  1. I would place money that it's not eczema, it's a fungal infection or staph. Do you have a dermatologist? My kids had the same thing happen and they needed (I think, it was a few years ago) abx and a different steroid cream than what they use for eczema.

  2. On the note of the pebbles...............my niece at age 7ish inserted a crayon into herself & had to have it removed by a doctor.  It was not sexual in nature & she hadn't been abused or witnessed anything.  She was just curious about her body.  According to her physician, it happens a LOT more than you think (even the nurse admitted that her DD had done something similar).  It just isn't talked about because of the assumptions that people make.

One of my daughters did the same thing with crayons, in multiple places (thank goodness I had good tweezers and a steady hand). Multiple objects. I am 100% sure she had not been abused or witnessed anything inappropriate; she was one year old and had never been away from me. Some kids just do things you don't think of.

ETA: I have no opinion on the issue, but I do love the show Girls and have listened to many of Lena Dunham's interviews, including the one on Howard Stern. It felt to me like if it were going to be A Thing, it would have come out on that interview, but it didn't. I'm more interested in reading the book now.

  3. Some GF flour blends work for roux, but I'd probably purée some of the corn for a natural thickener. Cornstarch needs to be dissolved in cold water before being added to hot liquid. It would not work as flour does in making a roux.

YES. I keep telling my husband to whisk up a slurry with cornstarch before trying to thicken.

  4. I totally think it could be veganized.  I kind of winged it…. so I first sautéed some chopped onion, celery, and carrot in an olive oil/butter mixture.  I then added in the green chills, and salt and pepper, and made a roux with some flour (maybe 1/4 cup?)  While that was going on, I had the potatoes boiling in some chicken stock to cook, but you could use veggie stock.  Once the potatoes were cooked, I added in the frozen TJ corn for a few minutes.  Then I added the hot stock/potato/corn mixture to the roux slowly.  In the end, I finished with a bit of organic half and half that I had in the fridge, but you could omit, or use coconut milk or something else. :)

I think thyme may be good…or parsley….or chives…but I was going off what I had.

It also has to be GF--I'm thinking I could make a roux with cornstarch? I'm totally going to do this, but with a red chili, slit and cooked in it, then removed at the end. Thanks for posting!

  5. It's 80 here during the days, but it was in the 60s when I woke up, so I just finished making soup.  I made a corn/potato chowder using Trader Joe's frozen fire roasted corn, those really tiny potatoes, and a can of green chills for a bit of kick.  (Not enough kick actually.)  Smells great. :)

I *literally* sat down at my computer just now to look up a soup recipe using TJ's fire-roasted corn and got distracted by the forums! I also have some of the tiny potatoes. What else did you use? Could it be veganized? It's still in the 90s here, but my family loves soup all year.

  6. Deb, could your little chargy cable thing be the problem? Do you have any friends w a One?

I haven't has that problem and use a Mac.

I think the chargy cable is the problem but the company keeps sending me stock replies that won't work. It worked in my husband's laptop so I guess I will just use that.

  7. I am so frustrated--has anyone else had this problem? My fitbit One started crashing my computer (Mac) every time I plugged it in. I have been in email contact with the company but they keep suggesting I charge it on my computer (??) instead of a brick, then suggest cleaning the metal bits that charge and plug it into my computer, not a brick (??), etc. They are just not understanding what I'm saying and it is driving me up the wall!

  8. To the first, THANK YOU.

To the second, I am from Ebola ground zero.  I remember a lot of things like cricket infestations in which the entire parking lot of my dorm at UNT was covered with crickets like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie, but I swear I do not recall flying roaches.  Maybe I am just lucky that way.  :D

texasmama, I wonder if we know each other, I am also at ground zero, especially since it was just reported that there is at least one case in Frisco, now. And one of my daughters attends UNT. :) But I have never seen a flying roach...are those even real??

  9. Yes, that was something all my kids learned at age 3. How to shake hands, introduce yourself, and some version of, "Nice to meet you." I remember when MIL had a friend over and my daughters were maybe four years old; they jumped up from the couch, marched over to MIL's friend, and introduced themselves with handshakes. Both women gaped and then I could see MIL was kind of preening about the good manners. :)

  10.

I also don't get the whole time travel thing having a point. I can only presume it will actually have some value to the plot in future books bc it seemed pointless in this first one.

If you haven't read the series you really will not get it. Diana Gabaldon is working right now on the 9th book; the 8th one was just released this year. My husband and I were so fortunate to meet her at her appearance in Dallas. You truly cannot begin to understand the arc until you read all of the books.
