  1. I agree on the allergy (I had a golden who was allergic to leaf mold, which I did not figure out until she lost much of the hair on her chest), but it also could just be dry skin.  My border/springer mix itched like crazy when we first got her.  I started adding about a tablespoon of oil to her dry food, just canola or soybean oil, whatever I was using.  It cleared up in a few days.  I still pull out the oil from time to time if she starts scratching.  Everything you read says that if they have just one flea, it can cause that, but like you, I never found a flea or flea dirt, and neither did my vet.  My dog has light hair, so it should have shown up pretty easily.

A scratching dog drives me crazy, so I hope you figure it out quickly.

I like the idea of adding oil to her food. I have added egg as I remember that being said to help with a glossy coat and hoped maybe it would help her skin too. I will start adding oil to her food....she loved to lick the coconut oil off us when we put it on our skin. I bet she would love some of her own.

  2. I could have written your post. Exactly.

This is also the daughter who doesn't care about punishment. 95% of the time she's a great kid. But there's nothing we can "threaten" her with (removal of things or privileges, sitting alone, etc.) that will help her choose to obey when she doesn't want to. Ugh. She'd rather take the punishment. She's totally strong willed. I know someday it will be a positive in her life, but right now it makes her mama crazy.

My Ds was this way with discipline. If I said for a week you cannot _______. He would look at me and say, so next Thursday I can _____________ again. I finally found with him I had to phrase it like this.

You cannot do __________ until I see a change of heart in you.

Oh, the horror of not knowing when it would end. That was torture and motivated him. He also was not to ask if I had noticed..LOL

  3. This.  Black bears usually can be scared off easily by alot of noise.  We keep a shaker can (a tin can with coins in it) by the door.  We also have what we call our "bear song" that we sing very loudly if we have to go outside at night.

Recently we had a younger, small bear who couldn't get into our bear-proof trashcan, so he sat on top of the trash can and howled.  It was so sad!  I almost wanted to open the can for him...

oh I cannot imagine the howl of a bear. Sad but you did good not encouraging him. I did discover they have bear spray...pretty interesting. I am just afraid if I was every close enough to use it....I would be in shock and stock still.

  4. HUGS!!! It seems every year I feel I could/should have done more. Yet, my kids love learning and test well. My oldest will fly the nest next year and I realize that FLY ladies saying is true for housework as well as school. Housework done "incorrectly" still blesses my family.     School work done "incorrectly" still blesses my children.

Cultivate a love of learning and reading while building relationship with your littles. It will serve them well in the future. The elementary yearsare all about exposure to topics that will be covered in greater detail in later grades. Read, have fun and as others have suggested tap into all the ways of learning. It is ok if much of the learning comes from books, videos and such instead of from you. She will be learning. A child that loves to learn will continue to learn.

Looking back I think that is what I did right with my kids.....instilled a love of reading and learning. Those loves have taken them far.

HUGS again! This temporary season will end. Take care of yourself and your littles.

  5. At least that I can tell.    She is acting liking she is infested, though, the way she carries on scratching and biting.

I have checked her over and never saw any fleas or flea dirt.    She has short dark hair so it's not impossible,  but I can't believe I haven't

seen a single flea.  This is fairly new and rather sudden onset.

I would say that I did slack on the flea medicine this summer but once she started acting like this I applied K9 Advantix.

But no change in the scratching.    And I have two dogs and the other one is not doing this.

    Any thoughts?

Oh thanks for posting this OP. My dog have been doing the same thing the last few weeks since we moved to a new place. She scratches like crazy! I wondered about dry skin...what can be done about that? She has not had a bath in a long time....it is cold here already so I have not given her a bath...will shampooing help?

  6. http://www.amazon.com/Sex-Position-Day-Playing-Cards/dp/B004A9C0AK                 My boys are 12 and 15 and being homeschool VERY she;ltered to stuff like this. Do I freak out or go cry? I am major pi$$ed

I would not want my son to have access to these cards either. So sorry your boys has this exposure. I am thinking about the age of the boy that gave the cards to your son. A 9 year old is curious....he is a lot younger than your BIg boys...maybe this was his way of making an impression.....getting attention. He clearly has no point of reference. I think of jokes I heard someone tell that I later retold....now as an adult I shake my head. They were inappropriate and crude but I did not have any point of reference to realize that.

I agree with the others that have mentioned what a great opportunity you have to talk with your boys. I am sure they are curious about what they have seen. There is a right time to investigate that subject and they may even want to keep them in mind for their honeymoon as a fun exploration with their wives. Commend them for the courage it took to bring them to you. Wow, you have done well mom to raise boys that feel comfortable bringing something to you that they feel uneasy with. That is something you want to encourage to continue.

