating, then first Anniv so we made it a tradition...LOL

Dad sends his girls to get their summer toes when schools out. We go have Pedis done together

    We watch Duck Dynasty together.

We play a video game with our dad each week and look forward to binging on school breaks.

  7. Thanks, ladies. I'm a wee bit sick of this. Told someone IRL today what is going on and was told to find joy in the situation. I refrained from slapping her silly.

HUGS! I am amazed you had willpower to refrain from slapping her silly! Dumb comment she made

  8. I heard this site was a great place. Several people I know suggested it stating it was a wealth of knowledge and a great place for discussion. Being a new person, I have not quite had that reception. I posted in another thread and the responses were lovely and kind. Not so much here. I have done nothing other than share my true story and have been basically called a liar. Pretty sure this site is not for me. Never been treated like this before, and never expected this here. Thanks for the welcome.

HUGS to you ! It is a great place. I am so sorry you were treated with less than kindness.....calling someone a liar in effect is not kind in my book, It really is a good site with great people.

To all who question the validity of 2 biscuits post let me say I can verify her family were treated very harshly and in a non typical way during this incident. My family was there and attended the church...we were witness to the unbelievable events. When we visited and brought any American food to their house we had to take all trash and leftovers with us. I have no idea why this happened to them.

I had all my babies in Germany and the pads provided had no adhesive on them at all....this was in 2001 when my youngest was born that I was given said pads to use. had my husband bring me some from home to use.

I know this post has nothing to do withe topic other than to say...wow, how amazed and disappointed I am that my friend was made to feel less than welcome and called a liar just because her experience was different than others.

  9. I am in my mid 40's and this month my menstral flow has been wierd. It startd out with just spotting for the first 4 days. Then, when it would normally be over it started gushing. I mean I can feel it come out in warm gush...that is so not normal for me. I was standing in line at Barnes and Nobel waiting to order coffe the first time it happened. It gushed two times before my coffee was ordered and prepared. I was worried the front of my jeans were going to be covered in bright red...it felt so yuck.

It has been 3 days and it continues....it is not so much that I worry I am losing too much blood but just enough I wonder what is going on?

Any thoughts? experience with this kind of thing? I usually have 4-5 lig to medium days and its done.

    thanks

  10. Oh today I need to Lis my blessings...thanks for the thread

    We are all healthy.

Our dog joined us yesterday for the second part of our trip to Alaska

Thankful for friends I can vent to about this 2 weeks with my in laws

thankful my in laws love us, even though their expectations are crazy

My friend gave me 3 books before I moved and I will get to read one soon!

The air conditioning is working well! It is going to be 110 this weekend so, yeah Air!

I am married to a wonderful man ! I love him more each day!

Going to get dessert with family!

  11. My celebration - ds just got a 28 on the ACT! I'm so proud of him! Me - lost 10 pounds this month! Getting 2 Chinese exchange students for 9 days in about a week! All good!

Oh how wonderful! We just got ACT scores at our house too. My DS got a 29 and his younger sister got a 24! I share your pride. ......just going to ignore my weight, we are moving across country, staying with in laws for 2 weeks and well....not a formula for wight loss... rejoicing with you on your weight loss though!

  12. Are there places where more somber attire is expected or even nice attire? I am packing for her but I want to make little lists so she knows what is best for what days.

Your SIL can let her know if its a nicer attire day...a skirt is fine to dress up a bit. People always tell Americans to dress in dark colors because a lot of Europeans wear black:shoes, jackets, clothes....However they also wear bright colors just in different places than us...some of their shoes are quite bright and pink Mohawks to name some....

Just pack so she is comfortable in shoes and has the ability to layer if it is still cool. A Camera is a must to capture her trip to share when she gets home. You can buy a big sd memory to hold a lot of photos.

as others have said make sure she can move her own luggage. SIL can explain about plugs and voltage so she does not ruin any appliances like a hair dryer.

HUGS to you! She will be fine and have a memorable trip to share with you when she gets back.

  13. I have two favorite adult fiction series. They are written by Christian authors but are not preachy. Dee Henderson's O'Malley Series . The series is about 6 siblings....well they are all orphans that as adults adopted ach other and stick up for each other whenever needed. Each book focuses on a different person and their profession. I love the research Dee puts into the books. You get a glimps into different professions with their unique challenges. Her ability to create and developer characters has kept me reading all her books. The stories are not too simple and yet they are not so complex that you need quiet to focus while reading.

The second series is by Robin Jones Gunn. Her Sister Chicks series is a series in the seance they follow similar format but they do not use the same characters so you can jump in anywhere. The premis of the series is friendship of women going on vacation. They pair of women go on vacation all over the world: Paris, London, Amsterdam, Mexico and Hawaii to name a few. Robin's research is incredible. As I read the story set in Paris I knew the cafe she was mentioning because I had been ther and she described it perfectly. The book covers everyday things that happen to us as women....you know like dying our hair black but it comes out green! These books keep me laughing. For the most part they are fun and light hearted but the characters may be dealing with a tough situation that has me crying with them. However, crying does not last long and ends in laughter. I discovered these in my 30's and have shared them with my mom as well as my grandmother. They are fun summer reads!

