  1. I have 3 sons who are currently all math/science majors at university (2 seniors and a junior, all earning 3.9 or better.) When we were homeschooling them, it was apparent they would end up in math or science majors. We looked at MUS and quickly ruled it out.

We ended up using and liking Chalkdust for almost everything from PreAlgebra up. (We didn't try Chaldust geometry; we used Jacob's geometry instead. And one of our sons wanted to do the AP Calculus BC exam, so he used Thinkwell Calculus since Chalkdust Calculus only covers Calculus I.) We're still using Chalkdust for the kids still at home.

I really like Chalkdust. Dana Mosley is a very gifted teacher, explaining concepts in a way that makes math even more exciting for a math lover and makes it clear for a student who is not as math oriented.

:iagree: We used Saxon for Algebra 1/2 and I liked it to a degree. The difficulty arose when we reached a topic I could not help the kids to understand. No matter what I did they just did not get it.

This year my DD is in PreCal and I knew we needed a teacher for her. I found Chalkdust for my 6ht grader actually and my 10th grader said "mom, that guy makes it easy. I could learn from him." It is expensive but well worth it. We are several weeks into Precal and she is enjoying math. I love that you also get email access to Dana Mosley if your student gets stuck. If you buy a used copy you can pay a little more to have the teacher support also which is what I did.

I do agree the child must put forth the effort. Dana Mosleys instruction makes it easy to understand.

  2. He's not ready. Relax! Boys take longer than girls, generally. Though my daughter read at 4, my son couldn't read well until 7.5. Like you, I got all worried. I pressured him a lot when he was 6, and made him cry, which I feel bad about, because I was getting worried that he wasn't keeping up with sister's pace.

At 7 and a half, it finally kicked in. He is now an excellent student with a wonderful grasp of the language and a great vocabulary.

Just read to him what he can't yet read. Don't pressure him. He can't do it yet, or he would do it!

:iagree:The last part of the brain that gets it stuff (totally drawing a blank on what its called....it coats all nerve endings?) is the part we use to read. There is not way to see if that has happened. Some kids it just takes longer.

Both my girls did not learn to read fluently until 5th grade. In 6th grade is when they discovered a joy in reading. TIME was what they needed. :grouphug: to you, I know how frustrating it can be.

  3. Years ago I played w dh and the teens, but the little one was too little. now dh and I are over it . . . my pc is too old . . . and i really just dont have the time. i do miss it tho

:D I do understand not having the time. My time on this forum has cut into my game time too :001_huh: Hubby is like what is with this?

  4. We went on one in October and had a blast. It took us about 2 days to unwind and start really enjoying the cruise. I say make sure you take a week. That gives you time to disconnect from your "life" and its cares and pressures. Then you still have 5 days to enjoy. There is lots going on at all times of the day on a ship.

Room service only costs a tip too!!! Plus you can try everything on the menu at dinner if you want. I wish I had tried the cold soup each night.

Day 4 Hubby said "life is good. It's 10 am and I am sitting with a beer and cigar on the deck looking at the Ocean. Yep, life is good".

Happy Relaxing wishes for you and Hubby.:001_smile:

  5. My daughter and I are learning English grammar together. I have learned more in the first week and a half than I did in a whole year of school.

The best part is my 15 yr old said "mom, I think I will actually learn grammar this year. I did not know what a verb or adverb was, I just guessed and circled something. This makes total sense!"

I love that she is excited about it.

Also excited to look into The Logic of English. Maybe that can help our spelling.

  6. I have used (melted if it's below 76° in your house, since it's a solid at 75° and below and liquid at 76° and above) expeller-pressed coconut oil in baking w/ great success and no taste change. The virgin CO might affect it, but probably not much. The EPCO is cheaper, so I just use it and save the VCO for things I want the coconut taste to be stronger in.

    :iagree:

  7. We just started homeschooling HS with my dd and I was introduced to Tapestry of Grace. We are two weeks into it and we are really enjoying the history and literature. I love the discussion time that is built in at the end of the week. I think that is my favorite part. I have an appointment to sit with my daughter twice and hear her thoughts and feelings about history and literature. It is opening up talking in other areas as well.

For math I went with Chalk dust because she is in Pre Cal and I never got that far in school. I love that we can email the instructor if she gets stumped. I love apologia sciences. We used one in 7th grade she really loved it so we came back to what worked for us. I love that the emphasis with lab work is to get them used to keeping a lab journal like they will need to keep in college.