I would open our home as the place to play. If pressed be honest with you boys in your reason. You feel like you cannot trust the material that may be present at the neighbors home and so do not feel comfortable with them playing there.

I really wonder if the 9 yr old was going for shock factor!

  7. I have enjoyed reading responses and if I knew how to quote many I would. Congrats to those that have lost weight.

My DH was not saying all braces are for only cosmetic. Our Dd needed to widen her mouth and it also helped with her breathing but my main thing was in how the narrow squirrel mouth affected her self image.

I am 43 and had 3 c sections.......I well remember the pain! I knew a woman a few years ago that had a tummy tuck and she said it hurt worse.....um...that has kept me from seriously thinking about it. Then 3 years ago a neighbor he her girls done and lypo...going to stay with her and seeing how much pain she was in for the first week makes me think hard. Both women are glad they did it. I wonder about DH...he hated for me to go under anestesia when I had to with my babaies!not sure he will love that reality. The risks are real.

We have disposable income and could afford the procedures. I have not lost a ton of weight and I could stand too. Our life has been so stressful the last ten years and I have stayed about the same weight??I have lost then gained and lost then gained. It seems every time I set out to loose the end result was a size larger! I told my DH I am not dieting again.

I would like to get rid of the belly so it will just be me and my DH having s*x and not me, him and the belly. He is a very supportive DH and tells me how beautiful I am and that he loves my curves....I just look at my belly and wonder how that, thus me can be s*xy.

I do have two teen girls nd I wonder how this will impact them???what message they may get. We never talk about weight or dieting...only eating healthy. It is not a must have but would be a great to have!

  8. I've seen them twice. Both times they were blue green. Very cool.

I am however ignoring the discussion of snow and frost. Seeing the northern lights twice in 30+ years does in no way make up for the winters around here :D

It snowed today and they are calling for more this week. There is no more ignoring snow here! UgH

  9. i have been thinking about my hubby's comment after a friend had a boo b job and lypo. He said" we do not think anything of a person spending $5000 for braces for self esteem reasons so why not boo bs or a tummy tuck? It is the same type of thing".

That has made me think about getting a mommy makeover. I talked with DH and he would support me in having some work done. How would I go about starting this type of thing?

Have you thought of it? Researched it? Had the procedure? If you have are you glad you did?

Where would one start to find a Dr?

  10. I had to look up dry cabins to see what you were referring to. Last night when I read it, I thought you meant outhouses (since you were talking about them later), but I see that it means there is no running water! I would have never of thought there would be something like that there!

How cool about the blueberries, raspberries and strawberries! I never would have thought they'd be growing by the side the of road (other than blueberries maybe). I guess I wouldn't have to miss my fruit trees too much if I could gather berries every year.

I would love to hear of your experiences in the future or maybe trade emails so I can ask you some questions after you've been there awhile! PM me if you are interested.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience(s). I'm really intrigued by the idea of living up there. It seems like there would be a lot of challenges (driving in the snow, the dark in the winter, etc.) but it also seems like there is so much beauty, etc. We actually visited Alaska years ago but it was during the summer and only for a few days. It was so beautiful. I know I'd love the summers there but am concerned about us getting older and living with so much snow, big heating bills, etc.

Where are you in AK? We would be in Anchorage which I've read is more mild weather wise compared to the interior of Alaska.

I tried to message you but it would not let me. I sent an email to the one listed on your blog.  You might have to message me? It kept saying I had to enter the full name of the person in the field....we do not have names...too strange.

  11. Nope - we save hoarding of toilet for hunting season!

Congratulations on the snow and the Northern Lights, OP!  You have probably been told, but one of the most fun places to watch the lights is right by you - head out to Chena Hot Springs when the temp gets below zero and the weather is clear.  You can sit in the warm water and watch the lights ripple over your head.

We cannot wait to go to Chena Hot springs! I want my hair to freeze while my body gets hot!  What a great adventure to look forward to.

  12. We try to use examples from life around us. When there is something in the news about teens and s*xting for instance and use it as a springing board. "I heard ABC having an interesting discussion on----- fill in the blank, I am not sure you are dealing with his yet but let's talk a few minutes about it. Then I share whatever I feel is an appropriate introduction to the topic. That just keeps topics open for discussion that way when they do hear about things they have a bit of reference and can come to me and share also to get clarification. I always encourage them to ask when they hear things that are new or they are unsure of. You never know where they will hear things....youth group at church, friend visiting a friend of theirs....I like to be the source of info for my kids.

