  1. As Cat said they are the same. Be sure you open the case before the deadline. I believe it is 40 days. you may be able to cancel your payment through paypal if they have not claimed your money yet. I have found it very easy to use the Ebay solution center. Open the case and it will be taken care of in a timely manner.

They will asked if you have contacted the seller first to try and resolve your issue. A message sent to most sellers asking for a response before a set date or you are going to open a case will usually get a response. If not go through Ebay, they will take care of it.

  2. I think this is a good plan. Ds2 just went to a friend's bday party and you know what made it special for him? Just having his friends over for pizza and video games. He'd been trying to get them together since the start of summer but they always had to cancel for one reason or another. They finally got together for his bday.

I say get her input. Of course if she says she doesn't know then you're kinda stuck. Maybe suggest a tea party, movie night, bowling, glamour night . . . ?

Many teen girls love to be pampered. You could try pedicures and manicures with special polish. My 15 yr old suggests making their own facials or deodorant. Is she into cosmetics yet? You could have a Mary Kay rep come give the girls makeovers....she could also talk about the appropriate care of skin and how to wear makeup as a teen.....educational and fun. My daughter discovered Pride and Prejudice about this age.....she went to a sleep over where they watched the 3 hour then the 6 hour version...fun for them.

  3. I'd rather buy Playmobile at this point. He doesn't get the few hours of building that he gets with a Lego kit, but he gets a lot more overall play time from it, and it doesn't just float off into the wind after a couple of months of play time.

:iagree: We love playmobil....actually my 16 yr old son still collects the soldiers. I figure he will pass them to his son. Most Americans do not know what they are though.

  4. Last year I made the no sew fleece blankets....it turned into gifts for everyone last Christmas. Once someone saw it they too "had" to have one. It is fun to pick out the patterns and then you could have the kids help you cut and tie them. My kids had it down to a science by the end of our 27 blankets. We could tie a blanket in under 30 minutes. They work for single beds but not sure about larger beds. I found 2 yards of a good quality fleece is a great size and has lasted through many washings.

I found the directions on utube and found you really cannot mess them up. The first few blankets I pinned the material and measured but by the end we were just putting the material on the table and cutting and tying. It was fun. I am sorry I do not know anyone else to make them for. They were just so fun!

  5. I could really do with some good ideas for a girls 13th birthday party. It needs to be inexpensive, traditional (no walk in the woods, outdoorsy, crafty, etc), and special. I don't want much, do I?:) I would appreciate your ideas. Thanks!

hmm..no not asking for much :tongue_smilie:

I just planned a party and was stressing about how to make it special. When I asked my daughter what made a birthday special to her I was surprised by her answer. That helped me fashion a special celebration for her around what she felt was special. I wound up being a sleepover with her best friend with lots of time together. She wanted a special meal, movie and activity. For her cake she asked for my grandmas key lime cake (too easy to make)

Her idea was a lot less expensive money and time wise than what I had been planning and she was THRILLED!

You could ask your daughter what she thinks of when she thinks of a party. Or what makes a birthday special to her?

EDIT: Sorry that was not really any specific idea....I am all out of those

  6. Glad it was an easy fix!

So, what do you make in your Vitamix on a daily basis? I have one too that gets used to make lots of smoothies. Now that it is getting cold again, I'll start making soups for lunch.

You can make soup with it? What kind? This sounds like a good investment to me. I will have to look seriously into this and get back to my DH. :D

  7. I am hoping someone here has a recipe for baked oatmeal. I attended a womens retreat a few years back. They served baked oatmeat with a number of toppings we could add to our slice. It was heavenly. I am so sorry I did not get the recipe.

I believe they used regular oats, cooked them first then baked them but I wonder if they added anything.

    Thanks for you help.

  8. :iagree: With pretty much everything. You can't make him.

And I wanted to highlight this. Many people who we think of as not liking reading actually enjoy nonfiction more. But the other things suggested are good too - graphic novels, audiobooks, magazines, etc.

:iagree:My son would rather do anything than read fiction. He much prefers to read textbook type info and has been this way since he was young. At your sons age he was into reading the textbooks from the army command course. You said he is reading that required reading may be all he cares to handle at this time. Love the OP's idea about reading with him for a bit and putting the book down. We have done this many times with great success. My 10yr old is enjoying Rangers apprentice atm with dad reading to us after dinner.

He may find that interesting if you read the first few chapters with him.

  9. note: x^2 means x squared.

    f(2+h) means that you're putting (2+h) into the function instead of x. So wherever you see an x, change it to (2+h). So f(2+h) = (2+h)^2 - (2+h) + 1. We know that f(2) = 4-2+1 = 3, so our difference quotient is:

    ((2+h)^2 - (2+h) + 1) - 3

    --------------------------

    h

When we go to simplify this, we must be careful to square (2+h) properly. It is a *very* common mistake to try to write '4+h^2' instead ... watch out for this! (2+h)^2 = 2^2 + 2*2*h + h^2 = 4 + 4h + h^2. We also have to be careful to distribute the minus sign through the parentheses. So we get:

    (4 + 4h + h^2 - 2 - h + 1) -3

    ----------------------------

    h

After combining like terms, we get:

    3h + h^2

    ---------

    h

Another REALLY COMMON error to watch out for here is improper cancellation. We can't just start crossing off h's. We have to factor first. After factoring, we get:

    h(3+h)

    ------

    h

And then we can cancel the h's to get 3+h, which hopefully is the answer she was looking for; if not, there may be a typo in the answer book.