  14. Shaklee vitamin B is a staple in our house. It helps with mood swings...when hubby is feeling stressed he takes it, if someone is a bit sensitive another family member will give them one....we love it. The meal shakes are tasty We also love lecithin for memory it helps unbelievably and it is also good in cooking as it breaks oil down. I love the pots and pan cleaner as well as basic H. I use that in 3 bottles to clean everything. I love that it only take a few drops to make a bottle of cleaner so when my 11 yr old uses the whole bottle to clean the mirror I am not freaking out about the cost. Basic H is also safe on plants...my grandma uses her run off from dishes in the garden. I cannot compare to the others as I only used a few amway things a friend gave me.

I joined Shaklee so I can just order my won products. However my Shaklee lady will do it all for me and she answers questions when we have them. My hubby was having joint problems and her recommendation has worked wonders.

  15. I think Venice is a must see. It was one of my favorite places as an older teen/young adult living in Europe. I did enjoy Pompeii and was amazed that we think we are so advanced and yet they had paved sidewalks and heated pools! However Pompeii is limited as in you can only look around there...ruins. Venice has history as well as shopping on the Realto Bridge, great little pastry shops to enjoy cappuccino as you watch people pass by. I guess I say this to say Venice is a city you can spend all day and night in where as Pompeii is a stop over kind of place. Oh, water taxi you cannot forget water taxi! Plus you can feed the pigeons at least I think you still can in the square.

  16. I was wondering if any on the hive have tried a diet where the food is prepackaged for you?

Nutri system is the one I was looking at.

What did you like about it?

What was the best part of doing it?

    What was the most challenging?

    Did you loose any weight?

  17. I opted for the ipad over the iphone simply because so many people say they use the iphone mostly for other things than talking on the phone. I have the ipad mini and find the size very portable. If you get the 3 g you can make calls with your ipad and use it like an iphone....the best of both worlds?

We use the ipad a lot for skyping and face time with my in laws. My mom i law got herself one so she can face time with the grandkids

I use it in the kitchen when cooking. I use pandora in both the kitchen and bedroom. We watch netflix movies on it. I love not having to boot up the computer to check email.

They do the same things...I wanted a bigger screen so I went with ipad. When I asked on here before Christmas about which to get....

people with both said they would not want to have to choose only one! LOL

  18.

This casserole looks really interesting. I may have to get some frozen hash browns and try it out. I was wondering if you had tried it, and if so did the eggs set all the way to the middle?

I did try it and it was not so tasty as written. The next day I cooked some sausage, added salsa and made breakfast burritos!!! YUMMY

Later that week I made it again for my Bible study and added the sausage and salsa when I cooked it in the crockpot. They ate every last morsel!!! I had requests for the recipe. The second time it was a little mushy, so next time I am going to add less milk to compensate for the added liquid in the salsa.

My family and friends give it 2 thumbs up with the modifications.

  19. Our last trip we opted for the dining plan. It was wonderful! We ate at more upscale places than we would normally have and it included dessert which we would never have paid for out of pocket. It was more than enough food for us for the day. The ease was a huge benefit as well as already knowing the full cost of our vacation.....no kids wanting a snack and us saying no because of the cost for that mickey mouse ice cream...we could say YES!!! lets get ice cream. A wonderful peace of mind

  20. The last house we lived in had the laundry in the basement and that is the year everyone started doing their own laundry. I wash everything on cold so they do not have to check water temperature. The only clothes they do not do are Sunday clothes and sweaters/sweats. Their jeans, tshirts and undergarments all go in together. I gave each child a day to do their laundry and that worked good for us. I would just check with A on Monday to see if her laundry had been done and then with B on Tuesday to ensure he was doing his.

  21. Thank you for all the input. I will tag my post....thanks for the directions on how that works. I did not know that...it sounds very helpful.

I was thinking about having my DD attend the Bible study at our chapel. One of the studies is Healthy living by Rex Russel. We are also going away for a weekend to to Passport 2 Purity and I thought about incorporating the 4th book in God's design for sex. I am thinking I could use that to create our own Health class. The study will give her a lot of health and nutrition as it is taught by a nutritionist. Between passport and facing the facts the truth about sex and you she will get her "sex education" portion.

Am I missing something that needs to be covered?

  22. I am not sure this is what your asking for. My family loves it when I buy the blackened salmon from sam's club. I bake it and we add that salad. I do make all the salad in a bowl and we dish from there but the Salmon is not in the bowl...that way I can portion the fish out and everyone gets a good amount. My family really loves that meal with rolls........

I am craving that now...lol. Next trip to Sam's that will be on my list....yummy