I was not planning on HS her for HS and was shocked when she asked to come home a few months ago. I started praying and it seemed God put people in my path to introduce me to curriculum (chalkdust and TOG). Those choices have been very good for us. It is nice to you are thinking about it now and have plenty of time to research. My eyes have been opened to the vast options available through this forum.

Good luck to you and yours

  8. Have you ever had one of those days that ends with a huge headache?

Today I sit here and my head hurts so bad I do not even want to enjoy my reward of reading the forums after completing school.

Shurley English chapter 2 level 8 is a lot to take in. I have read and recited and classified until I am seeing stars. Then I got to do it again with my 6th grader.

In the end its worth it. My 10th grader said "mom, I think I will actually learn this and not just guess. I have never learned what a verb was or a subject. This just makes sense to me now. I think I will get it this year.

    now for some tylenol:tongue_smilie:

  9. We are enjoying working our way through the Rangers Apprentice series. My daughter talked about it so much her older brother read it. They talked about it so much I asked to read them. We three talked about it so much my husband and daughter asked to read it. Dad is reading after dinner and we are on book 6. The three of us that have read them all are still enjoying going through them again with DH and DD.

  10. Hi, I am not sure of your religious bent but my 7th and 8th grader really loved Apologia natural science. We later found out there is lab kit we could have gotten to make labs so much more convenient. This is not online or free. I am thinking I was not helpful at all....sorrry

  11. We've fallen into the summer routine and it is too flexible for me to have amy peace when my home is all messy. I have this nifty *Launch Pad* from Flylady on my (Google) bookmark bar. Every morning we check the pink button labeled Flight Plan. It tells us a quick job for the day that we can do before school. There are other buttons that are also helpful, but for now I'm keeping it quick and simple.

    http://flylady.net/c/lp.php

I love Fly lady....her routine ideas helped us a huge bunch! I also love that she calls it "home blessing hour".

This summer I made all desired extra curricular activities dependent on chores being done. You want to participate in band...keep the bathroom clean....football? vacuum the floors...if any electronics were desired then my kitchen better be spotless. It took a bit of time...the attitudes started but well...we talked about being part of a family.

As a family member you get computer time, Tv, band, football, books, music, phone, itunes, dinner, clean laundry, transportation to friends house, summer camp....those privileges come because we have taken up the responsibility of home and are a part of the family. If you no longer want to benefit from the privileges of family then you do not have to participate in the responsibilities. The choice is yours.

LOL guess what? No one wanted to give up the fun of family so they decided to take up the work of family. Attitude is a choice...my papa used to say "you have the same pants to get glad in as you had to get mad in" They are excused to their room until attitude is better. I also will say "wow, that came our really rude. Were you intending to be rude? How about we rewind and try that again".

I have found stating that something is unacceptable and giving them the chance to correct it works pretty good. They all have bad days...shoot I have bad days too.

I am lazy too....that is why I work hard on a schedule for the kids...it means less work for me. The hard part is staying consistent. The kids adjust better than I do to a new routine as long as it is written out clearly for them what is expected.

Good luck.....I too am keeping on keeping on in this area.:tongue_smilie:

  12. If all the kids will be in bed already and the sitter is here for 3.5 hours, 8pm to 1130pm?

We never hire babysitters, usually just trade off with a friend, so we have no idea.

My daughter had a family tell her they pay $ much an hour but only half that after the kids were in bed. I always went with the motto of asking what a teen charged...if they did not have a set price I would say we pay $__ an hour is that agreeable with you?

It really depends on your kids. Have you trained them to stay in bed after they have been put there? If so they should not be a problem. If you know your kids will be a hassle then you will want to make it worth the sitters time or she will not come back.

Do you have an adult friend that might want a little Christmas money to come sit with your kids? I have done that plenty of times. I have said "hey we need someone to sit at the house with our kids while we are out. It will be about 3 and half hours and I am willing to pay $25. They will already be in bed so feel free to bring a book or watch some tv."

In my opinion it is crazy to pay an inexperienced teen the same amount I would pay a Nannie service or a program that feeds my kids and does activities with them. I take all of that into consideration...did I have to pick them up? Do I have to drop them off at home? Are they experienced? Will the kids be up and will the sitter be feeding them and cleaning the dishes? I have a set price and then offer more for different services....like we pay $6 and hour but we will need you to feed and put them to bed so we will pay $8 and hour. Or you could do like the family my daughter sat for....we pay $10 an hour when awake but $8 an hour when in bed...

    Good luck