Thank you so much. I love this forum! HUGS Kiana for your help!:grouphug:

  10. My DD brought me this problem and says she is stumped and has no idea how they got the answer. Can anyone here help us?

Directions: Find the difference quotient and simplify your answer

    f(x) = x squared -x +1,

    f(2+h0 -f(2), {this line is over h}

    h does not equal 0

 stumped more than my DD

  11. Have you ever looked at Flylady? She has a website that helps with just that sort of thing.

She started out with a CHAOS house - "can't have anyone over syndrom" and worked to get her house in order with one new routine a month. Then she started helping others put the same plan in place. She has a section on her website about getting your house ready for the market.

I love that she is supportive and encouraging. She says start with baby steps just like Susan C recommends. I love that flylady has a plan to follow as you go through the steps. She even has an email reminder that can be helpful.

You can check it out here http://www.flylady.net/

  12. I am not sure of some of the abbreviations you used so I am not sure if I am on the same page or not. What is VSL? Does it have to do with the visual learning modality?

Just a quick note about our story. My DD in 10th grade loves math and hated grammar. I came across Shurley Grammar for my 6th grader and decided to go with the 8th level Shurley for my 10th grader (purchased from a high school teacher that used it for remedial high school English). That is the best thing I have done for her. It also is the best thing for me. I struggled all my life with grammar and in a matter of a few days realized I get it now.

Shurley English uses a question answer flow and it is done orally for the most part at first. You learn a jingle for the parts of speech. The second week my DD was telling her brother "hey, you know all those underline the subject once and the verb twice and the predicate? Well, I can do that now." I have been amazed at how grammar presented this way has clicked with our logical minds. We were doing several sentences the other day and both of us laughed and said...did you ever think we would be saying prepositions are easy? I love the teachers manual because it has the script written out for me to read. Then we work 3 sentences together orally as we write it on the whiteboard. Fun, easy and successful!!!

I cannot recommend this any higher! At 40 something I can say I get it thanks to this curriculum. I am so thankful my DD's do not have to wait this long to get it.

I told my husband I now love grammar and think I will be ready to tutor once we finish this years curriculum...LOL

  13. I don't even have words. Thank you guys SO much. Today, we just hung out at the park all day, and relaxed. The truth is I have known it was to much. I just am so scared of letting him down, and failing him. But, at the same time I don't want him to grow up never having had a childhood. Thank you. So, so much.

    Becky

Remember this is a journey. You have 12 years to teach him all he needs to know. Many topics only need to be introduced for exposure as they will keep learning more and more about the subject...thinking of English that keeps going deeper and deeper. Your new schedule looks like fun for you and your littles! Enjoy the journey!

  14. First year homeschooling and today is one of those days when I'm worrying I can't do it. I've heard it's fairly normal but how many days am I going to feel like this? I'm discouraged by my DS's laziness and attitude. I'm afraid I won't be able to teach him. I'm frustrated by my own lack of focus and "positive persuasion".

Sorry - I just needed to whine a little.

:grouphug: I seem to feel this way every year at different times. I keep reminding myself it is a journey. The goal is to cover ( material) over the coarse of the year. Some days we accomplish a great deal, while other days we just get by. It is helpful to remember someone called the first 6 to 8 weeks a fog as you and the student find your stride. As another poster said "just keep swimming" this too will pass.

I did find having a goal for the week and the day helped my dd. She knew that when she finished x amount of work she was free to pursue her interest and fun.

:grouphug: as another said..yes keep coming here to whine and get encouragement.

  15. We adopted the "Something she wants, something she needs, something to wear, something to read" suggestion a few years ago. I'm pretty sure I heard about it here :)

For your dd I'd probably do something music related as her "want" - maybe a new CD? Something she needs could be a cute bag for dance or something more practical like a travel kit (I don't know why, but my kids love having their own travel kits with toothpaste, shampoo, etc.). Something to wear could be for dance or a cozy new pair of pj's. Then I'd purchase a nice, hardcover book that she'd enjoy.

This has worked great for our 3 kiddos. It has helped to keep me in check too...when they were little is was so hard to stop buying for them. We have saved "big" ticket items for the teen years. My 16 year old is really looking forward to a phone and computer sometime before he moves out

  16. I'm teaching 10th graders and using TOG, and our days are lasting between 5 and 6 hours. Does that seem like too much? I'm not getting any complaints or anything, but it does seem like a long haul :tongue_smilie: Just wanted to compare....not that I should be comparing :D

I just started using TOG with my 10th grader this year and we are finding it takes us 6-7 hours each day to complete work using TOG for history and Lit. The reading required is substantial. I would say you are on track for the grade she is at and the curriculum you are using. Especially when you add in Math. DD has Pre Cal this year and is finding it takes 1-2 hours for the math alone.

  17. Tonight I pause with our online gaming community of Tenacious (about 60 members kneeling in Lions Arch in GuildWars 2) to remember and honor "Hawk". We did not know him in RL but he touched our life through a MMORPG game. We played with him in game and prayed for him in a chat room full of people asking God to heal him this side of heaven. Cancer was his end on earth but we look forward to meeting him in Heaven where we will share eternity together. Hawk you are missed! :angelsad2:
