I have two year-round swimmers with asthma. They were both under the care of a pulmonologist until we moved this year. The children's hospital where we live now has their asthma care under the allergy umbrella. Both situations provided good care.

Ok I will take a stab... this is what we do at the Island level...
We started with Grammar Island 4 days per week. It is like reading a chapter book, sort of. So I kind of looked at how much I thought I could cover in a week. I decided 1 week on each of the 4 parts because my kids had already had a good deal of grammar elsewhere. I then divided the page amounts for each part by 4 to get an idea of how much to read a day. I used this as a GUIDE only. Most days they wanted to read more because it is so much fun. There are some activities at the back of the TM that I used when we had covered that particular material. So we finished GI in about a month. Please recognize that my kids did not have mastery after a month. They merely had enough intro/review to continue with the other programs in Island. Concurrent with GI, we also started MOH. There is no real reason to schedule this. Just read until they look bored and pick up the next time. At the end of each chapter, there is a poetry writing exercise. Do that when you get to it. We also started BL at the same time as GI and MOH. We do one stem a week over two days. We just read it together and discuss. (We love the stem stories - sometimes we write on of our own on day 1) On the second day, we write a stem poem of our own and the simile.
After GI was complete, we began PI and SI. For PI, we do one sentence per day, 4 days per week. They try it first by themselves and then we go over it together. I even let them come up with their own "comment" which they love!
For SI, we read 4 days per week. We cover one chapter per week (so far). Again, I just broke the reading of the chapter over 4 days and used that as a guide each day. We begin each day with review and then start reading. There are writing activities at the back of the TM. We do one each of the 4 days.
Our schedule looks like this:
M - SI, PI, BL
T - SI, PI, MOH
W - SI, PI, BL
TH - SI, PI, MOH
We spend about 45 minutes-1 hour on MCT each day.

Please help - I know I am coming into the middle of a conversation, but I need some help. I know that at least some of you who are posting on this thread about literary analysis and other threads about writing are MCT users as am I (a real newbie, though). If I am following this thread and others (about Bravewriter, etc), it seems that several are looking to supplement MCT heavily. Can you help me sort through the need for this so I make sure I am not missing something for my own kids? I thought MCT was coming aout with a literary analysis something-or-other soon... Also, I thought the writing portion of MCT was especially solid... so why all the extra classes, etc. Am I missing something? Thanks so much!

We are using WWE3 this year and will finish up in the next few weeks. We finished FFL4 several months ago and transitioned to MCT (all parts, including Sentence Island). Obviously, we have been using WWE3 and SI at the same time which has been fine as they focus on different skills. For next year, though, I am trying to decide whether to continue with WWE4 in addition to MCT. It makes the schedule quite full, but I am wondering if we should carry WWE through to completion of the program. Any thoughts???

I have been on the doctor prescribed megadose (50,000IU per week) for 8 weeks and just retested at a level of 45. The doctor now said to go to a maintenance dose of 2000IU per day. Based on what I have read here, I would like for my level to be higher, but won't have the opportunity to retest b/c of insurance. If you were me, would you increase the dose above 2000 and for how long?

We do the test book with Singapore math and the built-in tests/quizzes in the Apples and Pears Spelling and Latin for Children workbooks. My kids came out of a brick and mortar classical school last year where my son averaged 6-7 tests per week. I am test phobic at this point!

I do it all the time! You can add a cup or two of water or juice if you want.... Just set it to low and let it go...

I break off the woody stems. All that means is that I snap off the ends wherever they naturally break. I spread them in a single layer on a shallow pan. Then I drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt and fresh ground pepper. Pop them in the oven on whatever temp I am already cooking on (around 400 degrees but it doesn't really matter) for about 5-10 minutes until they are tender. Yum!

I use DITHOR with DS10 and DD8. I have not found it to dampen their love of reading, but we take a casual approach. I don't push too hard.
DITHOR introduces story elements and character traits. I see it as reading enrichment. It simply adds another layer to our reading time.
Just last week we were reading William of Orange for our biography. DITHOR had us compare William to David and his fight with Goliath. When I told my son that we were going to do that, he got very excited because of the parallels he could make. So, again, not a dampening, but rather an enriching!

A daughter of a co-worker of dh is offering eggs for sale from chickens she raised herself. They are fed the following (according to the co-worker):
They get the all natural Layena brand feed for Purina (they have ingredient info on the web) we also feed them cracked corn as a scratch feed – the rest they peck out of the yard – grass, plants, bugs, worms.. and some items from the garden (blemished tomatoes, damaged squash, pumpkin, melons etc.
Do any of you local food experts see any problems with the way these chickens are fed? Are there any other questions I should ask before purchasing the eggs?

I would like to have DD8 and DD10 read some books over the summer that would correspond to SOTW 3, which is on tap for next fall. Can you think of some that would be particularly well-suited to summer reading?