  13. Wow! That's really neat. Your post is timely. My husband and I have been talking about a very slim possibility of looking into moving to Alaska several years from now (probably won't happen but you never know). I would love to hear more about your experiences!!

    Jenn&Charles,

It is beautiful here. The pace seems to be relaxed. I have been amazed at how many dry cabins there are. When we first got here I saw an add in the newspaper for people to send in photos of their outhouses. That cracked me up until I mentioned it to the hairdresser and she got excited about sending in a photo of her outhouse. She had painted a port o let to look like a cottage and her husband out lights around it. People are sustenance lifestyle...not sure how to say that correctly but moose and fishing season are huge deals up here. The wildlife is amazing and so is the amount of plants you can use to make jelly. Wild blueberries grow beside the road as do raspberries and strawberries. I can tell you about the cold after I survive our first winter....not too excited about that....except I get to go ice fishing,

  14. I've seen them twice. Both times they were blue green. Very cool.

I am however ignoring the discussion of snow and frost. Seeing the northern lights twice in 30+ years does in no way make up for the winters around here :D

We keep getting looks of pity from locals when they hear its our first winter here! LOL my daughters bus driver told her he would not lie to her....she was going to FREEZE period! Just love her electric blanket! Ha ha

  15. You need to be involved in outdoor activities and if you are, you will be happy in Anchorage. Years ago, we listened to KOOL-FM in Anchorage (Streaming Audio). Cary Carrigan was the DJ, but he moved to another station in Anchorage. My impression is that the wind can be pretty fierce at times. I had a friend who lived there, years ago. There is an advantage, to you being Residents of Alaska! The State of Alaska will pay you, from the oil royalties they receive. :-) Enjoy Alaska! Hopefully, you will be able to see the "Northern Lights" many many times, in the future. Also, I think, but am not sure about this, that Alaska is one of the handful of states that does not have a State Income Tax?

We are looking to be involved in activities at least until it gets so cold we have to stay in. We are in Fairbanks so I do not think our wind is as bad as Anchorage but we get 30 degrees colder....my mind cannot imagine -20 much less -50!

  16. How far North are you? It makes a difference in intensity.

Tammi K we are pretty far north....I think it was the street lights around me and the scale was only like a 4 for seeing them I am thinking when the number is higher and I get away from lights it will be better viewing.
  17. Oh, you are a brave woman. Frost in August, egads! I get the heebie jeebies if I have to spend too much time in close-toed shoes and have something wrapping my neck. But I've heard Alaska is an extraordinary place!

Yesterday is SNOWED! Yep, 18 th of Sept and we had snow. In any other state like Sc, Ga, or Nc my husband gleefully proclaiming "It snowed last night!" would have been met with shouts of joy and questions of school being cancelled. Yesterday we all said "OOOHHHH NNNNOOOOOO!"

Thankfully it melted but the next snow it may be here for good....ugh

  18. Wow, seeing them so soon after your arrival! Yeah.

It took us several months before we got to see them.

Now, after living here for 3 years, when my DH comes to me at midnight to tell me they are active, I carefully consider the temperature and my desire to get dressed in warm clothing before I rush out the door. But, i do remember the first time I saw them!!! Beautiful.

They were not that bright as I had the street light in my eyes...lol and I did not see colors I have heard of, but I did see them moved and shift, growing thicker and pulsing like. I look forward to driving out always one night wight the family and to seeing a better show. However, it was just cool to see what others had been talking about.

  19. Going with your gut instinct is always a safe bet. My DH Took our oldest to a movie after we had seen it. We were wanted to let him see the movie and thought he was ready but did have a mingling feeling it might be too intense. We did not listen to that feeling and took him anyway. DS came home saying he was sorry he watched it.....it bothered him and even a year later he said it was too intense for him....We are super protective of him as he is very sensitive and yet we still let him see something he felt he was not ready for......I do think it would have been ok if it had notbeen on the big screen....I think it was transformers and he was 14 ? I am still sorry to this day he was bothered by something we felt he was ready for.

I have found when you present "fair" to kids they do not want life fair. Sunshine has to take naps every day, if life was fair then you would have to take naps too. Some kids do not get to watch movies, if life was fair we could not watch movies. We do not want life fair.

My older two are almost graduated and we have a younger in middle school. We make decisions based on ability. Some adults can drink coffe before bed and it does not bother them. others do not have that ability. It is the same with kids. Some will be ready for freedoms, movies and such before others. My kids know they will get to do things when they are ready...it is not about age and fairness but about readiness.
